12:13PM, Sep 30 Dutchwoman Leontien Zijlaard today claimed the mantle of most successful women's cyclist in Olympic history. Australian Anna Wilson had to settle for another heartbreaking fourth place, just six seconds behind 41-year-old French veteran Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli who took the bronze. Zijlaard blitzed the field to win in a stunning 42min00sec to win from Mari Holden of the United States (42min37sec). It was Zijlaard's third gold medal at the Sydney Games, adding to her Olympic title and world record in the 3000m individual pursuit, gold in the road race and silver in the points race. Wilson, who went into both road events as a keen medal favourite, said she had been replaying the sprint finish in the road race over and over in her mind and was more regretful about that event.

Clara Hughes finishes sixth in Olympic cycling time trial SYDNEY (CP) Canadian cyclist Clara Hughes said goodbye to road racing with a ride she ranked among her best.
She didn't add another Olympic medal to the two bronze she won at the 1996 Games, but what she did to finish sixth in the women's time trial Saturday filled her with pride.
Hughes, weakened by a cold that wouldn't go away, pushed herself to a threshold of pain beyond what most humans can endure.
"I'm so satisfied with what I did today," Hughes said. "I've had some pretty poor preparation because of some health problems.
"I've felt so bad in training. But everyone kept saying to me, 'Clara, you can do it, you can suffer more than anyone else.'

FIFTY YEARS HAVE PASSED since Trinidad and Tobago began its Olympic journey. A half century since a team of three athletes travelled to the 1948 games in London with the aim of attaining glory for a small British colony. With the exception of 1960, the last five decades have seen this nation represented in 12 Olympiads with a total of 90 athletes in eight different disciplines: badminton, boxing, cycling, shooting, swimming, track and field, weightlifting and yachting. It wasn't until the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo that Trinidad and Tobago returned to the fold as an independent nation with a team of ten competitors. It was on the athletic track that the greatest prosperity was attained. Edwin Roberts, an outstanding collegian with the University of North Carolina, made it to the final of the 200m where he earned a bronze medal. The 1972 Olympic Games in Munich saw two important records being established. Trinidad and Tobago fielded its largest ever contingent of 20 athletes, among whom a female sprinter, Laura Pierre was included for the first time. Once again, the top performances came on the athletic track.

History of Road Cycling: Cycling has enjoyed resurgence in Australia due largely to the success of Australian cyclists overseas. In recent years Australian Professionals’ such as Phil Anderson, Neil Stephens, Robbie McEwen and Stuart O’Grady have enjoyed stage wins in the Worlds biggest cycle race, "Le Tour de France". Phil Anderson and Stuart O’Grady remain the only two Australians’ to ever wear the leaders yellow jersey. Technology advances are making considerable differences to the average speeds of cyclists. At the 1992 Olympic Games, Britain’s Chris Boardman won the 4000m Individual Pursuit on his new "high-tech" bike, using lightweight and aerodynamic materials produced by Formula One racing car manufacturer, Lotus. Commonly used materials in a bicycles structure are carbon-fibre, titanium and aluminium. There are many Cycling events but the 3 primary disciplines conducted at the Olympic Games are Track, Road and Mountain Bike. Both Track and Road Cycling are Commonwealth Games disciplines, however Mountain Bike is still yet to be introduced. Did you know?

Saturn Cycling Team’s Clara Hughes Skates into Olympic History by Winning Winter and Summer Olympic Medals February 25, 2002
Salt Lake City, Utah
Saturn Cycling Team member Clara Hughes won an Olympic bronze medal in the 5,000-meter speed skating competition for Canada at the Olympic Oval during the Salt Lake Games on Saturday, February 23, 2002. In doing so, Hughes became only the fourth athlete in history to win both Winter and Summer Olympic medals.
In addition to her bronze medal in Salt Lake City, Hughes won two bronze medals in cycling at the 1996 Atlanta Games in the road race and time trial. Hughes joins Eddie Eagan of the United States, Jacob Tullin Thams of Norway and Christa Rothenburger-Luding of East Germany as the only athletes to win a medal in both an Olympic Winter and Summer Games.
Hughes, a two-time Olympic cyclist who attended the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympics said that she started to make plans to return to speed-skating after competing in Australia at the Sydney Games.
In 2001, Hughes competed at her first speed skating World Championships in Salt Lake City, placing 11th in the 3000-meter event. Although Hughes earned her Olympic bronze medal in the 5,000-meter event, she feels that if there was a women’s 10,000-meter event that she would thrive in it, and that "shorter" 3,000-meter events feel more like a sprint to her.

Cycling
Olympic cycling includes both individual and team competitions over different types of terrain. Olympic cycling has three distinct categories: "road racing," "track racing," and "mountain biking." Track events occur on steeply banked tracks called "velodromes." Road racing is racing on paved roadways. Mountain bike racing takes place off-road.

The Races
In time trials, competitors race against the clock to record the fastest time. In this all-out race, a cyclist is said to have "hit the wall" when his or her legs can no longer pedal at a rapid pace. Match sprints are three laps, with riders seeded on the basis of a 200-meter time trial. In pursuit races, two cyclists or teams of cyclists start off on opposite sides of the track. If one cyclist, or team, catches the other, the race is over. Otherwise, the winner is the first one to cross the finish line. Points races can be the most fun to watch but are among the most difficult to understand. The cyclist who has the most points usually wins; however, a rider can also win if he "laps the field" (goes ahead of everyone else by a lap) and maintains his advantage throughout the race regardless of his total points.

Union Cycliste Internationale HISTORY OF MALAYSIAN NATIONAL CYCLING FEDERATION It is not known when actually the sport of bicycle racing was introduced in Malaysia. From reliable sources it is believed that bicycle racing was introduced by British Soldiers posted to Malaya before 1938. It was only in 1938 that organised activities in the sport of bicycle racing began with a number of Road races being held in and around Kuala Lumpur. The first State in Malaysia to form an Association was Selangor in 1938 with a number of Bicycle Racing Clubs already in existence then such as the " Rough Riders " "Agas Wheelers" and others. With the formation of the Selangor State Cycling Association, cycling activities started to spread to other States like Perak, Melaka and Penang. The Malaysian National Cycling Federation was formed in 1953 thanks to the untiring efforts of the late Mr. Gurchan Singh and Captain C.O. Jennings (an officer of the New Zealand Regiment) with the States of Selangor, Melaka, Perak and Penang being affiliated members. The Registration Number of the Federation was RSM 146/55.

Roche would be second four times, twice to his fellow Irishman and then twice again to Miguel Indurain who would take over from Kelly. In 1982 Kelly won the 12th stage in the Tour de France as well and four stages en route to overall victory in the Paris-Nice. Hundreds of Irish fans flooded across to Goodwood for the world championships that year. Kelly almost provided them with the result they hungered for but, after chasing down Hennie Kuiper, he had to settle for third place behind Giuseppe Saronni and a rising star in the person of Greg LeMond. He put the finishing touches to the 1983 season by winning the Tour of Lombardy when victory over Greg LeMond proved to be another significant milestone in his career. That year he had 16 wins despite the fact that he had missed out on much of the season with a broken collar bone suffered in the Tour des Midi-Pyrenees. Nobody expected what was to come in 1984, however. He won two stages en route to a second victory in the Paris-Nice and the three stages en route to a second overall victory in the Criterium Internationale as well as three stages and overall in the Tour du Pays Basque.

    http://www.gwu.edu/~bygeorge/nov5ByG!/bieber.html
Nov. 5, 2002 Riding High on the Cycle of History By Brian Krause
Reaching into his bag, Bieber retrieves a pair of binoculars and peers across the mammoth stadium to catch a glimpse of what could be causing the commotion. Adjusting the focus of his glasses, Bieber sees the face that will soon change the course of world history, the face of evil itself, the face of Adolf Hitler.
A resident of the Schenley for 63 years, Bieber remembers the days when the street lamps were lit by hand, when there were civil defense blackouts, and when Foggy Bottom suffered from a frog infestation. He delivered newspapers to the Schenley building as a teenager, when the first Miss America Pageant winner, Margaret Gorman, still owned it.
Fate introduced Bieber to the sport that would become his passion. While growing up in Southeast DC, the United States cycling champion, Charles Smithson, lived across the street from him. While one brilliant career ended, another started when Smithson retired and gave Bieber his equipment, bike, and jersey. Not long after, Bieber won his first title, District of Columbia champion, in 1927.
A member of the Naval Reserves, just 28 days after Pearl Harbor, Bieber found himself called up to active duty and stationed aboard the USS Vestal, the second largest repair ship in the fleet. It was the Navy who taught him how to weld, and even sent him to GW to take math classes.
