There were fewer events, and only free men who spoke Greek could compete, instead of athletes from any country. Also, the games were always held at Olympia instead of moving around to different sites every time.

Williams powers on to more success
Venus Williams has added yet another major title to her roll of honour this year by winning Olympic gold in Sydney. The current Wimbledon and US Open champion produced another powerful display to see off the brave challenge of Russian Elena Dementieva 6-2 6-4. Her victory saw the United States continue its fine record in the event, following Jennifer Capriati's win in 1992 and Lindsay Davenport's triumph four years ago in Atlanta. It also extends her winning streak to an incredible 32 matches. "I worked really hard for this one," a delighted Williams said after receiving her medal. "I've played five weeks of hard tennis and I've been getting tired - finally I'll admit it."
This is one moment in time for me, my country and my family and my team
Venus Williams "With the grand slams there are so many opportunities to win. A gold medal its just once every four years and who knows what might happen between now and 2004.

Equestrian Sports
Equestrian sports have more than 27 million active participants in the United States alone. NBC Television’s pre-Olympic research between 1992 and 1996 showed equestrian sports as the fourth most popular sport among women. The market for equestrian sports is growing each year as spectators flock to horse shows and individuals take up the sport of riding. Dressage, eventing and show jumping overcome traditional boundaries of sporting criteria through the combination of human and animal to conquer difficult obstacles. Remarkably these equestrian events are the only Olympic sports where men and women equally compete against one another. There are two major equestrian organizations in the United States, which set the standard for equestrian sports. USA Equestrian, Inc. (formerly American Horse Shows Association) is the national governing body of equestrian sport in the United States. The United States Equestrian Team, Inc. (USET) is a non-profit organization, which represents the United States in international equestrian competitions. While these two organizations affect the United States, the FEI is the international sports federation and the sanctioning body of eventing.

Monday, 18 September, 2000, 09:34 GMT 10:34 UK Krayzelburg sets Olympic record
Lenny Krayzelburg just failed to break his own world record
America's Lenny Krayzelburg took the Olympic title and record to add to his world crown with victory in the men's 100m backstroke. Krayzelburg won in 53.72 to slice 0.14 off the time set by fellow countryman Jeff Rouse in 1992. It was the 17th Olympic record to be set in the pool in just three days of competition. But Krayzelburg made hard work of his win, nearly allowing Australia's Matt Welsh in during the final 20 metres. The Ukrainian-born American seized the lead on the first length, turning just 0.02 seconds outside world record schedule but he looked certain to break his own mark - 53.60 - midway through the final length. Concentration But a lapse in concentration cost him the record bid and nearly gold. Welsh took the silver in 54.07 and world championship bronze medallist Stev Theloke of Germany collected an Olympic bronze in 54.82. In the men's 200m butterfly, Stephen Parry kept British hopes alive with a third place finish in his semi-final heat for a place in the final.
