Homeschooling
If the results of recent studies are any indication, homeschoolers have a lot to teach other parents interested in their children’s education. According to the National Home Education Research Institute , a homeschooling advocacy group in Salem, Oregon, homeschooled children score higher on standardized tests than public school students. Impressive. Plus there are indications – like the addition of "homeschooler" to the 1998 edition of the Merriam-Webster dictionary – that homeschooling is finding wide acceptance across the country and reaching out beyond its predominantly Christian roots. To find out what homeschoolers are doing right, and what lessons you can learn from them, stop by some of these homeschooling sites for activity ideas, tips on teaching, and general information on making learning more fun and meaningful.

Dinosaur cannibal unearthed in Madagascar

ARLINGTON, Va. The island of Madagascar, located off the southeast coast of Africa, was a dangerous place to live 65 million to 70 million years ago. Crocodiles swarmed in the rivers, and a 30-foot-long, meat-eating dinosaur named Majungatholus atopus stalked the plains. Like most meat-eating dinosaurs, Majungatholus had teeth perfectly suited for ripping into flesh. But what was on the dinosaur’s menu? Until now, that question was a mystery.

HOUGHTON, Mich., April 3 - Old man winter is still hanging on as northern Michigan was under a winter storm watch Thursday. So it is not unusual that Michigan Technological University (MTU) hosted engineering students from across the country last week to compete in a design competition for a “clean” snowmobile. Liberty Bell passes stress test
ARLINGTON, Va.—How do you move a wounded, 2,080-pound patriotic symbol? Very carefully. Recently, under the watchful eyes of curators, conservators, surveyors, and engineers, a team of riggers skillfully lifted the fragile Liberty Bell off the supports where it has been resting for the past 25 years. They found that the Bell can be safely moved into its new home this fall.

Helping Kids Cope with Media Coverage of War and Traumatic Events Prepared by the Media Awareness Network (MNet)
and Dr. Arlette Lefebvre, Staff Psychiatrist, Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto
The intense media coverage that accompanies traumatic events, such as war, acts of terrorism and natural disasters, can be very disturbing for children and teens. Certain young people are particularly vulnerable and some can be seriously distressed simply by watching TV replays of such events.
Parents, educators, health practitioners and others who work with kids can help to lessen anxieties arising from the coverage of catastrophic events if they:
Monitor
Don't assume that children are unaware of news events.
It's almost impossible to be unaware of current events in our information age. Even very young children hear and see more than we think, so it's important to question them about what they have learned and how they're feeling.
Look for signs of anxiety in children.
Some children are more susceptible to anxiety about events reported in the media. Various factors influence children's reactions, including age, temperament, a tendency to worry or a vivid imagination. Children are more likely to dwell on certain news events if they themselves have been victims of violence, war or similar tragedies, if they have relatives or friends living in the affected area, or if they have family in the military or in emergency-response professions.
