Objective: Students will learn facts about various species of whales (humpback, gray, killer, etc.)
Objective Students will work in cooperative groups to practice sharing, listening and respecting each other.
Day One
1. Introduce theme by reading aloud the Big Book "As Big As a Whale" by Melvin Berger
(or any factual whale book).
2. Whole group Brainstorm facts learned from the read aloud. List the facts on a chart, or paper or overhead. Day Two 1. Brief review In small groups of 4-5, students will list at least 4 facts they recall from the read aloud. 2. Ask one volunteer from each group to come forward to pick a name from a "whale bag" - this becomes the team's group name as well as their research topic example - humpback, gray, etc. 3. Teacher supplies to each group a whale fact sheet and several informational books. *each member must research one of these facts to contribute to group project (cooperative structure). Day III 1. Explain group project. Each team will create an underwater ocean environment featuring their whale, including other fish, shells, seaweed, etc.

Appendix B: Reading Comprehension Strategies Research on reading has shown that comprehension is a process that can be taught directly. When a student has the opportunity to use a comprehension strategy repeatedly, he or she eventually will begin to use it automatically and independently. Reading research has also shown that comprehension can be enhanced by collaborative learning—small- and large-group dialogue in response to open-ended questions. In The Art of Teaching Reading , Calkins (2001) suggests that literary interpretation can be taught: “… The difference between experienced readers and the rest of us is that the experts have the strategies, the tools, and the inclination to extend and deepen their responses to a text….Teaching interpretation means teaching students a process that, for the rest of their lives, will yield big, thoughtful responses to texts” (pp. 477-478). In the “ Reading and Responding to Literature ” lessons in Voices from the Field, we use a recurring set of questions proposed by Calkins to strengthen interpretation and divergent thinking about a text, as well as selected comprehension strategies from reading research. These are summarized below. Strengthening Students’ Interpretation Skills:
Calkins (p. 478) notes that the first interpretation strategy good readers use is to ask themselves any one or two of the following questions:

SHELTERED LESSON PLAN Sheltered English is a technique used to teach second language students. This technique first teaches vocabulary and then teaches the lesson. By using a constant vocabulary and set of facts, second language students can learn grade level content area. Often they have already studied the area in their own language, so now they are learning new words for knowledge they already possess. A lesson begins with pictures and the learning of vocabulary. Remember to also use demonstrations a way to develop understanding. All learning is second language acquisition. To learn physics or calculus a student must know the vocabulary. Students, who have been to school, arrive with knowledge. Have them draw to show what their previous knowledge is. It is possible more than one lesson will be needed to learn the vocabulary. Spiral learning constantly reviews previous information then introduces new information then returns for review of already introduced information. Continue to repeat and add to the vocabulary. In presenting the lesson, have chosen the 5-8 basic facts you expect the student to learn. Provide guided practice with you or a helper giving support and encouragement.

"Building A Classroom Community and Bully-Free Zone" Estimated Time of Completion: Two to three classroom periods, or stretched out through out the school year. It is a topic that may need to be revisited from time to time and discussed on a weekly basis. I. Summary:
For grades 3-7. Almost all children, at some point in their childhood, will experience or be affected by bullying behaviors. For the safety and welfare of ALL children in a positive learning environment, it is essential for teachers to establish a learning community void of bullying behaviors and to facilitate a sense of community in the classroom. This includes teaching children skills to deal with bullies, as well as promoting positive social skills such as cooperation, communication, and conflict resolution. II. Objectives:
    • Students will be able to identify bullying behaviors and self-reflect on the topic of bullying.
    • Students will demonstrate they know when to involve an adult in a bullying situation.

Resource Activities Astronomy Sunspots Spotted I n this activity students will study sunspots and their motion. From data gathered, they will determine the significance of the sunspot data. The data will be used to calculate the rotational period of the sun. The students will then draw conclusions as to the sunspot's impact on the world. This activity will also include a historical study of astronomy. Electrostatics A Hair Raising Experience This activity is designed to help students understand the concept of charged particles and neutral materials. Students will work with conductors and insulators to produce, detect, and transfer charges. Electrostatics 2 A Positively NEGATIVE Experience Students will work in cooperative learning groups to discover how Gauss's Law applies to conductors and dielectric materials. Geology Geology 1 Topsy-turvy Maps Students will use the data analyzer and motion detector to collect data and measure distances. The graphing calculator will be used to show the profile of the simulated land features. They will create topographic maps drawn to scale of a given setup and relate the concepts to the creation of historical ocean maps. Geology 2 Dirty Investigation Given a set of minerals found with the skeleton of an ancient traveler, students will identify the minerals, plot their location on a map, and determine the trail the man walked. Finally the students will right a story about the adventures they think the man might have had. Suitable for 4th and 5th grade students.
