The history of our farm: The farm is located in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Western Oregon in USDA zone 8. We typically enjoy 160+ days of frost free growing season with long days and some rainfall. Our winters are generally mild, rarely dipping into the teens. Since emigrating to America in the 1600s, the thirteen generations of my paternal lineage have been farmers, either exclusively, or in conjunction with a trade or profession. Gardening is a family tradition. Our ancestors moved here from Maine, via Kansas in the late 1800s. Great-grandfather, Victor Hugo Dunton, built the house and farm at which we live. Our children are the fifth generation of Duntons to be raised on this land and the sixth in our community. This soil has sustained our family through times of world war, global economic collapses, societal unrest, and natural disasters. We believe that with proper stewardship, the farm will continue to provide sustenance for many generations to come.

Washington, DC - According to news reports from various sources, the Farm Bill Conference Committee is expected to release the final results of their farm bill deliberations later today. Early statements indicate that farm bill negotiators have rejected key provisions supported by family farmers and farm groups from all across the nation, including a ban on packer ownership of livestock and restrictions on large payments being made to factory farms and meatpackers. "This is a travesty, a boondoggle, and an outrage," said Minnesota farmer and Land Stewardship Project member Monica Kahout. "Family farmers have consistently called for a ban on packer ownership of livestock, but congress is responding to corporate lobbyists rather htan the people with this bill. This is a farm bill that directly supports corporate livestock factories, pure and simple."

Below are 11 discussion points which can be used to explain why large-scale swine production facilities are very different from traditional family farms, and therefore necessitate a much higher level of rules and regulations. These points can be used to help focus discussion and dialogue at meetings, and they also make excellent hand-outs. The full citations for the articles and studies footnoted in the discussion points can be found in the ICRP Bibliography
1. Economic Development
Does corporate farming provide rural economic development? 1) Big producers displace more jobs than they create!
A University of Missouri study (a) found that independent producers create three times as many jobs as corporate contract production. For each 12,000 slaughter hogs produced under corporate contract, the study estimated that 9.44 jobs would be created (4.25 on the farm and 5.19 in the community) but that 27.97 would be displaced (12.6 on the farm and 15.37 off the farm).
2) Big corporate livestock operations are less likely to do business locally than are small and medium sized family farmers!

Corporate Hogs at the Public Trough Murphy Family Farms, Illinois Residents in Knox County, Illinois, were concerned when Murphy Family Farms - the nation's 2nd largest hog producer - came to town. This company's environmental record in other states is horrendous, and the state of Illinois has weak standards for CAFOs. Yet local officials ignored these concerns. Instead, they offered the company tax exemptions and used taxpayer dollars for road improvements. Locals are now suffering from air and water pollution, and property values on adjacent lands are being reduced because of their polluting neighbor. On December 2, 1996, James Baird was reelected as Chairman of the Knox County Board. What the residents didn't know is that by voting in Baird, they also voted in a major factory farm.Baird had pledged before the election not to work for hog giant Murphy Family Farms, because of public outcry against this huge factory farm. (1) But after his victory he informed the county that he and his son, Doug Baird, were to be co-owners of The Highlands, a corporate hog farm under sole contract with Murphy.

Eggribusiness - EGGS HIDDEN RISKS Did you know that excessive cholesterol is only one among many hazards posed by egg consumption? To keep millions of hens alive in the polluted egg factory environment, the industry relies upon antibiotics, pesticides, and other hazardous chemicals. The toxic dangers these hidden ingredients pose to consumers make the health hazards associated with cholesterol seem minor by comparison. You've seen the egg industry' slick advertisements for "farm fresh" eggs. But most eggs don't come from real farms. Today's eggs come from huge indoor factories where literally millions of hens are kept in most inhumane, disease-ridden conditions imaginable. Can eggs from drugged and diseased hens possibly be good for consumers as the advertisements claim? Certainly not. Leading public health professionals across the country warn that the wholesale misuse of antibiotics is creating hazardous strains of bacteria, such as salmonella. Many of these antibiotic resistant "super bugs" can be lethal to human beings. Insecticides are not only sprayed around the hens' cages, but are actually mixed in the feed given to the hens. "Feed through" insecticides, many of which are illegal, make the excrement that piles up in and around the cages toxic to flies and other insects. As debate rages as to what constitutes an "acceptable" level of toxins in eggs - hens, human beings, and the environment continue to be poisoned.
