Falkland Islands Rifle Association
A Brief History
Organised rifle shooting has taken place in the Falkland Islands for over 100 years. The club was in operation as early as the 1885/86 season. Our records extend from the 1892 season. In 1894 the club was almagmated with the Falkland Islands Defence Force, and became the Falkland Islands Defence Force Rifle Club. This arrangement continued until the year 2000 when for technical and legal reasons the club once again separated from the Defence Force and became the "Falkland Islands Rifle Association"; although the club and the defence force continue to share range facilities. We hold fairly complete records of the club's history, but during the Falklands war in 1982 the records for the period 1955 to 1973 were lost. However after a public appeal in 1991 many people were able to supply information to fill in the gaps, although the three year period 1955 to 57 is still missing. If anybody reading this can help with these records we would be grateful. After the 1982 war no shooting was possible until a new range was built, at Rookery Bay, in 1990. The new range was opened by His Exellency W.H. Fullerton on 28th October 1990, and christened by Mr A.H. Ford, the eldest active member of the club.

History of the Falkland Islands
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Background: The Falkland Islands were first seen by Davis in , and Sir Richard Hawkins sailed along their north shore in . In Sebald de Weert , a Dutchman, visted them and called them the Sebald Islands, a name which they bore on some Dutch maps into the 19th century. Captain John Strong sailed between the two principal islands in , and called the passage Falkland Sound, and from this the island group afterwards took its English name. In the islands were taken possession of by the French, who established a colony at Port Louis on Berkely Sound; they were however expelled by the Spaniards in

Falklands War
(Redirected from Falkland Islands War The Falklands War (in Spanish : Guerra de las Malvinas) was a conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands between March and June . Though surprised by an Argentinian attack on the islands, Britain eventually prevailed and the islands remained in British hands, in accordance with the wishes of the inhabitants. In Argentina, the conclusion of the war led to the downfall of the military junta and the restoration of a system of democracy
Background
Ownership of the islands had long been disputed. In the 16th Century , the French were first to establish a claim by right of occupation, only to be expelled by

Falkland Islands Factfile The Falkland Islands
    History
The Falkland Islands are currently a dependency of Britain, but since their first discovery in 1592, the rule of the Islands has changed numerous times. Englishman John Davis discovered The Falkland Islands, but nobody went ashore until Captain John Strong, nearly 100 years later. However, it was the French who took ownership of the Islands, when they developed a settlement there in 1764. Britain attempted to claim the Islands from the French, but was unsuccessful.
The Islands were then sold to the Spanish, but again Britain attempted to claim them unsuccessfully. In 1806, the Spanish left and there was no official rule again until 1820, when the Islands were formally claimed by Argentina. The French then regained control for a short period, until, in 1833, Britain took management of the Falklands. A British Governor was appointed and the Islands have been a dependency of Britain ever since, but this has not been plain sailing. Argentina still wanted the Islands and although by the 1970s a relative friendship existed between the two countries, this gradually deteriorated. In 1977 the future of the Islands was discussed, followed in 1980 by a Foreign Office visit to see the Falkland people. Unfortunately by 1981, no mutual agreement could be reached. This led to the Falklands war of 1982.
The war ended on 14th June 1982 and the Falkland Islands were successfully returned to British control. During the war, 258 Britons died, 3 Falkland Islanders and over 1,000 Argentinians. It was not until 1990 that the two countries re-estalished diplomatic relations. British troops are still based in The Falkland Islands, around 2,000 personnel at the Mount Pleasant air base. The responsibility locally for defence and security of the Islands now lies with the Commander of the British Forces Falklands Islands.

History Although there's some evidence that Patagonian Indians reached the Falklands in rudimentary canoes, the islands were uninhabited when Europeans began to frequent the South Atlantic in the 17th century. A British expedition made the first documented landing in 1690, whereupon they claimed the islands for the crown and named the sound between the two main islands after a British naval officer, Viscount Falkland. The name was later applied to the whole island group. No European power established a settlement on the islands until France landed a garrison at Port Louis on East Falkland in 1764. (A small community of fishermen from St Malo lent the islands their French name, Žles Malouines, from which the Spanish Islas Malvinas derives.) When Spain caught wind of the settlers' presence, they pressured the French government to remove the garrison by citing the papal Treaty of Tordesillas, which had divided the New World between Spain and Portugal. The French complied, and in 1767 the Spanish went on to oust a British settlement at West Falkland's Port Egmont too. (Under threat of war, Spain restored the settlement the following year; the British gave it up of their own accord in 1774, though they held tight to their territorial claims.) The Spanish erected a penal colony at Port Louis, only to abandon it in the early 18th century as the town's ranks swelled with maverick whalers and sealers.
