In many countries the third generation is now coming to maturity, and it is this third generation that is now exploring the possibilities of the past. At the Archive it is this new generation that makes up the bulk of our public enquiries, requesting information and images of their family's village and traditional costume. Enquiries come from all over the world but it is the Australian situation that we are most familiar with. As a result of these hostilities, over half the rural population became refugees. Many more became refugees after the 1967 war. Costume and textile traditions have been vastly changed by these events. Very little remains from the decades of upheaval from the 1950s and 1960s. Traditional costume began to resurface in much plainer styles shortly after this period. Without access to locally woven goods or imported fabrics, costumes became less ornate, more practical. The distinction between special occasion and everyday wear was lost, and veils and elaborate headdresses became things of the past. shawal , designed originally for Western markets, amongst them. NATIVE DRESS, FASHION OR COSTUME?
When volunteering to work at a German-American event or an International fair, you may be told to "come in costume." Meant is usually the stereotypical Bavarian Dirndl for the gals and white shirt and Lederhosen for the guys. Dirndl dress and Lederhosen are folk-style clothes and as such are costumes; they are city folks' image of simple country life. It's something one puts on to be, for a little while, something one is not. Much to the amusement of visitors from German- speaking areas, our outfits vaguely resemble "Tracht" worn in the Alpine regions of Bavaria and Austria. Together with Oktoberfests, Germanfests, Strassenfests and wives/war brides, they were brought over by the GIs, stationed in Southern Germany. About the many and rich variations of earlier garment brought from other German-speaking regions little is known today. A "Tracht" is a traditional garment typical of a certain area. The word "Tracht" is related to the verb "tragen," "to wear." Before the leveling effect of urbanization, native dress was always bound to a given place, a specific social unit, and a local culture. This explains the great regional diversity. In his article " About Dialects and High German " (Spring 1996, Vol. 12, Issue 2) Eberhard Reichmann showed vastly different dialect and cultural areas from which German-speaking people came and still come. Each region not only has its own dialect, it also has its own set of customs and traditions, including dress.

Mardi Gras in Cloudcroft!
By Marian Schwenn
Mardi Gras, also known as Shrove Tuesday or Carnival, is the annual festival marking the final day before the Christian fast of Lent, a 40-day period of self-denial and abstinence from merrymaking. Mardi Gras is French for ÒFat TuesdayÓ and although Mardi Gras refers to a specific day, the term often includes a much longer period of celebrations leading up to Mardi Gras Day. The exact day for Mardi Gras is actually determined by the Gregorian calendar (set up by the Catholic Church) and varies from year to year, always falling between February 3rd and March 9th.
This year, Fat Tuesday falls on March 4th. The season is marked by spectacular parades featuring floats, pageants, elaborate costumes, masked balls, and dancing on the streets. Mardi Gras is synonymous with the celebrations held in New Orleans. As Carnival season approaches, residents of New Orleans decorate the city with streamers and flags in the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple for justice, green for faith, and gold for power. During the 18th century, many wealthy Louisiana families would leave their rural plantations to spend the winter months in New Orleans, where they held extravagant parties and masked balls.

Kunming Hosts China's First Ethnic Costume Expo
National Fair on the Ethnic Costume and Adornment held in Kunming An exposition showing more than 3, 000 unique and valuable costumes worn by various ethnic minority groups in China opened on July 2 in this capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province.
Among the items on display, there is a patched coat of fish skins, which is typical of the traditional costume of the Hezhe people, who live in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, and a Tibetan costume worth more than 800,000 yuan (about 97,000 U.S. dollars), which is some 300 or 400 years old.
The Exposition of Ethnic Clothing and Decorations, co-hosted by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Yunnan provincial government, is the first of its kind ever held in China, which is home to 56 nationalities. Vice-Premier Wu Bangguo attended the opening ceremony.

excerpt from Italians don the Kufiyyeh- The Jerusalem Times (Jerusalem) January 27,2002 Jerusalem - The development of youth fashion in Europe owes a 'thank you' to globalization despite the severe objection youngsters around the world exhibited to the trend, which allowed the Palestinian traditional men's headgear, the kufiyyeh, to travel north of the Mediterranean, becoming a resident feature of demonstrations. The kufiyyeh quickly claimed a spot in the world of fashion, appearing in the heart of the fashion hub-in Rome, Naples and Milano. Interestingly, western fashion adopted the kufiyyeh despite knowing the political innuendo it carries and is held in Europe as a sign of the Palestinian freedom fighter. The kufiyyeh even entered the intimate folds of the Italian society, becoming the choice present from a man to his lover. The kufiyyeh market sees heated competition among producers and importers in the Arab world producing more than 100 different "kinds" of the headwear piece and selling close to 30 million pieces annually. However, Italian youth know only two types: one in black and white, and the other in red and white. The former was until recently known as the "Arafati," after Palestinian President Yasser Arafat. Arab fashion for western heads One of the new trends that appeared in the past few years among Italian youth is wearing the kufiyyeh, which has come to express rejection and rebellion, both for rightists and leftists. In the past year the kufiyyeh became very trendy among youth, appearing in large numbers in recent student demonstrations against the call of the right-wing coalition government to change school curricula and make them similar to those taught in the US.
