GENERAL INFO PEOPLE WHY COSTA RICA? HISTORY History
The first European explorer to encounter Costa Rica, Christopher Columbus, came on September 18, 1502. He was making his fourth and final voyage to the New World. A crowd of local Carib Indians greeted his crew warmly as he was setting anchor off shore. Later, the Spaniard Gil Gonzalez Davila named the country Costa Rica, or Rich Coast, impressed by the golden bands that natives were wearing in their noses and ears.
Thousands of years before the arrival of Columbus, civilization existed in Costa Rica. Evidence of human occupation dates 10,000 years back. Perfectly spherical granite bolas (balls) found near the west coast are among the cultural mysteries left by the pre-Columbian inhabitants. Some are small as a baseball ranging in size to that of a Volkswagen bus. Parque Nacional Guayabo has ruins of an ancient city with aqueducts and some marvelously gold and jade work of about 1000 years ago was been found in the southwest. Evidence of the Olmec and Nahuatl Mexican civilizations´ influence are found in archeological sites in the central highlands and Guanacaste.
During the colonial period, Costa Rica was a tough and unpopular place to reside with few easily exploited resources and lack of labor force. The Spanish were much more interested in living in Perú or Mexico, where vast amounts of silver and gold were being obtained by hundred thousands of indigenous slaves. Thus, the first unfortunate settlers were left largely to their own means in this country. The first successful colonial city was established in 1562, when Juan Vásquez de Coronado founded Cartago -that became later the first capital city-.

COFFEE SECTION
History of Costa Rican Coffee
Coffee came to Costa Rica in the last decade of the eighteenth century. Its arrival on national scene was discrete, but definitive. Slowly and with perseverance that great works demand, coffe growing expanded over the high lands of the Central Valley. The brotherhood of coffee farmers, both large and small, formed the basis that allowed Costa Rica to become the first Central American country to establish coffee as an industry. It was in 1854, when a visionary group of local exporters undertook the complex task of exporting coffee directly to London. In this they were helped by the cooperation of William Le Lacheur Lyon, captain of the English ship "Monarch", who transported several one hundred our coffee into the "grain of gold" we know today.
The growing and commercialization of the coffee changed the face of that humble, one time colony that dozed lethargically in corner of the Empire. Our country was modernized. The young Costa Rican intellectuals could now continue their post secondary studies in England and come back as doctors, engineers and entrepreneurs, contributing to the improvement of the life style of all Costa Ricans.

The indigenous people lived in quite autonomous groups and were probably not more that 200,000 in total. Since the indigenous communities had very little power when the Spanish arrived, the Spanish settlers has had a great influence over the country's history. Directly related to this phenomenon is the fact that when the Spanish arrived, they brought with them many diseases that killed the few native people that existed.

history AND VISION OF THE costa ricaN CHILDREN’S MINISTRY Charlyn (Simpson Charlyngraduated from the Spanish Language Institute in San Jose, costa rica.
http://www.csmpublishing.org/Pages/crcmvision.htm
After attending fashion school and then studying education in college, Charlyn went on a short-term mission trip to Guatemala. The children of Central America won her heart and she began to believe that God was leading her toward working with disadvantaged children. After several more trips to Central America, she was convinced that she wanted to learn Spanish and better acquaint herself with the Latin culture.
Government restrictions and red tape slowed her progress and Charlyn was often frustrated by the slow pace at which the government moved. While she waited for papers and forms to be processed, she began working with widows and poor families. She became part of a team that regularly fed and ministered to 75-200 poor children every Saturday. God gave her faithful friends who also were called to work with children. She began to train them for the work and share her vision with them.
Finally, in January of 2000, Charlyn was approved by the Costa Rican Government to take in children. In May, 2000, Charlyn married Enrique Mejia, a faithful friend and godly man who has worked alongside Charlyn in the ministry. He has a deep burden for children as well and is a wonderful father to the children. Together, they now have nine children in her 3-bedroom condominium. They all arrived with just the clothes on their backs and holes in their shoes. They have filled up the house, making the need for a larger ;facility very necessary.

    HISTORY
Unlike many of their Central American neighbors, present-day Costa Ricans are largely of European rather than mestizo descent; Spain was the primary country of origin. Few of the native Indians survived European contact; the indigenous population today numbers about 29,000 or 1% of the population. Descendants of 19th century Jamaican immigrant workers constitute an English-speaking minority andat 3% of the populationnumber about 96,000. In 1502, on his fourth and last voyage to the New World, Christopher Columbus made the first European landfall in the area. Settlement of Costa Rica began in 1522. For nearly three centuries, Spain administered the region as part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala under a military Governor. The Spanish optimistically called the country "Rich Coast." Finding little gold or other valuable minerals in Costa Rica, however, the Spanish turned to agriculture. The small landowners' relative poverty, the lack of a large indigenous labor force, the population's ethnic and linguistic homogeneity, and Costa Rica's isolation from the Spanish colonial centers in Mexico and the Andes all contributed to the development of an autonomous and individualistic agrarian society. An egalitarian tradition also arose; this tradition survived the widened class distinctions brought on by the 19th century introduction of banana and coffee cultivation and consequent accumulations of wealth.

Quickly warming to the game after its introduction by English industrialists and railroad engineers in the waning years of the 19th century, Costa Rica failed to distinguish itself initially as a force on the Central American scene.
The modern game was first played in the capital of San Jose in the late 1880s, and the game quickly spread in all directions, engulfing the entire nation.
The natives took to the game with aplomb, and in the early years of the 20th century semi-organized football clubs began to spring up along the length and breadth of the Central American nation.
The initial fascination with the game was hinged upon open, attacking flair, with goals aplenty, and those honest, forthright roots still stick with the Tico sides of today.
Seven Costa Rican clubs came together in 1901, and again in 1912, in a vain attempt to consolidate a loose federation of clubs into a national league. The attempts failed on both occasions, but they inspired a sense of urgency and drive in an increasingly football-mad nation.

The shift from reliance on foreign archaeologists to a primary dependence on country nationals has largely been completed in Costa Rica. Various authors (cf. For example, Arias ( :4, translation F. Costa Rica Research Paper
When Columbus fist stepped foot on the shore of current day Puerto Lim˜n, he found a land that was inhabited by several poorly organized, autonomous tribes (the Corobic“s, Nahuatl, and the most numerous Chorotegas) (Baker, 2000). Although human inhabitation can be traced back at least 10,000 years, the highly civilized cultures of Mesoamerica and the Andes were not widely diffused in this area. The people of the region were already unique and separated from influence of their neighbors by the high mountains and swampy lowlands of the area. Since these cultures were not highly organized, they left behind a very sparse legacy of material culture, but there are interesting works of pottery and metalwork that have been excavated. Even before the imposition of western culture on the Americas, Costa Rica was made up of a unique population.
Presently Costa Rica remains quite distinct from its neighbors. The quality of life is the highest in Central America, and the absence of a standing army puts it on a diplomatic position reserved solely for itself in the Western hemisphere. As we have seen, this individuality did not come out of nowhere. There were several historic factors which have laid the foundation for such a distinctive political and social milieu. From Pre-Columbian times, through the colonial era, and through the emergence of a democratic nation, Costa Rica has followed its own lead and done things a little differently from the others.
