    Overview
Did you ever wonder what would happen if we ran out of all the electricity in the world? Think of all the things that wouldn't work: lights, computers, medical equipment, refridgerators. You can probably think of a thousand other things that wouldn't be possible without electricity. But could we ever really run out of electricity? Through this Co-NECT Conservation Project, we hope to explore this question while we also look at ways to conserve energy to insure that we never run out.
Check out our Results so far!
Are you interested in sharing your results with students from around the country? Figure out the total KWH's of electricity that you use in one week and submit that data to the Co-NECT database. Then see how you compare with other schools from around the nation. Before you submit your data, make sure you have the following information available for your school:
  • Total KWHs of electricity used in a given week.
  • Total square meters of your school
  • Average outdoor temperature for the week when you measured KWHs
  • Whether your school has electrical heat.

NSF Electricity Module Charge and Atoms Lesson Plans How does static electricity work? When a piece of matter has more of one type of particle (electrons or protons) than another, we say it has a "charge". If two objects have the same charges, they will repel, or push away from one another, but if they have opposite charges they will attract one another. For example, if you rub a balloon with a wool sweater, the balloon will pick up electrons from the wool sweater and become "negatively" charged. If we bring this balloon near a wall, the negative balloon will repel the negative parts in the wall, and be attracted to the positive parts of the wall. In general, when you rub one object with another, one of the objects will puck up some of the other object's electrons. The Triboelectric List shows some common materials in order of how well they pick up electrons: TRIBOELECTRIC SERIES Gives up electrons easily

NSF Electricity Module Van de Graaff Lesson Plans Once the students have a firm grasp of static electricity, feel free to use the Van De Graff generator experiment for some great results.  I normally spend about 15 minutes reviewing static electricity and going over how the Van De Graff works before leaping into this experiment. Van De Graff Generator Lesson Plan Overview This experiment should strengthen the student’s appreciation for static electricity through its effects on their body. Purpose The students will observe and feel the power of static electricity as they are charged to about 30,000 volts using a Van De Graff machine. Materials A Van De Graff generator with a ground wire, a plastic stool Getting Ready The teacher should understand the safety issues with the Van De Graff machine, and be comfortable with the machine.  Students should know the rules of Van De Graff Safety and should repeat them to the teacher before using the generator. Motivate A picture of someone using the Van De Graff is better than words here. . .

    Energy and Electricity
    Objectives
    • Students will gain an understanding of the terms "volt," "amp," "watt," "watt-hour," and "kilowatt-hour."
    • Students will collect data about electricity consumption.
    • Students will work with equations.
    • Students will report findings to the class.
    Materials Procedures
  • Come to class prepared with some data from appliances in your own home, or in the school. Use this information to create problems that can be solved with the equation W = V x A.
  • Explain the terms "volt," "amp," "watt," "watt-hour," and "kilowatt-hour." This is not for high-school physics, so the technical aspects of electricity need not be covered; students are simply told that electricity has strength, or power, that is measured in amps, and that it is "pushed" into their homes by a force that is measured in volts. The amount of work that electricity does is measured in watts, and the amount of work done in an hour is measured in watt-hours. One thousand watt-hours equals one kilowatt-hour. Consumers are charged for their electricity by the kilowatt-hour.
  • Introduce students to the equation W = V x A (watts = volts x amps), and work some problem examples on the board.

    Solar energy lesson plans
A series of three lesson plans are now available, covering the basics of solar cells and solar electric systems. They are primarily intended for high school science students, but should be helpful to anyone wanting to understand how photovoltaic (PV) systems work. Development of these plans is made possible by the Oregon Million Solar Roofs Coalition, with funding from the Oregon Office of Energy , through the federal Million Solar Roofs Initiative , which is administered by the U.S. Department of Energy.
Students are introduced to the basic physics and chemistry behind the operation of a solar cell. They will learn how a single crystal silicon cell accepts energy from light and turns it into electricity. Download this in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) , or as a Microsoft Word document . Please contact us for sample questions with suggested answers.
Students are introduced to the components of a solar electric system and the concept of the photovoltaic IV curve. They will learn how modules are put together to generate the desired voltage and current, and how an inverter helps the system to operate efficiently. Download this in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) , or as a Microsoft Word document . Please contact us for sample questions with suggested answers.
