Web Site Review
http://www.boondocksnet.com/ai/index.html Public reaction and organized resistance to U.S. foreign policy is a rich subset of diplomatic history that is often overlooked in textbooks and teaching. Jim Zwick's extensive Web site, offers a model for exploring this topic. It introduces the first organizations that opposed U.S. territorial and economic imperialism and makes their political analysis, literature, and cultural contribution to U.S. political culture available to a wide audience.

Introduction: What would it be like not having the Extension Service to call on when you had a question? What if agricultural classes were not taught in the local high school? The early settlers in America did not have these resources. Yet, a knowledge of agriculture was critical to their survival. So who did they rely on for agricultural knowledge? Was this knowledge accurate? What was done to promote the study of agriculture? Did formal education have any role in agricultural education? Which colony had a plan for agricultural education/extension? In this lesson we will learn more about the forerunners of agricultural and extension education prior to 1862.
    Lesson Objectives:
At the completion of the lesson you should be able to:
Describe the level of agricultural knowledge possessed by colonists at Jamestown and Plymouth
Identify sources of agricultural knowledged utilized by settlers in Jamestown and Plymouth
Discuss the process of formal schooling in the Massashusetts Bay Colony
Explain the three components of the agricultural education/extension plans used in the Georgia Colony.

THE POPULAR CULTURE ASSOCIATION AND AMERICAN CULTURE ASSOCIATION I. HISTORY OF THE POPULAR CULTURE MOVEMENT
The Popular Culture Association was founded as a spin-off of the American Studies movement in the late 1960s. Many members of the ASA felt that the organization had lost its holistic approach to cultural studies. Tiresome and repetitive studies of Melville, Hawthorne, and Whitman were followed by further tiresome and repetitive studies of Whitman, Hawthorne, and Melville. There was little room for material culture, popular music, movies, and comics. (These flaws have been mitigated over time by ASA.) And so the Popular Culture Association was created. Its journal, The Journal of Popular Culture has been focusing on the popular arts and architecture ever since. The focus is NOT simply American and NOT simply contemporary. Popular culture is world-wide and has been a constant for humanity since the days of Alley Oop. Making Culture Visable By Julie K. Brown “Why for a decade have the most advanced libraries been laying stock of photographs?” Charles Ammi Cutter, president of the Massachusetts Library Association, asked in 1900. “Why are we all now tumbling over one another out of eagerness to get photographs or some near approach to them?” Photography became popular with libraries late in the nineteenth century as recognition grew that the photograph was a form of information, as well as a tool for distributing visual culture. One of the institutional leaders was the Boston Public Library, which had opened a new building in Copley Square. Photographic reproductions of paintings, archi-tecture, and sculpture filled the space, enabling the people of Boston to study European cultural treasures without going any farther than downtown. The core of the collection consisted of eleven hundred photographs given in memory of Harriet H. Graupner. One photograph was a stunning representation of the Sistine Chapel produced by the nineteenth-century photomanufacturer, Adolph Braun of Dornach, Switzerland. The head of the Boston library, Herbert Putnam, wanted to obtain another thirteen thousand photographs to put Boston on equal footing with Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute. On an 1897 trip, he added 6,765 photographs, which were quickly replacing the more expensive engravings that had served as a guide to Europe’s art.
