Prevention
Author: C. C. Stallings, F. C. Gwazdauskas, and G. M. Jones, Extension Specialists, Dairy Science; Virginia Tech Publication Number 445-001, July 2002
Threats to farm security can come from many sources. Intentional destruction or contamination of livestock is a possibility that producers must guard against. Safe substances may be used to produce unsafe or harmful combinations if used incorrectly or indiscriminately. These include chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, and animal drugs. Farm management should secure and account for such products and report anyone acting suspiciously or wishing to obtain abnormal quantities of any substances. According to the American Feed Industry Association's Guide to Biosecurity Awareness, animals and feed ingredients may become adulterated by the following means:
  • Biological (bacteria, toxins, viruses, parasites, etc.)
  • Chemical (classical chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals, such as pesticides, rodenticides, and heavy metals)
  • Radiological (agents that can be delivered in liquid or solid form)
  • Physical (metals, glass, and plastic)

    Help for hiring is covered here. Jeffrey F. Keown, Extension Dairy Specialist Previous Category Catalog Order Info
    As Nebraska dairy farms increase in size and/or the managers advance in age, we see more producers turning to hired labor as a way to maintain a viable farm unit. Hiring a traditional farm worker is easier than hiring an individual without farm experience because the farm worker in some way has experience with the hours required, as well as knowledge of the unexpected problems certain to arise on any farmstead. As the number of workers available with farm backgrounds continues to decrease, many producers are looking at non-farm background workers to meet their needs. Non-traditional farm employees are not as aware of farm-related problems and are more familiar with the conventional eight hour/five day work week. Therefore, the dairy producer must adequately explain the expected job responsibilities and wage scale before the applicant is hired. This up-front frankness helps eliminate potential problems with new employees. The entire process of hiring a new employee should start with a clear, concise and inclusive position description. This position description should contain, among other topics:

    Project Summary Statistics on work place injuries and fatalities continue to indicate that agriculture is one of the most hazardous industries in our nation. Employees are valuable resources for a farm and since an injury never occurs at a "convenient" time, it will impact production and profit in the form of: lost work time; medical expenses; increase in workers' compensation premiums; and, sometimes the morale of other employees. This means that everyone involved in agriculture needs to do a better job of addressing safety and health issues in the work place.
    Developing a loss control or risk management plan for the farm is a pro-active measure that focuses on improving work site safety and employee work practices with the ultimate goal of reducing work place injuries. An effective safety program includes: · strong commitment and hands-on involvement by management;
    • open communication between management and employees;

    http://www.mwpshq.org/ncr11.html
    The Farm Corporation, NCR-11 The Farm Corporation , NCR-11, by Neil Harl of Iowa State University and Roger McEowen of Kansas State University, is a basic review of all issues related to organizing a farm business as a corporation. The publication discusses the nature of a corporation and considers some of the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating a family farm. It also discusses the taxation of corporations and tax-option corporations, describes the process of incorporation, and explains how farm corporations operate. Particularly useful elements in the publication include one table that compares farm business organizations and another that presents the statutory provisions applicable to farm corporations in the 13 states of the North Central Region of the U. S. Harl, who is the Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Agriculture at Iowa State University, and McEowan say the need for current information about farm corporations and the existence of some special income tax provisions for small corporations prompt a new look at the farm corporation and make the release of NCR-11 very timely. The authors say those interested in farm corporations can get a good understanding of the topic from NCR-11, but, they note, the advice and service of an attorney are indispensable in organizing and operating a farm corporation. NCR-11 is a revised version of an earlier publication, and contains tax and legal information current as of September 2002. With it's emphasis on practical advice and the decision-making process, this publication should prove useful to farmers, educators, lenders, consultants, and others involved in farm business management. This publication was developed under the auspices of the North Central Farm Management Extension Committee (NCFMEC), which is a collaborative effort of farm management specialists from major land-grant universities and Extension Services.

    Why should I establish a Trust Account? By setting up a Trust Account now, you can assure your money will be invested wisely and will be handled in the way that you intended. A Trust can relieve your survivors of tax burdens and can ensure their financial security for the future. With current tax laws, estates can be taxed at a 55% rate. Establishing a trust account for your assets can alleviate this burden from your survivors, as well as avoiding months of legal proceedings, and protecting your family's privacy. The Trust Department will protect your wishes and the intentions of your estate. Trusts can be set up in a number of ways, from a Charitable Trust to a Custodial IRA. The Trust Department can be named Executor/Administrator of your will, and can handle all of the affairs that arise. A Trust can provide for a surviving spouse and/or children for their lifetime as you direct. The financial decisions may be left up to the discretion of the bank, or the survivors, depending on your wishes. A Trust Account is not limited to cash assets, stocks and bonds. Your trust account may include farms, real estate, and even businesses. You can be confident that your hard earned assets will be secure for your survivors.
