Without a doubt the most impressive aspect of Cretan art is the Minoan urns, statues, pottery, jewellery and frescoes unearthed at various locations around the island. These gems, along with the famous Phaestos Disc, a circular clay tablet of hieroglyphics measuring 16cm (6in) in diameter that remains undeciphered today, represent the pinnacle of the Minoan period. In addition to its own traditional art and music, Crete incorporates music and dance from all over Greece; one of these dances, the syrtos , is often depicted on Greek vases. In addition to Greek dancing, Cretans dance the pendozallis , a circular dance involving male dancers leaping to a fast beat. Other Cretan dances include the kastrinos , the maleviziotikos and the sousta . Music and musical instruments are basically the same as those seen in Greek music, and the rizitika or folk songs are one of the most popular forms of expression. Modern Cretans are the end result of countless invasions and meaningful encounters - with the Dorians, the Egyptians, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Venetians, the Turks - but there is a commonality that transcends all genealogies. Cretans tend to be thought of as SuperGreeks - proud, patriotic, feisty, hospitable and religious. Amazingly, they have managed to maintain a traditional way of life in the face of a seasonal invasion of tourists. Their state of almost-constant invasion (whether from hostile or benign forces) has give them a stoic character that often erupts into family vendettas that can go on for ever. The Minoan religion was an essentially polytheistic and matriarchal one and subsequently the average Cretan has an unusually strong attachment to the Virgin Mary; even men swear by her name.

    The People of Crete
    Rising From Minoan Civilization

Anthony Quinn as "Zorba the Greek" played up the playful and proud nature of Greece's people. Melina Mercouri, Greece's world-famous actress and cultural ambassador, likewise brought the passion and independence of the Greeks to the movies in "Never on Sunday." These two beloved actors skillfully endeared interntational audiences to the people who gave our world some of history's greatest philosophers, architects, artists and adventurers. The people of the island of Crete (Cretans) have their own, special lineage. The Minoan people , who settled largely in Crete, were traders, developing the most advanced navy that had ever been seen. All of this concentrated mercantile activity produced great wealth for the Cretans, which went into massive building projects, art, and technological development.
The Minoans during the Bronze Age
Prior to classical Greek culture, the civilization was named after King Minos, who in Greek mythology was said to be the King of Crete. Some believe that Minos either figuratively represents the civilization or is a dynastic name. Major cities of Minoan culture were Knossos Phaestos , and Mallia , built around 1900 BC. In Minoan times, the palaces were not only the royal residence but also served as the administrative and religious center for the entire district. The architecture of early Crete was quite advanced... represented in large, complex, and luxurious palaces. The Minoans used stone, plaster, and

The Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center is pleased to announce its forthcoming exhibition Crete: Portrait of a Changing Culture, Photography by Nancy Backas , which will open on October 12, 2001 with a special reception from 5:30-8:00 p.m. in the Hellenic Museum gallery. Crete: Portrait of a Changing Culture is a black and white photographic and oral narrative series produced during Nancy Backas' recent travels to the Greek Island of Crete. Backas, a native Illinois artist, began studying photography in college, and has seriously pursued this art form for the past six years. This interest, in addition to her twenty-years of experience as a writer, editor and researcher, have gracefully converged into this artistic undertaking. In this exhibition, Nancy Backas passionately explores the spirit of life on the Greek Island of Crete. She examines the ways in which the distant Minoan past is reflected in the simple life here. Yet, this is approached with an awareness of how, as a result of entry into the European Union, this way of life is changing and possibly vanishing. Her photographs, as well as her accompanying personal narratives, tell the story of this shifting culture.

Crete The relatively small island of Crete has given the world some pretty big potatoes, among them: Europe's first advanced civilisation; the mythical Minotaur and its labyrinth; King Minos himself (the semi-fictitious sacrificer of maidens and youths); the palace of Knossos; El Greco; an enduring linguistic mix-up between Cretans and cretins; the ultimate definition of 'family vendetta'; and a traditional costume of baggy pants tucked into high boots which the New Romantic movement foisted on an unsuspecting public back in the 1980s. Steeped in Homeric history and culture, scented by wild fennel and basil, and possessing stunning natural beauty and long, sandy beaches, Greece's largest island now plays host to a quarter of all visitors to Greece. Many come to spend time in the overdeveloped north, but it's still possible to find some peace by visiting the undeveloped west and south coasts or the ruggedly mountainous interior. Country: Greece
