THE IMF/WORLD BANK/GATT/NAFTA/WTO/MAI/MILITARY COLOSSUS: THE ENFORCERS OF STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENTS AND UNEQUAL FREE TRADE
Keywords: (powerless, empower, capitalism and financiers, economists, sociology, civil-military relations, mercantilism, poverty, developing countries resources)
A synopsis of Chapter 10. When the universal result is low resource export prices and increased poverty, the IMF/World Bank/GATT/NAFTA/WTO/ MAI /military colossus can hardly claim their intent was to develop those countries. Just as the proto-mercantilist cities of the Middle Ages controlled the countryside's production and trade to lay claim to their wealth and mercantilist and neo-mercantilist empires claimed the wealth of their colonies (their countryside), the developing countries is today the dependent countryside producing cheap resources for emerging corporate mercantilists. Structural Adjustment [demanded by the IMF] is best summed up in four words: earn more, spend less. While such advice might be valid if it were given to only a few countries at once, dozens of debtors are now attempting to earn more by exporting whatever they have at hand; particularly natural resources including minerals, tropical crops, timber, meat and fish. With so many jostling for a share of limited world markets, prices plummet, forcing governments to seek ever-higher levels of exports in a desperate attempt to keep their hard currency revenues stable. The "export-led growth" model on which the fund and the World Bank insist is a purely extractive one involving more the "mining" than the management-much less conservation-of resources.

Emerging technologies promise to keep unemployment a major issue, even if all Western economies get out of recession. By 2010, China will introduce as much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as the entire world does today. And community breakdown is one of the most systemic, deep, and complex societal trends of the past 30 years, with no signs of any reversal. Precisely because we will have to live with these issues for the foreseeable future, only a long-term structural approach can successfully resolve these problems. Here I show how community currencies could contribute to tackling all three problems and also permit us to "retrofit" economic motivation to desirable human behavior.

Release #4224-99 (96 Civ. 7814) For Release: January 6, 1999 NEW YORK COURT ORDERS DEFENDANTS TO PAY OVER $7.1 MILLION IN CIVIL PENALTIES, AND ORDERS RESTITUTION IN EXCESS OF $2.3 MILLION TO CUSTOMERS IN CFTC ACTION INVOLVING ILLEGAL FOREIGN CURRENCY FUTURES FRAUD; CFTC Charged World Wide Currencies, Inc., United Currencies, Corp., and A+ Currencies Int'l, Inc. in 1996 with Fraud in the Offer and Sale of Illegal Currency Futures Contracts World Wide Currencies, Inc. a/k/a Worldwide Currencies, Inc., a/k/a Worldwide Currencies Ltd.; United Currencies, Corp. a/k/a United Currencies, Inc.; and A+ Currencies Int'l Inc. d/b/a International Currencies, Inc. The judgment orders the defendants jointly and severally to make restitution to customers in the amount of $2,380,797.85 and to pay a civil monetary penalty in the amount of $7,142,393.55. The judgment also permanently enjoins the defendants from violating provisions of the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA) and CFTC regulations and rescinds all contracts entered into by the defendants with their customers. The judgment, entered on December 23, 1998, is the culmination of proceedings that began on October 16, 1996, when the CFTC filed a four-count injunctive complaint against the defendants (see CFTC News Release #3959-96, October 17, 1996). In its anti-fraud action, the CFTC alleged that the defendants violated the CEA and CFTC regulations by offering and selling illegal currency futures contracts, cheating and defrauding customers in connection with the offer and sale of such contracts, violating the CFTC's registration requirements, and misappropriating customer funds. Shortly after the complaint was filed, the court entered an

Simple arithmetic underpinned trading throughout the Near East during the Bronze Age. Raw materials recovered from archaeological excavations in the Indus Valley, the Persian Gulf, Mesopotamia, Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean reflect the existence of long-distance trading during the Bronze Age, which united these regions into networks of commercial exchange. As each region relied on a different set of weights for trading, a straightforward conversion system must have been in operation. Here we describe a simple and universal conversion system that could have provided an economic key to the trade networks of the Old World between 2500 and 1000 BC Old World trading networks brought raw resources such as lapis lazuli, copper, tin, silver and gold, as well as exotic materials and artefacts such as cylinder seals, decorative pottery and carved stone vessels from far afield. Establishing equivalence between weight systems that were peculiar to different regions would have created comparable units of value as well as mutual confidence in buying and selling goods, which would have been essential for dealing with universally precious materials such as gold and silver. Many different weight systems were in operation in the Bronze Age (see Fig. 1

    History
Sagrians were the first big traders. They experienced that weighting metals was just too difficult way to complete payments. So merchants gathered together to solve this big problem. After long negotiations (i.e. after years) they decided to melt metals to a small disks with certain weight. On the other side they stamped blazon of grand-merchants guild (two stoats) and on the other side they stamped blazon of Sagrian (moon, sun and ship.) Agaries spread throughout the world with sagrians and dwarves were the next who become inspired minting own coins. Dwarves, who were proud about their blacksmithing skills, decided to mint more valuable and finer coins. This caused quite a competition between dwarves and Sagrians. Dwarves had experience of thousands of years, so they knew better ways to mint nicer and finer coins than sagrians. Soon competition about the value of currency started fading to a background for sagrians, because they yet ruled trading. Among sagrians the following phrase become very popular: "Dwarves can mint beautiful money in their holes, for it is we who understand its practical value." Dwarves have always been a little clammy to trade with other races. All dwarves have same currency units and money value. Also elves use same money with each other. Of course every mint has own mark, which they stamp to coins.

The concentration of economic power and ecological devastation have heralded the collapse of many civilizations and empires. At this time in history, humanity must choose between the health and well-being of our planet, humanity, and other lifeforms, or the further enrichment of the ruling elite. The choice is clear. The World Bank, International Monetary Fund, World Trade Organization, World Economic Forum, and "Trade Agreements," such as the Multilateral Agreement on Investments (MAI) blatantly favor the rich over all environmental and human rights concerns (see http://www.tradewatch.org/ ). Civil society is now engaged in a tremendous struggle against these deadly institutions which value money over life. Opposition to the M.A.I., World Bank, the W.T.O. has grown and had some dramatic victories, but the struggle continues.(

International Economics at Shippensburg University Currencies of the World Exchange Rate Regimes : If a currency is named, the country pegs its currency to the named currency, and the parity is shown in parenthesis. For example, "US-$ (2.7)" indicates that a currency is pegged to the U.S. dollar at a parity of 2.7 currency units per US-$. In some cases where there is a large discrepancy between official rates and black-market rates, the former are indicated as "of", and the latter are indicated as "bm". SDR=Special Drawing Right of the International Monetary Fund. A currency followed by "(lim.flex.)" indicates that the currency exhibits limited flexibility vis-à-vis the currency named in the regime column.
