Using the Child's Environment To Teach at Home and School. ERIC/CSMEE Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC The world of a child is the tangible, real world of the here and now. It is difficult for children to extend ideas from the small, familiar world in which they operate to the larger, abstract world beyond. Even adults envision distant parts of the world based on their own experiences and prior learning. Nevertheless, the global concepts of environmental education, the basic principles of ecology, and the importance of environmental responsibility can be instilled in a child without reference to faraway places. These ideas can all be made concrete right where the child lives and goes to school.
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF ECOLOGY
One of the fundamental tenets of ecology is that all activities have by-products. In environmental education, it is understood that this tenet applies to all activities of nature, both natural and human-induced. Some of these by-products are called "pollution." Though pollution tends to have a negative connotation, not all pollution necessarily affects the environment adversely (Botkin and Keller, 1982).

Packing Material Activities
1. Watch Them Melt

Kids will delight in making "Disappearing soup!" Fill a bowl with water and add some Renature® Foam Pellets. Stir the pellets and water with a spoon or squeeze it with your hands. Will warm water made it dissolve faster? What do you think? Try it! This "Disappearing Soup" is fun for young children to "feed" toy animals and school-aged children will love adding other kitchen fare to make a creative concoction.
2. Teach Ecology
Take clear plastic cups or a glass-measuring cup and layer it with potting soil (or dirt), then Nature Foam, and then more soil. Add water, and let it sit awhile. What do you predict will happen? Now take another clear container and add soil. Then add some cut-up juice boxes and plastic wrap. Finish with a layer of soil. Add water, and let it sit awhile. What does this teach us about ecology?
3. Make a Hat
Use a paper bowl for the base of your hat, or cut a circle into the middle of a paper plate, and use the plate as the base for a brim. Simply dampen pieces of the Renature® Foam Pellets and stick to the base of your hat. To dampen: dab onto a wet sponge or lick it - it's all-natural!
4. Create a Basket of Flowers

:: Habitat and location
Guandera is in the midst of the last remaining extensive stretch of high altitude cloud forest, an area in which less than 4% of the original forests were left intact. This forest is found only on the inter-Andean slopes (in the valley between eastern and western cordilleras) and the Reserve draws its name from the large Guandera (Clusia flaviflora) which dominate this unusual and threatened forest. This forest, between 3100 meters and 3600 meters, is unique on a world scale because of the remarkable biodiversity and immense trees found at such extreme altitudes. Norman Myers has recently classified the Andean Mountain forests as the world's first "conservation hotspot". An initial botanical inventory by Walter Palacios and Galo Tipáz (1996), revealed over 60 tree species, several of which were previously unknown to science. Per area diversity exceeds 40 species per 1/10 hectare, a world record for altitudes over 3000 meters. Rare high altitude orchids abound and initial surveys suggest a strong likelihood that new orchids, previously unknown to the scientific community, will be described from Guandera. The distinctive Melastomataceae also exhibit a surprising diversity of forms, from small shrubs to full canopy trees. Biomass per hectare equals that of lowland Amazonian forest, again defying expectations and setting a world record for high altitude forest. Guandera's house
