THE CULTURE OF GARDENS AND PARKS Gardens have always mirrored man's attempts to shape nature according to his picture of an ideal world, to combine elements of dream and reality in the organization of space, to make use of the symbolism of decorative accessories. The middle-class Biedermeier culture was the successor of 18th century Enlightenment. Gardens were created almost exactly according to prescription: plant, cultivate, protect and adorn the garden, for use and for pleasure ( Art aratoire et du jardinage , Padua 1798). Botany held pride of place among the sciences, it was studied both by scholars and by ardent amateurs like Emperor Francis I (II), called the Blumenkaiser , and Archbishop Juraj Haulik of Zagreb. In 1838 King Friedrich August of Saxony travelled down the Adriatic, from Istria to Montenegro, as a botanist. J. J. Rousseau called botany the most popular field of natural science. Flowers on prints, bunches of flowers on portraits, flowers painted on china and glass, woven in carpets, inlaid in furniture, planted in pots, a glory of colour in the garden, a splendid contrast to green lawns, hundreds of varieties of roses, dahlias, geraniums, pelargoniums, chrysanthemums, a wealth of decorative shrubs and trees - this was the style of the Biedermeier house, more highly valued than the melancholy English garden which, besides, demanded tens and hundreds of acres of land. Bartol Felbinger, who laid out his own garden behind his house in Duga Street on the slopes falling to Medvešèak Stream, boasted of his new variety of pelargoniums created in the glasshouses of Vienna in the 1820s as the "

Business Attire GREETINGS AND COURTESIES People greet each other with a handshake in Croatia. A man waits for a woman to extend her hand first. The family name is preceded by Gospodine (Mr.), Gospodjo (Mrs.), or Gospodjice (Miss). Address professionals by their title, followed by their surname. The younger person greets first. First names are used only among friends and relatives, who may greet each other with an embrace and by lightly kissing each cheek. The most common greetings include: Dobra jutro (Good morning), Dobra dan (Good day), Dobra jutro (Good evening. Common ways to say hello are, Zdravo (Be healthy), or Bok (Hi). To say goodbye, say, Zbogom (With God), or Do videnja (Until we meet again). BUSINESS ETHIC AND FRAMEWORK Croats are optimistic, hospitable, and proud of their newly-won independence. Taking pride in their historical ties to the West, the country hopes to establish a democratic society with rights for all citizens. Croatia suffered much damage to its infrastructure and housing stock during war in the early 1990's. An outcome of this is a high cost of borrowing, a shortage of working capital, and a resulting failure to pay suppliers on time or at all. Therefore, foreign businessmen are advised to obtain a confirmed letter of credit as a basis to conduct business with a new local partner.
