Academy of Leisure Sciences (ALS) ALS is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of research in the leisure sciences. Members of ALS are interested in research related to tourism, retirement, health, the economy, and recreation therapy. ALS publishes 'white papers' on current leisure-related issues, and holds annual meetings. ALS also sponsors a Future Scholars Program. Master's students interested in pursuing a doctorate in recreation and parks, leisure studies, recreation resources management, or a related field are invited to apply. Selected applicants are invited to participate in the Annual Congress of the National Recreation and Park Association as guests of the Academy of Leisure Sciences, the Society of Park and Recreation Educators (SPRE), and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). contact:

    The Demography of Corporations and Industries
    Glenn R. Carroll and Michael T. Hannan
    Shopping Cart
    Reviews Table of Contents Most analysts of corporations and industries adopt the focal perspective of a single prototypical organization. Many analysts also study corporations primarily in terms of their internal organizational structures or as complex systems of financial contracts. Glenn Carroll and Michael Hannan bring fresh insight to our understanding of corporations and the industries they comprise by looking beyond prototypical structures to focus on the range and diversity of organizations in their social and economic setting. The result is a rich rendering of analysis that portrays whole populations and communities of corporations. The Demography of Corporations and Industries is the first book to present the demographic approach to organizational studies in its entirety. It examines the theory, models, methods, and data used in corporate demographic research. Carroll and Hannan explore the processes by which corporate populations change over time, including organizational founding, growth, decline, structural transformation, and mortality. They review and synthesize the major theoretical mechanisms of corporate demography, ranging from aging and size dependence to population segregation and density dependence. The book also explores some selected implications of corporate demography for public policy, including employment and regulation.

    School Overview
    Studying in the School of Biological Sciences at UCI is a unique experience. Because the curriculum is interdisciplinary, students learn not only how the birds and the bees function (physiology), but also how they behave as they do (neurobiology and behavior), and how they interact with each other (ecology). Students study genetics, developmental and cell biology, biochemistry, and molecular biology as well. Students pursue the Biological Sciences Core, an interdisciplinary sequence of lecture and laboratory courses which provides a broad yet intensive education in modern experimental biology and concepts that underlie biologicial phenomena. Advanced courses, called "satellites," expand upon and intensify areas covered in the Core, enabling students to focus on a particular area of interest. The School of Biological Sciences reflects new concepts of biology in both its curriculum and its research programs. The faculty is dedicated to providing students with the opportunity to learn the principles and facts in the ever-expanding field of biology. The School encourages vigorous faculty and student research programs and strongly believes that excellence in research is essential for effective, enthusiastic, and up-to-date teaching.
    Academic Offerings
    Biological Sciences
    The Biological Sciences major presents a unified, in-depth study of modern biology commencing with the Biological Sciences Core, an 11-quarter series of courses ranging from diversity, ecology, genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology, to cell biology, physiology, and neurobiology. Through upper-division laboratories, students acquire important laboratory techniques and learn scientific methodology. In their third and fourth years, students continue to receive diverse exposure to the biological sciences or gain a much more in-depth study of a particular area through upper-division satellite courses.

    The Life Cycle of Business is Studied Through Organizational Ecology
    August 2002 What makes some businesses sprout, grow, adapt, and succeed, while most never get off the ground? Researchers in the growing field of organizational ecology say it is not enough to study the companies that thrive. Answers lie in the stories of failure. Research By William P. Barnett
    Professor of Strategic Management and Organizational Behavior Glenn R. Carroll
    Laurence W. Lane Professor of Organizational Behavior and Change;
    Professor of Sociology (by courtesy)School of Humanities and Sciences Michael T. Hannan
    StrataCom Professor of Management;
    Professor of Sociology, School of Humanities and Sciences The year was 1908, and the new, new thing that drew these entrepreneurs was the internal combustion engine. Their firm, the Stanford Automobile and Manufacturing Co., shared the same fate as the Divine Motor Car Co. of Chicago, McHardy of Detroit, and more than 1,600 others that entered the industry between 1900 and 1920, only to fade into oblivion. They call their approach "organizational ecology." This perspective tries to capture the full range and diversity of corporations, through their birth, growth, transformation, and mortality. Organizational ecology yields insights into how industries develop and change over time. Many of the findings in the field have challenged conventional wisdom about competition, demanding the attention of policy makers and business leaders alike.
