FEDERAL PROBATION
We reviewed the files of area Glen Marley is the Chief U. S. Probation officer for a major metropolitan district in the Midwest. His responsibilities include both pre- and post-trial services. According to Glen, "You have to be able to, and want to, work with people. Obviously, many of those I work with are hard to like. However it is necessary to get to know each person individually so that the courts can make the right determination about their case and their lives. Ultimately you want the person in your care to become a contributor, rather than a detriment to society." Glen's educational history presents a rather clearcut model for students interested a career in probation. In 1968 he completed a bachelor's degree with majors in sociology and psychology and a minor in geology. Of special significance during these undergraduate years, according to Glen, was the opportunity to intern. "As an intern I took positions is youth camps, city jails, and child and family services. These were important times in my development because it made the abstract real. The classroom concepts came alive and I could see the connections between the concepts and the realities of people's lives. It was also during these experiences that I became especially interested in corrections." The only problem was that the state in which Glen then lived had a hiring freeze in his field by the time he had graduated. After four years of experience and a graduate degree Glen moved from county probation to federal probation. In 1972 the federal justice system developed a new district in probation and Glen took a position as a caseworker. In 1985 he became Chief of the District. During the intervening time Glen redeveloped his justice system relationships, including judges, state's attorneys, and law enforcement officers, such as the local and state police, and the FBI. His personal network among such participants has been critical to his success. According to Glen, "I seldom have contested recommendations in court. There is an important level of trust between myself, the judge, prosecutors, and others involved. Without this you are left wondering just where you stand."

14-Dec-00, 08:09 PM (GMT) I am currently engaged to marry a Canadian. I have a British passport and will be residing and working in England until I can go to Canada permanently. Up until now I've been a permanent resident of Australia, and am moving to Britain to be closer to my fiancee. I have 2 convictions in Australia (1 in 1993 and 1 in 1998) for possession of marijuana. In both cases I was convicted and paid a fine only. My question is: in what order should I do my applications for PR in Canada? Should I apply for criminal rehabilitation first, even though it's not 5 years since my conviction? Can I apply for both the criminal rehabilitation and immigration under family class at the same time? Would it be better if my fiancee and I married rather than just being engaged? What would be the possibility of my being granted a visitors visa to Canada and then applying inland for immigration. I thank you very much for any assistance you may be able to give me as already we have been apart for 12 months and it's driving us both nuts.

Job-Hunting When You Have a Criminal Past
by Dona DeZube
Give me your name, birth date and an Internet connection, and in five minutes I'll know if you've been arrested, convicted or imprisoned in Florida. So will any employer who knows about the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's computer database and is willing to spend $15 for a criminal background check. There's not much left to personal privacy these days, and if there's something criminal in your past that you'd like to hide from a potential employer, don't get your hopes up too high. While there's no national database employers can check for felony convictions, plenty of states make residents' criminal background information available. What's more, an employer can check federal court records online using the PACER system, to see if you've been involved in civil or criminal court cases. Crime can even affect your employment when you're the victim. For instance, some states allow employers to dismiss domestic violence victims who are at-will employees, if they're thought to create a risk for coworkers.

Introduction The Criminal Justice Certificate Program (CJCP) is a specific sequence of courses and field work for students wanting to learn about the dynamics of America's criminal and juvenile justice systems. In consultation with a program advisor, CJCP students select courses from nine academic departments to gain a broad understanding of the philosophy, theories, and operation of the adult and juvenile justice systems. Classes may be chosen in any sequence but classes in Group I, II, and III are prerequisites to Group VII, Field Work. Courses are derived from the departments of Sociology, Political Science, Social Work, Psychology, Statistics, Counseling Psychology, Communication Arts, Women's Studies, and Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education. CJCP studies focus on the causes of crime and delinquency, examine fundamental concepts underlying the practice of justice, and analyze the impact of crime on our society. The inner workings of criminal justice agencies are reviewed and options for controlling crime are surveyed. Students are challenged to consider new ways of preventing and handling crime. Studies are completed in tandem with a chosen major. Upon completion of all requirements and graduation, students are awarded an inscribed Certificate in Criminal Justice for personal use.
