    Beware the table monsters
    Dining etiquette for children
By Lewena Bayer and Karen Mallett
In Good Company that may help scare away the table monsters: 1. Lead by example. Young children aim to please and most are quite happy to mimic everything they see. If adults are in the habit of using their manners at the table, children as young as a year old will watch and learn. 2. Make mealtime fun! If children forget their manners, make a joke or turn the tables and act like the table monster you just saw. Children will laugh and may repeat the "inappropriate" behavior once or twice but if the joke is accompanied by an explanation they will soon come to understand why and which behaviours are most appropriate. 3. Reward children for good behaviour. If the children behave well at dinnertime for a whole week, take them out to a restaurant and let them "act like adults" or let them order for themselves. Try to choose a reward that means something to your child. 6. Speak their language. There are many good books and songs or videos that teach children manners and if you can incorporate these "childlike" games and activities into daily routine, children will learn much quicker. For example, when you set the table, try using a verse like, "Mr. Fork left (because the fork goes on the left) his knife and spoon right beside the plate" (because the knife and spoon go on the right side.)

Miss Manners Rescues Civilization From Sexual Harassment, Frivolous Lawsuits, Dissing and Other Lapses in Civility By Judith Martin (Crown Publishers; 497 pages; $30) In the guise of a lorgnette-waving, muff-carrying, white-gloved creature named Miss Manners, Judith Martin, a reporter for the Washington Post , launched an etiquette column in 1978. Twice a week in the Style section she archly instructed up-and-coming baby boomers on appropriate personal, social, and professional decorum. Martin's idea was to reinstitute the raised eyebrow as an instrument of social commentary and guidancean idea that itself was supposed to raise eyebrows, and did. At Washington dinner parties in the late 1970s, the implausible new arbiter was a prime topic of conversation among yuppies, who then sent their hosts thank-you notes in blue or black ink, as she prescribed. It was a hoot, and it was polite, too. Miss Manners was wittily practical with the "Gentle Readers" who wrote in for advice on cleaning up their acts. Ministering to their sense of irony and their sense of insecurity at the same time, she was the perfect campy connoisseur of propriety for a tie-dyed generation now into ties. Her basic principlethe importance of "shifting our attention from our own feelings to other people's thoughts"sounded amusingly outlandish in the wake of the let-it-all-hang-out era. Miss Manners'

    Teaching children manners
Are you tired of the epidemic of rude children Here are some tips to teach your children good manners from early on. The most important way to teach your child good manners is to have good manners yourself. Remember: kids model their parents behavior. bodyOffer(15050) Reward good behavior and good manners and let your children know that it is appreciated. If your child doesn't say please and thank you, remind them, but don't make a big issue out it. If you keep nagging them, they will just rebel and it will be a control issue. Point out children with good behavior and good manners. Show them children with poor behavior and point out that adults and children don't like to be around those kids. Start a reward chart/sticker chart and show them how listening and good manners will reap them more than bad behavior. Some communities have children's etiquette classes consider enrolling your child. If you are going to a restaurant or theater where good manners are required, tell your children what you expect of them before you go. Explain to them that they get privileges and special outings because they know how to behave.

It's like training a child to have grizzly bear world, not only do bears have manners, but their Review Seus' five unusual rules of bear etiquette and training
    http://animal.discovery.com/convergence/grizzly/etiquette/etiquette.html
Bear Manners Matter As professional animal trainers for 25 years, Doug and Lynne Seus have dedicated their lives to raising and training animals, including the largest land animal in North America, the grizzly bear. The Seuses adopted their first grizzly more than 20 years ago. Bart the Bear would go on to become the big screen's most famous bear, starring in 15 motion pictures including Legends of the Fall White Fang and The Bear Dr. Dolittle 2 , and two bear cubs, Little Bart (Bart's namesake) and Honey-Bump. So how does Doug Seus get an animal the size of a grizzly bear to do anything he asks? By teaching it manners, of course. "It's like training a child to have manners. They [the bears] won't have dignity unless the parent teaches them and gives them that sense of dignity and self-worth," Seus says. So Seus takes pride in playing mama bear to his adopted bear family and what mama doesn't want their kids to have good manners? In Doug Seus' grizzly bear world, not only do bears have manners, but their tricks are simply fun games and training is transformed into an art form. Rule #1: Blow Into a Bear's Nose
This rule could also be called "Gaining a Grizzly's Trust." Why on earth would you blow into a bear's nose? "It's like throwing your energy into its soul and manifesting yourself in its spirit," Seus says. Or more simply, it gives the bear a warm and fuzzy feeling that lets it know everything is OK. Seus also recommends spending long hours with the bear, sitting with it while it eats meat, stroking it gently.

Answered by Imam Ashraf Ali al-Tahanawi Question: Guidance on Bringing up Children Guidance on Bringing up Children by Imam Ashraf Ali al-Tahanawi It should be borne in mind that the bringing up of children in the proper manner is of prime importance. This is because whatever good or bad habits they learn in their childhood, they do not leave them for the rest of their lives. From the time of infancy till they reach maturity, the following matters should be strictly adhered to: 1. Ensure that the child drinks the milk of a pious, religious woman. Milk has a great effect in the life of a person. 2. It is the habit of women to frighten their children by mentioning the police or other frightening persons or objects. This is an evil habit. Children become weak-hearted because of this. 3. Set aside specific times for making him drink his milk or feeding him so that he may remain healthy. 4. Keep him clean, neat and tidy because one remains healthy in this way. 5. Do not beautify and adorn the child excessively.
