A Brief History of Costa Rica
Human habitation can be traced back more than 10,000 years but it appears Costa Rica was sparsely populated and a relative backwater in the pre-Columbian era. There is little sign of major communities and none of the impressive stone architecture that characterized the more advanced civilizations of Mesoamerica to the north and the Andes to the south. When Columbus arrived near Lim¢n on September 18, 1502 on his third and last voyage to the Americas, there were probably no more than 20,000 indigenous inhabitants They lived in several autonomous tribes, all with distinct cultures and customs. Costa Rica's only major archaeological site is at Guayabo, 30 miles east of San Jos‚, where an ancient city, dating back to 1000 B.C. and though to have contained 10,000 people at its peak, is currently being excavated. Many interesting gold, jade and pottery artefacts have been found throughout the region and are on display in several museums in San Jose. Central America gained independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. The news reached Costa Rica a month after the event. The question of whether Costa Rica should join newly independent Mexico or join a new confederation of Central American states resulted in a bitter quarrel between the leaders of San Jose and their counterparts in Cartago and Heredia. A brief civil war in 1823 was won by San Jose and Costa Rica joined the confederation. Juan Mora Fernandez was elected the country's first head of state in 1824. His progressive administration expanded public education and encouraged the cultivation of coffee with land grants for growers. This quickly led to the establishment of a new Costa Rican elite, the coffee barons, who quickly put their power to use by overthrowing the first Costa Rican president, Jos‚ Maria Castro. His successor, Juan Rafael Mora, is remembered as the man who mobilized a force of Costa Rican volunteers and defeated William Walker, ending the persistent North American adventurer's ambitions to turn Central America into a slave state and annex it to the United States.

Geography of Costa Rica T he country is divided by a backbone of volcanoes and mountains, an extension of the Andes-Sierra Madre chain which runs along the western side of the Americas. Costa Rica has four distinct cordilleras or mountain ranges Guanacaste and Tilaran in the north, Central and Talamanca in the south. Costa Rica is part of the Pacific "Rim of Fire" and has seven of the isthmus's 42 active volcanoes plus dozens of dormant or extinct cones. Earth tremors and small quakes shake the country from time to time. The last major quake hit on April 22, 1991. Centered on the Caribbean side southeast of San Jose, it measured 7.4 on the Richter scale. The country's highest point is Mt. Chirripo (3,797 meters). The capital, San Jose, and the neighboring major cities of Alajuela and Heredie lies in the middle of the Meseta Central (Central Valley). Almost two-thirds of the nation's population live in this small, fertile valley. The Pacific coastal plain is much narrower than its Caribbean counterpart. Both coasts are lined with white and black sand beaches.

Costa Rica Time and Date Costa Rica History Back to Top Human habitation of Costa Rica dates from at least 5000 bc, but in comparison with the great civilizations of pre-Columbian America the Native Americans of Costa Rica were neither numerous nor highly developed. When confronted by Spanish soldiers and missionaries, they resisted violently. Those who did not succumb to the epidemics that swept over the isthmus either died fighting or fled to remote areas. In 1502 Christopher Columbus' fourth Atlantic voyage brought him to the shores of Costa Rica, where he remained for 18 days refitting his ships. Relations with the natives became friendly enough that they brought him a number of items of gold, possibly prompting Columbus to name the land “Rich Coast,” although there is some dispute over the origin of the name. Other more promising regions forced Spain to neglect the area, however, and the few Spanish colonists clung to the coast for 60 years. In 1564 the Spanish crown established the Meseta Central village of Cartago as the first permanent settlement. the political jurisdiction of the captain general of Guatemala and the spiritual guidance of the bishop of León in Nicaragua, Costa Rica was ignored by both administrations. The absence of great mines meant the collection of few taxes from the Ticos, as Costa Ricans called themselves; consequently Spain provided little help in developing the infrastructure of the province.

History:
Under the rule of General Tomas Guardia between 1870 and 1882, Costa Rica developed many of its principal modern characteristics, notably the minimal role of the Catholic Church in secular matters and a relatively isolationist foreign policy. (The democratic elections of 1890 are acknowledged to have been the first in the region). Throughout the 20th century, Costa Rica has enjoyed peace and a steady growth in prosperity, with the notable exception of a civil war in 1948 which followed a disputed presidential election. After the victory of José Figueres Ferrer in the conflict, the army was abolished in a unique political decision which entrusted the defence of the country to a Civil Guard, and this decision was enshrined in a new constitution (which still prevails today). The country enjoys good relations with its neighbours: a minor outstanding territorial dispute with Nicaragua over navigation along the San Juan river (which serves as their mutual border) was settled in 2000.
In recent times, one of the most prominent political figures has been Oscar Arias Sanchez of the

A Little History
For many years, old friends Jeff Lantz and Stig Hanson from San Diego envisioned their own tourist and fishing lodge in some exotic location of the world.
"I dreamed of having my own lodge since I was a young boy" says Jeff. "I wanted the outdoor lifestyle. As I checked out other operations over the years, I always thought about how I would build and run my own place some day."
"I spent a lot of time in Mexico but started traveling to Costa Rica in 1989 and realized how unique it was. After several trips getting to know the country I became enchanted with the Osa Peninsula. It was quite spectacular in terms of raw nature and, to me, Costa Rica’s best kept secret."
Jeff and Stig spent the next 5 years building the Iguana Lodge in a rustic but very comfortable setting. Iguana Lodge is located just outside the town of Puerto Jimenez. The beach is all sand, stretches for miles and is virtually deserted. Great for swimming, beach combing, kayaking and surf fishing.

HISTORY OF THE POSTAL SERVICES
The link between the born of the postal services and the men history is given with the fact that man is a social being and in consecuence, he was creating through the ages a complete system to break the isolation of the first ages of the humanity and built a system that today, compose all the societies in a global vision, product of the globalization in the communications media and the technologic advance, like the satellite television. That which occurs now in Europe or Asia we can see and listen here in Costa Rica, almost at the moment. We must do a brief journey through the evolution of this concept of the communication between the human beings and that bring the born of the postal service. First was the talked message. The oral tradition begining at the early centuries of man and help as fundament to preserve the memory of an age in which the language beginning to articulate in the small human groups. Going to the writing, that become to formalize and to do less perishable the memory of the oral tradition, clay tablets, animal skins, stone tablets, were used to write the primigeny history. In Egypt, one of the most antique civilizations, the dynasties had a postal system, in which the Pharaoh and the powerful priestly class, sent their messages through the Empire. The greeks used the carrier pigeons to send the results of the Olympic games. Marco Polo told us how Genghis Kan sent his courier by horseman through Europe, and horseman must make a daily journey no less than 250 miles. At Middle Age there was a Postal Service between the Hanseatic League and the Paris, Upsala and Bologna Universities. The first public postal service was inaugurated in Cataluña and called "Troters".

Limon - History C hristopher Columbus and his crew were the first Europeans to lay eyes on the shores and forest-covered mountains of Costa Rica. On the great Admiral's fourth and final voyage to the Americas, in he anchored near what is now the port city and provincial capital of Limón. His brief dealings with the native people he met on the mainland were apparently good-natured, yet this benevolent interaction was not to be the norm during the centuries to come. Columbus landed in what is now Puerto Limon Costa Rica , on his fourth voyage to the New World. He named the area Costa Rica (Rich Coast). Some say because of the beauty he found there. Some say because he'd heard rumours of gold. Be that as is may, he was right in the first instance and wrong in the second. It was quickly discovered that there was comparatively little gold, but the natural beauty of Costa Rica has been attracting settlers ever since initial colonization.
Limon was settled by those relatively few Spanish immigrants who valued natural beauty and independence more than riches. Since the rugged mountainous land was not suitable for large plantations, Costa Rica developed into a country of independent family farmers. Even now they are the backbone of the country. This, more than anything else, explains the fact that from independence (1821) on, Costa Rica has been the most stable democratic country in Latin America.

A brief civil war in 1823 was won by San Jose and Costa Rica joined the confederation. Don Pepe died in 1990 a national hero , his deeds having set the scene for the social and economic progress that would earn Costa Rica the reputation as a peaceful and stable island of democracy in one of the world's most politically unstable, and often war-torn regions. When civil war broke out in neighbouring Nicaragua, Costa Rica was drawn reluctantly into the conflict, its northern zone being used as a base first for Sandinista and later for "contra" forces. In 1986, a young lawyer called Oscar Arias Sanchez was elected president on the platform of peace. Arias' tireless efforts to promote peace in the region were rewarded when the five Central American presidents signed his peace plan in Guatamala City in 1987, an achievement that earned him the Nobel Peace Prize. Of the tranquil play of sea, sky and forest, of furious thunderstorms before velvet nights of stars and fireflies. It is where life is lived to the moon's cycle; where grownups always have time for the children; where work is fishing or ranching, building or planting, and play is dancing and surfing, fiestas and football. And dozens of species coexist without endangering each other. When you were a kid, you wanted to live here. Mal Pais has been in your mind's eye forever. You thought you imagined it, but you didn't. You remembered it. It's real.
Mal Pais is a long thin village with houses, restaurants, and small hotels strung sparsely on three kilometers of gravel road parallel to the ocean. Immediately to the north is Santa Teresa. Cabo Blanco Nature Preserve is to the South.
