Barnes "The present is the key to the past" has been a key concept used by geologists in interpreting their field observations since it was first proposed by the pioneering Scottish geologist James Hutton in 1785. It is a reminder to geologists that, by studying modern geologic processes, we can understand what went on in the past to create the features that we find preserved in ancient rocks. This concept is not much different than the "history repeats itself" concept of historians, who usually deal with events that occurred hundreds of years rather than hundreds of thousands or hundreds of millions of years ago. Taken together, these concepts suggest that Earth will, at times, be a scary place in the future. But is all well with our mature "Mother Earth"? Not necessarily. Without any help from man, and despite the over 4 billion years that Earth has had to settle down, earthquakes such as those at New Madrid, Mo. (1811, magnitude greater than 7), and Charleston, S.C. (1886, magnitude greater than 6), will continue to occur. They will be infrequent, but even with present technology there will be no warning. At present, we cannot even do a very good job of predicting where east-coast earthquakes will occur. What does the future hold for an Earth dominated by mankind? There will be more landslides and sinkholes than would otherwise be the case because we have a constant need to rearrange the landscape so that we can construct buildings and highways to accommodate an ever-increasing population. Many of these landslides and sinkholes are preventable, but not all will be prevented. Better news coverage in the electronic era will spread news of sinkhole collapses and call attention to municipalities that employ poor storm-water management plans, thus providing disincentive for further development in such places.

"This is a top Clinton Administration environmental priority for 1998," said Sherri W. Goodman, deputy undersecretary of defense for environmental security. Across the Air Force, bases will celebrate Earth Day by sponsoring trash clean-ups, planting trees, holding environmental awareness programs, games, picnics and educational events. The Department of Defense is also taking applications for grants of up to $2,000 to buy native plants for areas where restoration projects have been designed in partnership with installations and local schools and civic organizations. The Concept Each grade performs one song, and all grades join in on songs for the finale. Preparation With the exception of the finale, music preparation is divided among the classes, eliminating the need for extensive combined rehearsals. It is recommended that you use recordings when appropriate. Using recordings allows students to become familiar with a consistent tempo and performance routine (the introduction, when the students begin to sing, interludes, endings, and so on). The recordings are beautiful and, when played through an auditorium sound system, provide an excellent accompaniment track for your program. Live piano accompaniment for some songs is sometimes preferred. The choice is yours. Staging Suggestions How you stage a program like this one depends on the structural set up in your school's auditorium or gymnasium. (A senator is a person that the people of the United States have chosen to help make the laws.) Senator Nelson knew that our world was getting dirty and that many of our plants and animals were dying. He wondered why more people weren't trying to solve these problems. He talked to other lawmakers and to the President. They decided that the President would go around the country and tell people about these concerns. He did, but still not enough people were working on the problem. Then, in 1969, Senator Nelson had another idea. He decided to have a special day to teach everyone about the things that needed changing in our environment. He wrote letters to all of the colleges and put a special article in Scholastic Magazine to tell them about the special day he had planned. (Most of the schools got this magazine and he knew that kids would help him.) On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was held. People all over the country made promises to help the environment. Everyone got involved and since then, Earth Day has spread all over the planet. People all over the world know that there are problems we need to work on and this is our special day to look at the planet and see what needs changing. Isn't it great? Things to discuss when it comes to saving resources... Recycling is when an object can be shredded, melted or otherwise processed and then turned into new raw material for instance, aluminum cans can be melted down to make more cans, glass can make more glass, cardboard and paper make more coardboard and paper, plastic bags and containers can be turned into other plastic products. This takes some energy (very little for aluminum), but it is a good choice. Reusing is when you find a use for an existing item - like decorating a bag and using it as a gift bag instead of buying wrapping paper; putting leftovers into a clean container from some other food; turning a used box into storage; decorating a can to hold pencils; saving packing peanuts and boxes and using them the next time you need to ship something or give a gift. Giving things in good condition that you no longer need to charity is another good way to reuse things like outgrown clothing or toys. Reusing is often the best way to save resources. This is something to consider year-round, not just around the winter holidays.

" - American Heritage Magazine, October 1993 Earth Day was born out of former Senator, Gaylord Nelson's conviction that the declining state of our environment had for too long been a non-issue on our national political stage. He believed that a dramatic event was necessary to focus national attention and dialogue on the environment. Thirty years ago he envisioned a nation-wide "teach-in" on the environment and announced that it would take place in the Spring of 1970. That teach-in became the first Earth Day and an estimated 20 million people from 140 countries participated. The event was pivotal in making the environment a permanent issue in American politics and culture.
