And
The English Civil War Part V
The English Civil War was being fought because, in the words of one of the Parliamentary supporters: The battle lines were solidly drawn. The antagonists faced each other with grim determination and, we have every reason to believe, complete faith in their separate causes and that God was truly on their side. Any military commander could wish for nothing more of his troops. The certainty that some God was looking after one must surely have accounted for more slaughters in the history of mankind than any other cause. Things went badly for the Roundheads for the next year. They lost a few small battles and the Royalists began to think that maybe they would win the war. But it was far from over. The Roundheads signed an agreement with the Scots, the Solemn League and Covenant, by which the Scots promised an army to help the Roundheads in return for a monthly fee and the promise that Presbyterianism would be established in England and Ireland. This would, of course, destroy episcopacy. Instead of Church government by Bishops (episcopacy) there would be church government by presbyteries (councils). King Charles countered this move of the parliamentary forces by making peace with the Irish rebels and convincing some of them to fight on his behalf. The carrot to induce this was that both England and Ireland would again become Catholic! This made more enemies for the King. The remaining loyal Protestants in England turned against him. The new alliances quickly proved their worth; the Irish were defeated and the Scots marched into England! King Charles had, once again, demonstrated his uncanny ability for making stupid mistakes. The war had now spread to involve four major players complete with their attendant religious baggage!

And
The English Civil War Part VII
The demands of the army and the on the Parliament were overwhelming. A real revolution was possible at that moment. It almost seems as though the modern political world was taking shape in London on that day, 30 October 1647, when the army issued, An Agreement of the People. That document stated the fundamentals of democracy as we practice them in our own day. On 15 December 1647 the Commanders faced their assembled troops. The mutinous regiments had taken copies of the Agreement and stuck them in their hats along with the motto: 'England's Freedom! Soldiers' Rights!' , as badges of honor and rebellion. This was too much for Oliver Cromwell! I remember reading the book, , that was later made into a movie with Meryl Streep in the title role. Sophie was a Jewish woman in the Second World War sent to a concentration camp with her two children. Just as she arrives and steps off the freight train at the camp entrance she is herded before a German Officer. He looks disdainfully at her and the children and tells her she must choose only one who will live! That was This, it seems to me, was similar to the heartless game that Cromwell employed that day when he forced the rebels to cast dice for their lives! What was the difference between the Christian, religiously motivated Cromwell and the fanatical Nazi Officer? Was one any better than the other?

Military History / English Civil War
Step back in time to a period of great civil strife and unrest in 17th century England. Today there are many spots of unspoilt beauty, castles and monuments steeped in the history of the English Civil Wars . Let us guide you to the battle sites so you can imagine for yourself the spray of musket fire and clash of armour.
Beginning at Warwick Castle , an important base during the English Civil War, you will find the helmet of one of the principal figures, and the only Englishman ever to have been offered the role of King, Oliver Cromwell. If this is not enough to whet your appetite, Edgehill, near Stratford , has a fine panoramic view of the battlefield and Radway Tower. Naseby in Northampton is a rewarding battlefield to visit for it has changed little since the 17th century. Whereas the

Again at Chalgrove Field, the parliamentary army was beaten and John Hampden, one of main rebels against the king was killed. The Royalist forces won on behalf of the Parliament at other places too. Oliver Cromwell, the leader of the parliamentary forces set up an association of eastern counties. They formed a new army "Ironsides." At the battle of Marston Moor the royal army suffered heavily. A self-denying ordinance was passed. By this members of Parliament resigned their commands in the army and were replaced by experienced soldiers. Cromwell retained command over this army. This army was the "New Model." King Charles I took the advantage of the confusion between the Parliament and the army. He refused the demands of both. Attempting to take advantage of the political turmoil, the Scots invaded England. They were routed at the battle of Preston (August 1648). The second Civil War made Cromwell an undisputed leader of the masses. Nobody dared to oppose Cromwell. Now the nation was at the mercy of Cromwell and his army. Charles I was punished for his incurable duplicity. After a formal trial in 1649 Charles I was accused of treason and was executed, on January 30, 1649. He was beheaded before the White Hall. Cromwell called the execution of Charles I as a ’Cruel necessity.’ However, the last words of Charles were:

Click here to find out more The English Civil War Fighting breaks out between the Royalists and the Roundheads The armed conflict between king and Parliament wasn't the first civil war to divide England, but it was the first and only war in England to result in the abolition of the kingship. There had been uncertainty and distrust leading up to the first confrontation at Edgehill. Neither side had really meant to become embroiled in a bloody war. Both factions contained men whose sympathies could often be swayed towards the other. A great many Parliamentarians were appalled by the idea of fighting their own king. On the Royalist side, Sir Edmund Verney had considerable sympathy for the Puritans, but remained loyal to Charles because he had eaten at his table for so long that he felt unable to desert him. Verney was killed in battle, but his grip remained so strong that the standard could only be taken from him by cutting off his hand. The armies on both sides were led by aristocrats, and in the king's view, it was the nobility, particularly 'Chief rebel' the Earl of Essex (1631-83), who instigated the Civil War. Parliament held control of the Midlands, the east, and the southeast (including London), and had captured the Navy, but its victory wasn't a foregone conclusion. Indeed, Charles came close to overthrowing his enemies at Edgehill, while in 1643 there were several Royalist (who were dubbed Cavaliers because of their superior cavalry) victories and a drawn battle between the king's and Essex's armies at Newbury.

The Early Stuarts and the English Civil War
James I James I . Elizabeth was followed to the throne by James VI of Scotland, who became James I of England. James believed in the absolute power of the monarchy, and he had a rocky relationship with an increasingly vociferous and demanding Parliament. It would be a mistake to think of Parliament as a democratic institution, or the voice of the common citizen. Parliament was a forum for the interests of the nobility and the merchant classes (not unlike today, some would say).
The Gunpowder Plot . James was a firm protestant

However at this time England and Charles were in a constant state of war so Charles needed Parliament. He recalled Parliament but there were many power conflict between both Parliament and the King and the two sides later went to war. After a few years of battle Parliament were victorious and in 1649 Charles was executed. England became a republic however this lasted only until 1660 when the monarchy was restored. Conflict between Parliament and the King Charles I had dissolved the previous (short) Parliament for refusing to fund his war efforts but was forced to summon another in order to raise money to support his war against the Scots. The Long Parliament, which met on November 3, 1640, promptly demanded reform as the price for aid. It impeached and executed Charles's chief adviser, Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, for high treason, in the belief that he was the a major supporter of royal powers. The Parliament did much to deal with Charles including taking away power from the King's royal courts, insuring that Parliament would in- charge of whether or not it would be dissolved as well as stating that sessions of Parliament must be held at least once every three years.

Reviewed by Rochelle Caviness - July 29, 2001
Christopher Hibbert is a respected biographer and historian. He has written on a variety of historical topics ranging from the French Revolution to The Great Mutiny in India that occurred in 1857. As well as biographies of prominent personalities such as, Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria, King George III, Wellington, and Benito Mussolini to name just a sampling of Hibbert's many works. In Cavaliers and Roundheads: The English Civil War 1642-1649 Hibbert continues his efforts to write about history in a personable manner that opens up the broad vistas of the past to the general reader.
Rather than a strict history book, Cavaliers and Roundheads is more of a social history of England during the Civil War. He concentrates more upon what happened and how it affected people, than on what actually caused the events chronicled. This is a compelling look at the English Civil War. Hibbert's narrative is spiced with period writings and includes excerpts from letters and diaries.
He opens the book with a general overview of English history leading up to the Civil War. He then precedes to discuss the actual Civil War and Oliver Cromwell's reign as Lord Protector. The book concludes with an analysis of the effects that the Civil War had, and the direction that England took after the monarchy was restored. Throughout, Hibbert takes delight in offering personal peeks at the major personalities involved. For instance, when discussing the events leading up the eruption of the civil war, he describes one of the causes simply stating that, "The King was reluctant to recognize that his authority was limited by what it was possible to achieve..."

Oliver Cromwell (1599 - 1658)
'I'm a monarchist but I believe that the greatest Briton ever was Oliver Cromwell, a Republican revolutionary who killed the King. Why? Because he was an ordinary man with a passion for this country. When Britain stood on the verge of anarchy he emerged from obscurity to help give us Parliamentary democracy - our proudest ever achievement. Not bad for a Fenland farmer.' Cromwell: Richard Holmes's Greatest Briton Born in Huntingdon in 1599, to a gentleman's family of modest means, Cromwell became a zealous Puritan while studying at Cambridge. He was conservative in his clothing, with a composed demeanour. When he became an MP and reached parliament, his commanding voice and fervour marked him out. He was elected to represent Cambridge City during the reign of Charles I - in the Short Parliament of April-May 1640, then in the Long Parliament lasting from August 1640 to April 1660. From the outset the Long Parliament refused to authorise any funding until Charles I - who was bankrupt - was brought to book. Soon the king was stripped of his power and parliament took control of fiscal policy and placed the army and navy under parliamentary supervision. Civil war between royalists (Cavaliers) and parliamentarians (Roundheads) broke out in 1642, following Charles's failed attempt to arrest five MPs, and this was when Cromwell came into his own.
