Guiding the Gifted The Newsletter for Families with Gifted Children Kankakee School District #111 HIGHLIGHTS from October / November 2001 What You Need to Know Before Parent – Teacher Conferences T aking tests will be a part of your child's entire life. Tests are used not only in school, but also in the workplace. They can also be required for getting jobs, obtaining a driver’s license, or qualifying for a competitive event, hobby, or recreational activity. Tests are here to stay. As a parent, you have the right to know about the tests your child will take. And you can help your child by understanding what they attempt to measure and how test results are used. Your attitude about tests is also important. Your child will be more comfortable taking tests and possibly even do better on them if you help him or her to see tests not as barriers or problems, but as opportunities. Tests today may not be like the tests you took when you were in school. New forms of tests and other assessments are already in use. Even more changes will be continue in the years ahead. We want you to be involved in the testing process to help your child succeed at school. During your parent-teacher conference you should be given the results of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) taken in the Spring of 2001.

Mr. Greene's 8th Grade Social Studies classes are an opportunity for students to explore the "American Experience" from pre-history through to the present day. If you'd like to see how Social Studies fits into my overall curriculum, please refer to the curriculum guide In developing this course, I've focused on ten core questions students will be expected to answer at the end of their time with me. These questions are closely related to Washington's Essential Academic Learning Requirements for History. Unit 1: Geography In this unit (made up of two mini units on geography and exploration), students examine ways in which geography has molded and influenced who we are as a people. Our main focus in this unit is to examine how American geography has affected the development of our country: Students learn/review geographic concepts on a local, regional, national, global, and universal level by using the "5 Themes of Geography" (movement, place, location, region, and human/environment interaction). As a culminating mini-project/assessment, students demonstrate learning by creating a fictional island/region, one that will, according to the assignment, be conquered by alien forces from the planet Kelljan.

LET'S SHMOOZE
JEWISH UNITY
Dear Country Yossi,
It is with deep shock and great surprise that I read a recent announcement inviting Jews to participate in an educational forum calling itself The Institute of Adult Jewish Studies, whose faculty consists of Orthodox, Conservative and Reform rabbis. While Jewish unity is something we all hold very precious and dear, all our Torah leaders have strictly forbidden joining any forum in which non-Orthodox rabbis present their theological views, or even joining together with Reform and Conservative rabbis in any way that lends legitimacy to heretical opinions posing as authentic expressions of Judaism. Every Jew remains a Jew no matter how far he has strayed from traditional Judaism, and we always stand ready to help any Jew to learn more about our sacred heritage, no matter what his personal affiliations. But joining or working together with movements and rabbis who have falsified our Torah's precepts and have created new philosophies and laws that distort all that we hold sacred and dear, remains strictly forbidden, no matter how pure and noble the motive. For respected Orthodox rabbis in the Five Towns or anywhere else to lend recognition to clergymen who do not recognize the eternity of the Written and Oral Torah is tragic and heartbreaking. Is it not enough that the Reform and Conservative leadership is determined to shatter Torah observance in Israel? Dare we give them recognition in our own communities? A group of prominent local rabbis has recently issued a plea to the organizers and participants to cease and desist lending a hand to the terrible chillul Shem Shamayim. In the interest of peace and unity, let's hope all respond to their call.
