People's of China: Costumes of Chinese Ethnic Minorities
May-June 1997

The Hammond Museum wishes to thank the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China, particularly Mr. Yan Shixun and Ms. Pu Jubao, for their generosity in lending the costumes that make up the core of the exhibit. The additional loan of items from Theresa Reilly and Glenn Roberts collections gives historical perspective to the wealth of techniques used by the Manchu and Bai nationalities. We would also like to thank Amy Zhang, Robin Bolton, Kitty Truscott for their help.
Preface
Some people might argue that clothing is one of the fundamental elements in a person's life since its prime function is to protect the body against the elements of nature. Although clothing and accessories often relate to environment, the cultural, social, religious aspects, and age of a person all have important roles. In modern times, clothing has sometimes been regarded as an art form as well as a source of identification for ethnic groups.
Within China's fifty-five minority nationalities we have a palette of color, a range of clothing and jewelry techniques, and an array of symbolism. This exhibition at the Hammond Museum represents a small but distinctive portion of this diversity. In the remote region of Dali it is still possible to view the Bai peoples' partially for white clothing, their flowered baby carriers and the distinctions between an unmarried woman's headdress with its swinging white tassel and false braid versus the married woman's lack of a braid with a semi-transparent covering over her headdress.

Fantasy Dancer Costume and Poses
I'm sorry to report that DAZ3D no longer sells any of the VFDC items. Most of them have resurfaced at other sites, however. The costume itself, and the Dee's Den mappak, are available at RuntimeDNA , the last time I looked, and the Digiport poses are at BBay.com . RenaPD's textures I have not found yet, but they may turn up at PoserStyle , a paid membership site where she is a regular contributor. I have tried to update or disconnect the obsolete links, but you may find a few still remain. I've "collected" belly dancers elsewhere . (I've also written a tribute to the queen of the art, Zahirah .) So when I saw DAZ3D's Fantasy Dancer (Eric VanDycke) and the Digiport poses that go with it, I scraped together about $50 and treated myself to a prized new tool for my Poser kit. With the addition of two mappaks from Dee's Den and RPD Styling, you can create your own dance troupe with a total of seven costume color schemes and some variety of styles. I'm going to review this set in three pieces, beginning with the costume itself, then the mappaks , and finally the jewelled crown of the suite, the poses Eric Van Dycke's Victoria Fantasy Dancer Costume (VFDC) offers a beautiful, functional design, though it is aptly called a "Fantasy Dancer" costume rather than a belly dancer costume. As you would expect from a legendary morphologist, the pieces come with some excellent customization tools. For example

Belly Dance Costuming:
A Basic Beginner's Costume
by Shira
This article will introduce you to some basic elements used in belly dance costuming. You can make your own items, or purchase them from various vendors. If you are inclined to make your own costumes, see Belly Dance Costume Patterns elsewhere on this web site for information about three pattern companies who make patterns suitable for belly dancing costumes. Beginning students often aren't ready to commit a large amount of money to a fully beaded, sequinned outfit. This basic beginner's costume is suitable for wearing to class, "getting in the mood" to practice at home, or performing in student recitals, community events, and other amateur performances, but doesn't require huge amounts of fabric, time, or cash.
Overview
This costume design is not suitable for historical re-enactment venues, such as the Society For Creative Anachronism (SCA) and Renaissance Faires. Of the pieces shown here, only the pantaloons are likely candidates to be incorporated into such a costumethe midriff-baring blouse and sequinned hipband certainly are not! The basic elements shown here consist of: A Midriff-Baring Blouse B Stretch-Sequin Hip Belt C Pantaloons You can give this costume a folkloric (but not authentic) look by making it out of natural fibers. Accessorize it if you like with ethnic-looking jewelry and/or a coin belt worn over the hip scarf.

Ethnographic Museum, Belgrade.
In the wide variety of costumes, apart from the special traits of costumes which varied from village to village, there were also other differences between villagers and urban dwellers in terms of the way they dressed. Urban clothing in most of the Serbian ethnic territories developed under Turkish and oriental influences. Later, as in Pannonia and along the Adriatic, that influence was largely European. Urban costumes in the Balkan-Oriental style, made of expensive cloths and bearing gold and silver embroidery, were of high artisan craftsmanship. Up to the twentieth century, on the other hand, peasant dress was mostly the product of home and other village handwork. They were fashioned by women, though certain parts of the costumes were done by village artisans. Experience and tradition were passed from elder to younger, from generation to generation. The very first glance at the diversity of village dress reveals certain specificities in the combination of the functional, artistic and aesthetic characteristics of the clothes worn in an entire region. Identical or similar economic circumstances, brought on by the geographical setting, by historical, social and cultural development, all influenced the generation of certain elements of clothing in the framework of larger cultural and geographic regions, such as those in the Dinaric, Adriatic, central Balkan and Pannonian regions. In each region a basic type of dress is characteristic, appearing in many different costuming and decorative forms. The differences originated in the variety of materials for making and decorating which the particular region offered, the pattern-forms and decorative means, and the costuming tradition and level of cultural development.

http://home.freeuk.net/clancy/cdw1.html
THE DESIGN PROCESS: CHOICES
Strands in Contemporary Costume Design
Styles in costume design in whatever medium follow four distinct strands. Each is capable of a multitude of variations, but in the end most schemes fall into one of the following. Perhaps the most obvious is the Contemporary Look, this style of costuming aims to be as close to street or couture fashion as possible and, in film or pop promo, seeks to create vogues or interact with the cutting edge of fashion, similar to the way in which Hollywood once cultivated leading couturiers like Givenchy to design for stars such as Audrey Hepburn. Contemporary TV drama generally aims for broad viewer identification by buying middle-market clothing directly off the peg. This is especially true of Soaps, where an unselfconscious style in intended to echo back the everyday world. There are many projects where it would seem that nothing but the costumes of the era will do. The plays of Oscar Wilde and Chekhov come to mind, or those Restoration Comedies where the language is more period-specific than Shakespeare. Since other ages had different aesthetic values, unfamiliar ideals of beauty, and (to us) foreign ideas about what was sexy - properly thought-through period costumes can do this like nothing else. ILLU An approach that I find often works is to take the shape of the appropriate period style and strip it of all decoration. This presents the essence of the period in question through the use of pure shape, without the eye being distracted by any unnecessary detail. This treatment, whose results are often very elegant, works beautifully for the grander operas, as well as for many plays. Once the designer is freed from the constraints of direct copying, she can invent a simplified costume style, adding such garments as kaftans and flowing robes for an air of noble grandeur; or turbans and pinafores for a more homely look.
