Australian Anna Wilson had to settle for another heartbreaking fourth place, just six seconds behind 41-year-old French veteran Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli who took the bronze. Zijlaard blitzed the field to win in a stunning 42min00sec to win from Mari Holden of the United States (42min37sec). It was Zijlaard's third gold medal at the Sydney Games, adding to her Olympic title and world record in the 3000m individual pursuit, gold in the road race and silver in the points race. Wilson, who went into both road events as a keen medal favourite, said she had been replaying the sprint finish in the road race over and over in her mind and was more regretful about that event.

A half century since a team of three athletes travelled to the 1948 games in London with the aim of attaining glory for a small British colony. With the exception of 1960, the last five decades have seen this nation represented in 12 Olympiads with a total of 90 athletes in eight different disciplines: badminton, boxing, cycling, shooting, swimming, track and field, weightlifting and yachting. It wasn't until the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo that Trinidad and Tobago returned to the fold as an independent nation with a team of ten competitors. It was on the athletic track that the greatest prosperity was attained. Edwin Roberts, an outstanding collegian with the University of North Carolina, made it to the final of the 200m where he earned a bronze medal. The 1972 Olympic Games in Munich saw two important records being established. Trinidad and Tobago fielded its largest ever contingent of 20 athletes, among whom a female sprinter, Laura Pierre was included for the first time. Once again, the top performances came on the athletic track.

The History of Irish Cycling Part Two Continued from Part One This article and images appear courtesy of Séamus Shortall Webmaster of Irish Cycle Racing Roche would be second four times, twice to his fellow Irishman and then twice again to Miguel Indurain who would take over from Kelly. In 1982 Kelly won the 12th stage in the Tour de France as well and four stages en route to overall victory in the Paris-Nice. Hundreds of Irish fans flooded across to Goodwood for the world championships that year. Kelly almost provided them with the result they hungered for but, after chasing down Hennie Kuiper, he had to settle for third place behind Giuseppe Saronni and a rising star in the person of Greg LeMond. He put the finishing touches to the 1983 season by winning the Tour of Lombardy when victory over Greg LeMond proved to be another significant milestone in his career. That year he had 16 wins despite the fact that he had missed out on much of the season with a broken collar bone suffered in the Tour des Midi-Pyrenees. Nobody expected what was to come in 1984, however. He won two stages en route to a second victory in the Paris-Nice and the three stages en route to a second overall victory in the Criterium Internationale as well as three stages and overall in the Tour du Pays Basque.

Nov. 5, 2002 Riding High on the Cycle of History By Brian Krause Reaching into his bag, Bieber retrieves a pair of binoculars and peers across the mammoth stadium to catch a glimpse of what could be causing the commotion. Adjusting the focus of his glasses, Bieber sees the face that will soon change the course of world history, the face of evil itself, the face of Adolf Hitler. A resident of the Schenley for 63 years, Bieber remembers the days when the street lamps were lit by hand, when there were civil defense blackouts, and when Foggy Bottom suffered from a frog infestation. He delivered newspapers to the Schenley building as a teenager, when the first Miss America Pageant winner, Margaret Gorman, still owned it. Fate introduced Bieber to the sport that would become his passion. While growing up in Southeast DC, the United States cycling champion, Charles Smithson, lived across the street from him. While one brilliant career ended, another started when Smithson retired and gave Bieber his equipment, bike, and jersey. Not long after, Bieber won his first title, District of Columbia champion, in 1927. A member of the Naval Reserves, just 28 days after Pearl Harbor, Bieber found himself called up to active duty and stationed aboard the USS Vestal, the second largest repair ship in the fleet. It was the Navy who taught him how to weld, and even sent him to GW to take math classes.
