El Salvador lies on the Pacific coast of Central America, bordering Honduras and Guatemala. Six million people live in an area the size of Massachusetts, making it the most densely populated country in the region. San Salvador, the capital, has a population of half a million. El Salvador's terrain is diverse. Mountains divide the country into three distinct regions: the southern coastal belt, the central valleys and plateaus, and the northern mountains. The climate is semitropical, and there are distinct wet and dry seasons. The rainy season typically lasts from May to October.
Spanish is the official language and is spoken throughout the country. Ninety-five percent of the population is classified as Mestizo, meaning of mixed Spanish and Indian descent.
Economy and Government
Agriculture continues to be the prominent economic activity. Coffee and sugar cane are the main cash crops, and maize, sorghum, rice, and beans are the principal food crops.
The rural population is significantly poorer than the urban: close to two thirds of rural people live in poverty. El Salvador is one of the most ecologically devastated countries in the Western Hemisphere, with more than 95 percent of its tropical deciduous forest destroyed and less than 12 percent forest coverage remaining, of which 5 percent is planted with coffee and accompanying shade trees.

History of Chile under Salvador Allende and the Popular Unity
INTRODUCTION But now, after his ill-fated trip to Great Britain, the wall of immunity that Pinochet had built around himself and his collaborators in the Chilean military appears to be collapsing. In a 14 to 6 vote, the Chilean Supreme Court removed Pinochet's congressional immunity, making it likely he will stand trial for his alleged involvement in the torture and deaths of thousands who opposed his military regime. The way would then at last be cleared for those Chileans still seeking justice -and the full truth- on behalf of their tortured, killed, or vanished relatives and friends. Finally, having undertaken this research as a graduate student of History at the City University of New York for the course The Historian and the Computer, the purpose of this website is to provide the visitor with a comprehensive description of several events that led to the downfall of Salvador Allende and the Popular Unity government.
BIBLIOGRAPHY The single best historical source for this period is Los mil dias de Allende Another important source is Chile: la memoria prohibida Tanquetazo and ends in 1983.

Few Spanish women came to the country, however, so many Spanish men took Native American women as their mates. Today nearly 90 percent of the population is mestizo, of mixed European and Native American descent. People of purely Native American descent represent about 5 to 10 percent of the population, while people of European descent represent only about 1 percent. El Salvador’s population, 5.2 million according to the 1992 census, was estimated at 6,237,662 in 2001. It grew rapidly during the 20th century, at times increasing more than 3 percent a year. According to a 2001 estimate, El Salvador is the most densely populated country on the mainland of the Americas, with 296 persons per sq km (768 per sq mi). This compares with only 12 inhabitants per sq km (31 per sq mi) in 1821 and 38 per sq km (98 per sq mi) in 1900.

El Salvador Time and Date El Salvador Government Back to Top El Salvador’s 1983 constitution—the 23rd in its history—provides for a representative government with three independent branches: executive, legislative, and judicial. It mandates universal suffrage for all citizens over the age of 18. Despite the republican and democratic provisions of its constitutions, a small, elite group of landowners and military officers has historically dominated government in El Salvador. Since the civil war of the 1980s, however, more-democratic procedures have been adopted, including reforms of the electoral system and inclusion of former leftist guerrillas in the political system. More people in other social classes have participated in government.

Country Info El Salvador Introduction El Salvador General Data El Salvador Maps El Salvador Culture ... El Salvador Time and Date El Salvador Plants and Animal Back to Top Because of its high population density and fairly intensive farming, only 6 percent of El Salvador’s land remains as forest. This has limited the survival of animal life to a greater extent than in other Central American states. Habitat destruction and logging have caused many animal species to become rare or to disappear altogether, notably the crested eagle and the jaguar. Among the mammals still found wild in El Salvador are the monkey, coyote, puma, and ocelot, along with a great variety of small animals. Reptiles include the iguana and boa constrictor, and there are 420 different bird species, including 17 varieties of hummingbirds. The Salvadoran government has established natural reserves and parks to preserve natural habitats, the most important of which are at Montecristo National Park, El Imposible National Park, Cerro Verde, Deininger Park, and El Jocotal Lagoon.

    GOVERNMENT AND POLITICAL CONDITIONS
El Salvador is a democratic republic governed by a president and an 84-member unicameral Legislative Assembly. The president is elected by universal suffrage and serves for a 5-year term by absolute majority vote. A second round runoff is required in the event that no candidate receives more than 50% of the first round vote. Members of the assembly, also elected by universal suffrage, serve for 3-year terms. The country has an independent judiciary and Supreme Court.
The most recent presidential election, in March 1999, was free and fair, but voter turnout was low (39%). ARENA presidential candidate Francisco Guillermo Flores Perez faced Facundo Guardado of the FMLN party and won with 52% of the votes. Since Flores received just over 50% of the votes, a runoff was not required. Francisco Guillermo Flores Perez of the ARENA party began his 5-year term as president in June 1999, and cannot succeed himself. In the March 2000 legislative races, FMLN won 31 seats in the Legislative Assembly, the ARENA won 29, the National Conciliation Party (PCN) 14, the PDC five, and the Coalition Democratic United Center (CDU) and National Action Party (PAN) won 3 and 2 seats, respectively.
As of March 2002, defections and realignments in the Assembly left ARENA with 29 seats, the FMLN with 26, the PCN, 15, and the FMLN-splinter 'Renewal Movement (MR)' 5. The governing ARENA party retains a working majority (43) with its PCN allies. The defection of five FMLN dissidents (MR) also stripped the FMLN of its ability to block qualified (two-thirds) majorities required for major legislation, including approval of international loans and confirmation of supreme court justices. The FMLN retains the capital city of San Salvador, where Hector Silva was re-elected overwhelmingly in 2000. Low voter turnout (35% in 2000) remains a concern.
