History of the Czech Republic.
We have divided the history of the Czech Republic into two logical categories. The first section concentrates on history from the beginning of the 5th century with the arrival of the Slavs in what is known now as Moravia and Slovakia, until the movement to restore the country to a federalist state in the latter half of the nineteenth century. As you can imagine the entire history of fourteen centuries would be enough to fill a book-shelf, so we have condensed the information to provide an insight into the main points of historical importance. Early History The second section concentrates on modern history of the Czech Republic, namely the influences of two world wars, the Nazis and the communists. How the country of Czechoslovakia regained its independence in 1989 and later split into two separate states being the Czech and Slovak Republics. Modern History I hope that you enjoy reading these pages and that we are able to help you understand more about the culture and importance of this small eastern European country. May be you will feel encouraged to holiday there after viewing this site, I do hope so, nothing can compensate for viewing the history and culture of this country first hand.

Now it's already more than 20 years back in the history, but it has affected our destiny and we still can feel the touch of that past in our contemporary life.
Children at school were taught, that it was international brotherly help, not agression. They tried to twist the history in many ways. People were afraid to talk freely...

The Slavs started settling in this part of Europe around 5th century AD and those who moved into Bohemia were, according to the legend, led by a chief called Cech. Cech decided to settle in the area after surveying the fertile countryside from the top of the hill Rip. The ancestors of Czech and Slovaks became united in the early 9th century in the Great Moravian Empire . It was around this time when Christianity was spread by two Greek missionaries Cyril and Methodius, who came to the country after the Moravian leader Count Rostislav appealed in 863 to the Emperor Michael of Byzantium to send clergy capable of expounding the Christian faith in the language of the Slavs. The brothers preached in the Slav language, created a new Slav alphabet and translated religious texts that laid foundations for further development of Slav literature. After the death of Rostislav, his sucessor allied himself with German clerics and the Slav liturgy was replaced with the Latin-Germanic. Moravia and Bohemia came under the influence of Roman Catholic Church and the Slav liturgy and script were driven eastwards. At the beginning of the 10th century the Great Moravian Empire did not withstand the Magyar invasion and broke up. Its southern part, Slovakia, came under Magyar rule and was incorporated into the new country the Magyars created. This rule was to last for a whole millennium, until the emergence of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918. Moravia, on the other hand, became integrated into Bohemia, which was in the meantime developing into an important power in its own right.

Symbolism and history of the flag
From: http://users.aol.com/mpgregor/private/flags.htm this information by Hugh Agnew Background of the state flag and coat of arms
The official coat of arms of the Czech Republic is based on the arms of the lands of the Czech crown in the middle ages. The emblem of Bohemia proper (once it had replaced the Premyslid "flaming eagle" still used in depiction of St. Vaclav) is a white lion with two tails, rampant on a red field. The two eagles represent Moravia and Silesia. The red-and-white chequerboard eagle on a blue field is Moravia, which was referred to by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa as an independent Margraviate in the twelfth century, though it was soon tied firmly to the lands of the Czech crown by the tradition of making the Czech king or his heir margrave. The black eagle on the gold field represents Silesia. Only fragments of the historical territory of Silesia remain in the Czech Republic today, around Opava and Tesin, but all of it came under the Czech crown during the reign of John of Luxemburg and his son Charles IV.
Many European national flags derive from former royal coats of arms, and the Czech one is no exception. Since a complicated coat of arms could not be seen from a distance during a conflict, the coat was reduced to a standard displayed on a lance point, usually (following the customary descriptions of coats of arms) as bars of horizontal colors. So, the Czech kings flew a standard of a bar of white "on" a bar of red, representing the white lion on the red field.

"A Beer-Drinker's Odyssey Begins on the River Vltava"
The world was astounded in 1913 when it was discovered that as many as 19 types of beer were brewed in Mesopotamia 5,000 years ago. It is fitting that the archaeologist who first deciphered the Sumerian tablets containing this information was a Czech, Bedrich Hrozny. Beer was also brewed in the earliest Czech civilizations (there is evidence that hops were already being cultivated here in 859 and were being exported in 903 - the first written documentation referring to brewing dates from 1088), and even British beer authority Michael Jackson agrees that the Czechs are the number one beer-brewing nation in the world today. The Czech Beer Firsts are many and varied!
  • First in per capita beer consumption
  • First Beer Museum in the world
  • First beer brewing textbook
  • First Pilsener
  • First Budweiser
  • First president to have written an absurdist play based on his
experiences working in a Czech beer brewery in AD 1974
The history of beer in the Czech Lands stretches back a thousand years, mirroring the ups and downs of Czech history through the ages. For more information, read Part One of the Radio Prague Czech Beer FAQ - History of Czech Beer!

Viktor Kalabis - Czech Contemporary Composer
Viktor Kalabis / born 27 February 1923, Cerveny Kostelec / studied composition at the Prague Conservatory and the Academy of Arts and Music under Emil Hlobil and and Jaroslav Ridky (1945 - 1952) and at the sane time philosophy and musical science at Charles University. Between 1953 - 1972 he was employed as an editor and musical producer of the Czechoslovak Radio in Prague, since 1972 he has devoted himself exclusively to creation.
Although miost of the works by Viktor Kalabis belong to the sphere of the so-called absolute music, we must not fail to mention his vocal compositions - songs and choirs for children settings of folk poetry, and others. For Tereza Csaibok and the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra was written his cycle Five Romantic Love Songs to Words by R.M. rilke (sung on a gramophone record by Ernst Haeflinger). His first and so far only excursion to the sphere of stage forms was his ballet in two parts called "Two Worlds", inspired by L. Carroll s book "Alice in Wonderland".
The compositions by Viktor Kalabis won a number of prizes in state-wide competitions. In 1967 he was awarded the Prize of Czechoslovak Musical Critics, in 1969 the Klement Gottwald State Prize. In 1983 he was named Artist of Merit. However, great apreciation is represented by the fact that his works are constantly on the repertories of prominent Czechoslovak and world performing artists.
