62. The Language Of The Roma
An etymology of Romani with word comparisons to other related members of the IndoEuropean language family.Category Science Social Sciences Indo-Aryan Romani...... is unstable and is often replaced by words from a new contact language, in thecase of Slovak Roma living in the Czech Republic, from the czech language.

The Language of the Roma Back
The Romani language, even though it is now comprised of a number of different dialects , belongs to the family of Indo-European languages in a group that includes other languages of Indian origin, such as Hindi and Bengali. The affinity of Indo-European languages is revealed in various terms, such as the Czech bratr , English brother , Sanskrit bhratr , Romany phral (an aspirated p, not an /f/ sound). Romany, however, is far from a unified language. Due to the diaspora of individual groups of Roma, there are a number of main dialects of the Romani language, although Roma from different parts of the world are able to understand one another. The vocabulary of all dialects of Romany, just as in other languages, is made up of original words, loan-words, and newly-invented words. Original words are old words of Indian origin and words borrowed long ago, from Iranian languages, from Armenian and a number from Greek as well, in other words, from the countries through which all groups of Roma travelled on their way from India to Europe. This part of the Romani language is universal, and these words still survive in modern usage and appear in every dialect of Romany. Loan-words are those that were picked up by Romani groups as they spread out through Europe, from the tongues of the countries they travelled through after they left Asia Minor. In the case of the Slovakian Roma (who make up the majority of Roma in the Czech Republic), these loan-words come primarily from Serbo-Croatian, Hungarian, Slovak, Rumanian, Ukrainian, Polish, and German (from it's Swabian dialect). The words incorporated into Romany in this fashion are terms for what was unknown to them at the time. This vocabulary is unstable and is often replaced by words from a new contact language, in the case of Slovak Roma living in the Czech Republic, from the Czech language.

Czech Language Tagging
Several approaches to the tagging of texts have been proposed. The so-called stochastic strategies use various statistical models, namely Markov Models, Maximum Entropy Model and Exponential Model.
These strategies are classifieds as corpus-based - they work on annoatated corpora to achieve appropriate probabilities. To tag Czech texts, we concentrate mainly on the Markov Model and the Feature-based tagger. All papers related to the Czech tagging are listed bellow.

    Czech Language Morphology and Tagging
Practically every natural language processing system (machine translation, information retrieval, parsing, etc.) for (not only) an inflective language needs a morphologically processed text , i.e. to know for each word the list of all possible combinations (tags) of morphological category values which make sense for the given word. However, most the systems need more precise information. They need just a single combination of morphological category values (from the list of all available combinations) to be identified which fits to the particular context. The task called tagging uses the context of a word in the input text to select the correct tag from the list of all possible tags. When developing a morphological analyzer for a given language, it is necessary first to define a set of possible tags, which correspond to our linguistic notion of morphology. Each tag will contain such information (in the general sense) about the grammatical categories of the word form in question, which belong to the morphological level of natural language description. In the tag system developed for the Czech morphological processing, two equivalent tag notation systems have been developed. Both of them use a string symbols to denote a morphological tag. One of them is called "compact", the other one "positional". The compact tag system

Czech language is taught at ab initio, intermediate and advanced levels by a qualified native Czech teacher. Teaching is conducted mainly in Czech and you are encouraged to use Czech in class as much as possible.
In the First Year , you are introduced to the basics of Czech grammar for active and passive use. Classes focus on the development of oral, aural, reading and translating skills. The Department has now created a resources centre for self-study, including a class library of set texts and recent Czech magazines, and will soon include an archive of language and cultural studies materials for all levels.
In the Second Year , the emphasis is on improving your ability to express yourself in spoken and written Czech. Classes focus on more complex areas of grammar, on vocabulary-building, translation, oral presentation and writing skills. In preparation for time spent in the Czech Republic, the course is divided into themes reflecting aspects of contemporary Czech life, agreed at the outset by teacher and students.
The Third Year is spent abroad on a Socrates programme at Brno University or in another study or work placement in the Czech Republic approved by the Department.

The Czech Republic offers a fascinating social and cultural setting for service-learning because the nation is in an important period of transition from Soviet Communism to independence and privatization of many political, social, educational and cultural institutions. You will gain insight into the complexities of the Czech Republic by directly encountering the problems, challenges and attempted solutions brought about by these changes. Prague
The program is located in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, and one of Europe's most beautiful cities. Located in the heart of Europe on the Vltava River, it has been a center of trade, political life, culture, religion, and learning for over a thousand years. In the medieval and Renaissance periods it played a major role as the central city in historic Bohemia and as the capital for a time of the Holy Roman Empire. The famous reformer, Jan Hus, was rector of Charles University, which hosts the program. In the 20th century, Prague was a focus of resistance to Soviet domination of Central Europe. Today, it is a lively cultural center with dozens of daily concerts (at low or no cost), excellent museums and historic sites including the Prague castle, opera, theater, bookstores and bustling cafes and restaurants. Prague is a living museum of European architecture, including Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau.
