There are few places in the world with so rich and diverse an artistic and cultural history as Greece. In terms of archeology there are artifacts that are 200,000 years old, while architecturally Greece boasts Minoan and Dorian ruins dating back almost four millennia. Greece is also where drama originated, so there are plenty of ancient theatres to pick your way through Museums
Greece is bursting at the seams with museums. Almost every single city, town, village, historical site, settlement and hole in the hedge has an archeological museum which details the archeological and historical significance of its surroundings Historical Sites
There is certainly no shortage of these in Greece. Every city has their own specialties, like the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora in Athens, the Oracle at Delphi, the Palace of the Grand Masters in Rhodes Town, and so on. There are far too many to list here. It is suggested you get hold of a tourist map from the Greek Tourist Organization (EOT) which sets out all the ancient, Byzantine and medieval sites throughout the country. But some of the major historical sites you should make a special effort to see are listed below: The Acropolis, Athens

diverse culture of the Mediterranean. Curriculum areas may include biology, religion, philosophy or ecology. Initial Concordia faculty teaching CREDO on crete
http://www.cord.edu/dept/inted/crete/crete.html
A unique opportunity to actively explore the ideas that have shaped Western civilization awaits highly motivated students who may spend a spring semester studying on the Mediterranean island of Crete. CREDO in Crete is a capstone academic experience for high-ability students participating in Concordia's intellectually rigorous honors program. CREDO is distinguished by outstanding professors, stimulating discussions and the development of intellectual and social relationships.
This optional semester abroad has been specially designed for third-year CREDO students. Accompanied by two Concordia professors, students and faculty will live in a residential, off-season resort hotel in Crete and travel to important archaeologic sites in Greece and Egypt. Students may also travel independently over a 10-day spring break and have the option of joining an archaeologic dig in Israel at the conclusion of the semester. From January to early May, students will study the history, religion, and culture of Western civilization's birthplaces. They will visit places like Aristotle's lyceum in Athens, the sacred Greek sanctuary at Delphi, the fabled Minoan ruins at Knossos, and the early Christian community of Ephesus, Turkey. Based in Gouves, a small village east of Crete's capital and largest city, Iraklion, the program collaborates with professors from the University of Crete and the Institute for Islamic Studies in Istanbul. Students use the World Wide Web, Internet and e-mail to do research and keep in touch with friends and relatives.

A Brief History of the Island of Crete
As it Relates to Minoan Pottery
In the article series Minoan Pottery , you can read about the various stages of Minoan pottery, the styles, uses and sources of inspiration. Beginning with a brief history of the island of Crete will allow a better understanding of the culture known as Minoan...
Pre-Neolithic:
There is, to date, no written evidence that man arrived on the island of Crete before Neolithic times. Neolithic:
The peoples of the island at this time were seafarers, or semi-nomadic groups with their origins in Asia or North Africa. The were primitive peoples whose existence depended on hunting and fishing, with the people living in or near caves. They used tools of both stone and bone and they made simple clay pottery. Later migrants to the island introduced basic agriculture, the domestication of animals, the knowledge of how to build clay brick dwellings and the idea of decorating their simple pottery pieces. Sir Arthur Evans, the British archaeologist, characterized the Bronze Age culture of Crete as Minoan, after the legendary King Minos. From the material he excavated at Knossos, Evans devised a chronological scheme consisting of nine periods for Minoan civilization on Crete. His Early, Middle, and Late Minoan periods, each with three subdivisions, roughly followed the tripartite division of Egyptian history in the Old Middle , and New Kingdoms . Our knowledge of Early Minoan Crete comes primarily from burials and a number of excavated settlement sites. Artistic works of this period indicate that advances were made in gem engraving, stoneworking (especially vases), metalworking, and pottery. Terracotta bowls on high pedestals appeared and burnishing tools were used for decoration.
Around 1900 B.C., during the Middle Minoan period, Minoan civilization on Crete reached its apogee with the establishment of centers, called palaces, that concentrated political and economic power, as well as artistic activity, and may have served as centers for the redistribution of agricultural commodities. Major palaces were built at Knossos and Mallia in the northern part of Crete, at Phaistos in the south, and at Zakros in the east. These palaces are distinguished by their arrangement around a paved central court and sophisticated masonry. In general, there were no defensive walls, although a network of watchtowers punctuating key roads on the island has been identified. The walls and floors of the palaces were often painted and colorful frescoes depicted rituals or scenes of nature. There were sanitary facilities as well as provisions for adequate lighting and ventilation. Living quarters of the palaces, like the better Minoan houses, were spacious.

Palace of Knossos
The Palace of Knossos is a few kilometers south of Iraklion and easily accessable by bus or taxi, but should be seen as early as possible or in the off-season. The ruins are extensive and facinating and should be enjoyed at a time when you are not suffering from the heat or trampled by the crowds. Among the ruins, beautiful frescos and giant pithoi are the remains of the world's first flush toilet.
The Palace of Knossos receives about a million visitors a year, second only to the Acropolis, and like many of the monuments of ancient times, it is suffering from the onslaught of tourism. These gifts from ancient civilizations have stood the test of time but won't last forever. Value and respect what you see, for it is a real treasure.
Archaeology Magazine Describes Modern War in Crete
by Aurelia
The relationship in central Crete between the tourist industry and the "Ephors" or directors charged with preserving prehistoric Minoan sites such as Knossos, Mallia and Phaistos, is slowly cracking, along with the concrete used by Sir Arthur Evans to re-build the palaces. This struggle is vividly described in a recent issue of "Archaeology" and it is written in an engaging fashion by Spencer P.M. Harrington, the magazine's senior editor.
Mr. Harrington interviewed Alexandra Karetsou, Ephor of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in Central Crete. While she acknowledges how the discovery of the Minoan culture brought prosperity to Crete, she describes with great frustration the problems and erosion to the palaces caused by the tourist industry which brings 5,000 people from tour boats to Knossos during a single three-hour period. This is compounded by the pressures from developers and homeowners on Crete who believe they have the right to build whatever and wherever they want.

Minoan Palaces

What are they? A frequent expression encountered by the reader of Minoan Crete is that of the Minoan Palace. The term was first used by the British Archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans who excavated the site of Knossos in the beginning of the century, and is maintained ever since. The truth is that we know nothing about the form of government of Minoan Crete. There may have been a priest-king or priestess-queen or a board of priests. In the absence of written records, it is impossible to tell anything with certainty. Yet we are not helpless because archaeology can tell us something about the elusive Minoan society. What emerges from the study of the archaeological remains is that the palaces had two main functions: economic and religious. The former is evident because of the large number of cult equipment distributed in many rooms over a wide area of the palace. In addition, frescoes with religious representations abound in the palace of Knossos (the other palaces have yielded very little by way of pictorial frescoes).

    Cretans outside Crete
    a journey back in time
Nowaday Crete is being overwhelmed with foreigners. From places all over the world people come to visit Crete. Over history there was a movement the other way round: Cretans went to many other places and many stayed there. In some remote areas we still can find Cretan communities and some of them preserve the old Cretan culture and language. Other places are home to emigrants from Crete, due to its bad economical situation in the seventies of the last century. Let us explore Crete outside Crete!
