Ecuador's Geography
Highly Unique in the World

The Republic of Ecuador straddles the Equator, and is bordered by Colombia to the north and northeast, and Peru to the south and southeast. Although it is one of the smallest countries in South America (about the size of Nevada), Ecuador is one of the
most geographically and ecologically diverse countries in the world. Endowed with a dramatic topography, Ecuador features five distinct ecological "zones" with unique climates, vegetation, and wildlife. Without leaving the country, you can experience the rainforest, the mountains, and the seacoast!
Five million years ago the mountain range now named the Andes appeared, dividing Ecuador into two low forested plains and a narrower, intermediate band bordered by the "Avenue of the Volcanoes." About the same time, a cluster of islands were forming 1,000 Km. off Ecuador's Pacific coast. The Galapagos archipelago is comprised of 13 large islands, six smaller ones and over 40 islets. Together they cover 7,500 sq. Km. Most are south of the equator where several marine currents converge. To see a map of Ecuador

It is one of the smallest nations of the continent, with a surface area of approximately 270,000 square kilometers (104,000 square miles). Its neighbors are Colombia to the north and Peru to the south. Andean Highlands. Two roughly parallel ranges of the Andes, connected by transverse ridges, form the Ecuadorean highlands known as La Sierra. In the northern Sierra, ten snowcapped volcanic summits tower more than 5000 meters (16,500 feet) above sea level. These volcanoes are set some distance apart from one another, each majestically dominating its own territory. In the southern Sierra the mountains are older, lower, more eroded, and nonvolcanic, resulting in a confused topography of bare sculpted peaks and deeply incised valleys. A wilder landscape is to be found on the outer slopes of the Andes, which are covered with cloud forests known as

Located on the west coast and straddling the equator, Ecuador has a total area of about 280,000 square kilometers, which includes the Galápagos Islands. Roughly the size of the state of Colorado, Ecuador encompasses a wide range of natural formations and climates, from the desertlike southern coast to the snowcapped peaks of the Andes Mountains to the plains of the Amazon River Basin (see fig. 3 Ecuador is bounded on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Colombia, and on the east and south by Peru. Ecuador continues to contest the boundary with Peru, which was established by the Protocol of Peace, Friendship, and Boundaries (Rio Protocol) of 1942 and ceded to Peru a large portion of territory east of the Andes (see Reform, Chaos, and Debacle, 1925-44 , ch. 1). Sierra composed of two major chains of Andes MountainsCordillera Occidental (Western Chain) and Cordillera Oriental (Eastern Chain)and intermontane basin or plateau between the two chains. Cordillera Occidental contains Ecuador's highest peak, 6,267-meter Mount Chimborazo. Oriente consists of Andean piedmont and eastern lowlands. Galápagos are islands of varied size located 1,000 kilometers west of Ecuadorian coast. Climate: Tropical climate throughout Costa, although variations in temperature and rainfall result from proximity to warm or cool ocean currents. Sierra climate ranges from tropical to frozen, depending on altitude; notable rainfall variations also occur. Tropical climate and abundant rainfall prevail in Oriente. Neill The name Ecuador is Spanish for equator, and the country straddles the geographic equator, from about 1°30'N to 5°S latitude; mainland Ecuador extends from about 75°20'W to 81°W longitude. An important event in the history of world geography was the 1736 geodesic expedition led by the French geographer C. M. de La Condamine, when the region was part of the Spanish Empire. La Condamine and his colleagues measured arcs of the Earth's curvature on the equator near Quito and near Pedernales on the Pacific coast; these measurements enabled the first accurate determination of the size of the Earth and led to the establishment of the international metric system of measurement. The fame brought to the region by the French geodesic expedition evidently influenced the adoption of the name, Republic of Ecuador, when the country gained independence in 1830. Ecuador - as the name implies - lies draped across the equator. The country can be divided into four regions: the western coastal lowlands, the central Andean highlands, the eastern jungles of the Amazon basin and the Galápagos Islands. The world famous Galápagos Islands were Ecuador's first national park and are celebrated for their unique and fearless wildlife.
Thanks to its agreeable climate and patchwork of habitats (alpine grasslands, coastal swamps, tropical rainforest), Ecuador is one of the most species-rich nations on earth. Dubbed by ecologists a 'megadiversity hotspot,' it boasts 300 species of mammal alone, including monkeys, sloths, llamas and alpacas. Birdwatchers come from all over to see the famous Andean condor, but there are plenty of other bird species, and about half of the 58 species found on the Galápagos Islands are endemic.
    The highlands
People who have never visited Ecuador often picture it as a land of steamy jungle astride the Equator, bordered by the Pacific Ocean. They are unaware that a large area known as Andean Sierra, dominated by a range of towering volcanoes and highland valleys that form a significant, temperate ecological region.
Five million years ago, at the beginning of the Pliocene period, the mountain range now known as the Andes appeared, dividing Ecuador into two low forested plains and a narrower, intermediate band bordered by the "Avenue of the Volcanoes." Here in developed an indigenous flora and fauna adapted to low temperatures, strong winds, intense ultraviolet radiation, rain, hail, snow and high altitudes. Ecuador is divided from north to south by the Andean Cordillera, forming three important profile area groups: the Eastern Cordillera, the Inter-Andean region with various basins and valleys, and the Western Cordillera.
