I don't make the rules; I just enforce them. W hat's wrong with the following statements? The Mexican state of Jalisco is 15 times larger than neighboring Colima. Covad's entry-level broadband service is four times faster than most modem connections. A killer who commits his crime in Baltimore County is 26 times more likely to receive the death penalty than one in neighboring Baltimore City. The problem is that "times [blank]er" and "times more," while very common (the above examples are from my newspaper, The Washington Post), make no sense. Although we may understand the intended meaning, such phrasing confuses addition with multiplication and, at least when taken literally, contains a built-in distortion. The bottom line: "Times" goes with "as [blank] as."

The Lot of Journalism's Noble Misfits C opy editors check written material, usually as the final step before it is set into type, to correct errors in grammar, spelling, usage and style (in this case, style refers to a given publication's guidelines for consistency in how words, phrases, typographical elements, etc., are to be used or not used). Copy editors are not proofreaders , although reading proofs is often part of the job description. The difference is that proofreaders (a job title that scarcely exists anymore) are charged with simply looking for typographical and mechanical errors on copy that has already been typeset. Proofreaders and, indeed, copy editors reading proofs are often criticized rather than praised for making picky changes at that stage in the process, whereas the same changes might well be applauded at the copy-editing stage. This is probably less true of copy editors in other fields, but newspaper copy editors are expected to be fully qualified journalists. Just as judges are lawyers, astronauts are pilots and FBI agents are cops, newspaper copy editors are reporters first. Many, probably most, of us have actual reporting experience, and those who don't are expected to at least have basic reporting skills. It used to be that copy editors were often burned-out (or even

“On Copy Editing” From The American Editor, February 2000 How papers can find and retain copy editors ACES survey quantifies industry shortage By HANK GLAMANN “Without support from upper management and encouragement from the rest of the newsroom, few journalists will find copy editing to be attractive.” That response to the question “How can the industry do a better job of building a better pool of copy editors?” is one of many gathered in a survey conducted to determine the extent of and the reasons for the shortage of copy editors at newspapers. The American Copy Editors Society wondered what papers were doing to address this problem, whether editors felt that the academic community should do more to feed the pipeline, and what the industry was doing to encourage people to enter the field. The study was administered by copy editor Carrie Camillo of the Star Tribune in Minneapolis. With the support of her paper and its editor, Tim McGuire, she produced a 33-page report that is the most comprehensive work available on the subject. This column is taken from Camillo’s report. ACES queried 242 newspapers, and 115 people responded. Fewer than a third (36) said that their copy desks were fully staffed, while 79 had openings, most of which (57) resulted from resignations. Other reasons included promotion of a staff member (30), increased need for staff because of pagination or other technology (21), addition to staff because of new editions or projects (20) and recovery from tighter budgets or downsizing (6).

Clip tips for copy editors By JOE GRIMM Detroit Free Press Recruiting and development editor Copy editors, you have a tough, tough time showing clips of your work. Just as a good editor's hand is invisible to readers and sometimes the writers it is tough to show your work in a quick, clean way to an editor. But we didn't say impossible. First, go back and make sure that the other parts of your application package are clean as a whistle. In some ways, editors apply higher standards to the resumes and cover letter of copy editors than to those of other journalists. Go back and check them over. Every word, every piece of punctuation, even every space should be correct. Follow AP style. While you won't be expected to know the style of the newspaper to which you are applying, straying outside of standard style rules will raise questions. Copy editors basically do two or three things. They edit, they write headlines and some do pagination or design. The latter two skills are easier to demonstrate than the first. If you've done some design work, especially if it would be part of your new job, enclose some pages. Note what work you did on the page, whether it was total layout, headlines and editing, or just the design. Headlines give you a real opportunity to show off, and most of the copy editing applicants I've seen don't do this. Enclose a sheet of your best headlines. Julie Topping, director of copy desk operations at the Charlotte Observer, says "copy chiefs like headlines the way city editors like leads."

Approximately 40 editors from the United States and Canada who attended an American Press Institute workshop for News Editors and Copy Desk Chiefs were asked to find synonyms from three copy editors at their papers, three reporters and three top editors. The results they sent me though terribly unscientific were interesting.
