Who do you love?
Bo Diddley's gonna give you the answer this weekend
By Michael Schaefer Bo don't know Stowe. But when the blues legend swings into town Friday for an evening of rollicking on stage with his guitar, Bo will get to know Stowe and vice-versa. For entire generations of rock 'n' roll fans who groove to George Thorogood's rendition of "Who do you Love?" and anything Elvis rocked in the late 1950's, here's a greeting from Bo: "I want everyone to know that I'm the originator." Diddley is rock and blues history incarnate where it started and where it went. With classics from the 50's that have transcended the ages such as "Bo Diddley," "I'm a Man," "Hush Your Mouth," "Who Do You Love?" and "Pretty Thing," his place in popular music consciousness is assured. So is his place in the annals of music history he was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy at the 1998 Grammy Awards Ceremony. His list of achievements and honors and his recognition from his peers is so extensive it should make him blush, but it doesn't. "I'm more than a legend. I'm an icon, man."

http://www.stuorg.iastate.edu/mayas/
The Mexican-American Young Achievers Society (MAYAS) was established in 1989 by a group of students that decided there was a need for an organization on campus that would promote Mexican-American culture in a positive manner. With Jaime Hernandez, this group of students decided upon the name: The Mexican-American Young Achievers Society, or MAYAS. Although MAYAS originally started out with a group of Mexican- Americans, we embrace all cultures and races at ISU and invite everyone to participate in our organization.
When joining this organization, you will actively participate in the planning and implementation of events that share our culture with the rest of Iowa State University. Some current events are Hispanic Heritage Month, MAYAS' Fun Run, and various guest speakers and panels. You will meet students and hear and learn about experiences they may have gone through. MAYAS does numerous activities with ISU, the Ames community, and various schools around the state. Being part of MAYAS is the best way to be involed with a group of students who take pride in their heritage and are proud to share it. Be a part of this great experience while here at Iowa State University.

Wells has a diverse array of student organizations, and most students participate in extracurricular activities. Because of the relatively small size of the student body, every student who is motivated can take a leadership role in a campus organization. At Wells, even as a first-year student, you can obtain an upper-level position in student government, serve as an editor on a student publication, have a top role in a theatre/dance event or play on an athletic team. Incorporate strategies for violence prevention into your classroom teaching.
  • Teach students about the nature and extent of violence in society and in their community. Young people often believe "it can't happen to me." Complement discussion with instruction on how to avoid becoming a victim of crime. Prevent hate crimes by discussing and rejecting stereotypes of minority groups, encouraging interaction with members of different cultures, and encouraging an appreciation for diversity. Also ensure that educational materials reflect the many cultures of this society. Use existing courses to teach safety topics. For example, social studies or current events classes can discuss social unrest and resulting violence in society. English classes can write essays on self-esteem or interpersonal conflict, and art classes can design anti-violence posters. Videotape television news stories that describe actual incidents involving guns, and ask students to watch and discuss the tapes.

HOMEPAGE MMS Social Studies Use the links below to explore social studies content for each of our four grade levels: 5th Grade Social Studies Grade five social studies curriculum focuses around a regional study of North America based on various historical themes. Each unit of study consists of three sections - history geography , and life today , taught in sequence, which provides a unit structure with a stable platform for students to discover, interpret, and internalize information. Our program seeks to help students connect concepts from the state and district social studies content standards to the real world. Students are continually encouraged to strive to recognize the importance of historical thinking and historical knowledge in their own lives and in the world in which they live. Aside from the essential content covered in each activity and unit, our curriculum promotes the use of critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students are encouraged to begin viewing themselves as active, positive participants within society.

Home Misson Statement Board of Education Superintendent's ... Comment Form Social Studies “How can we know where we are going if we do not know where we have been?” This is the theme of the upper grade social studies program. By studying history we encourage students to be knowledgeable, active, and productive citizens. The middle school social program strives to graduate students who are cognizant of the world and possess a global perspective. The classroom instructional program is relevant, student centered, meaningful, and designed to engage students in learning activities that capture their interest and relate historic facts and events to current events and civics. Engaging students in activities that encompass information provided via the Internet, “Current Events” magazine, and other media accomplish this. Using current events as the focal point, students engage in discussion, pursue related research, and prepare and present written and oral presentations. The study of government is accomplished by engaging students in a variety of educational experiences. Upper grade students are exposed to the voting process, first through in-class elections of officers, and then through the use of a regulation voting machine in the election of student government representatives. This initiative culminates in a day spent with borough officials followed by a mock commissioner’s meeting held for the public.
