James Cook was born on October 27, 1728 in Marton, (near modern Middlesborough), Yorkshire, Britain. He commanded three voyages of discovery for Great Britain, and sailed around the world twice. Captain Cook's voyages lead to the establishment of colonies throughout the Pacific by several European countries. He is considered one of the world's greatest explorers. Cook was an apprentice to a shipping company at age 18, and joined the British Navy at 27 in 1755. In 1768, the Navy appointed him leader of a scientific expedition to Tahiti to observe a solar eclipse by Venus. James Cook James Cook was born in the Yorkshire village of Marton on October 27, 1728. His first experience at sea came at the age of 18 when he signed on as a deckhand aboard a Whitby collier carrying coal to London. He became an accomplished mathematician in his spare time and was actually offered a command of his own ship but refused and joined the Royal Navy as a seaman. His talents were soon recognized and after two years he became master of his own ship, the PEMBROKE , and was ordered to chart the waters of the St. Lawrence River in Canada. His work was masterful and the Admiralty recalled him to England and placed him in command of the ENDEAVOUR which was to take a number of scientists to the Pacific Ocean for observance of Venus. The ENDEAVOUR departed England in 1768 and after visiting Tahiti the following year he discovered New Zealand and claimed it for Great Britain. Sailing west, in 1770 he sighted the east coast of Australia. From here he sailed north and on August 22 he claimed the whole of eastern Australia as a British possession. The ENDEAVOUR returned to England in 1771 having added significantly to Britain's potential empire in the Pacific.

Cook was the son of a farm labourer. Later Cook and his family moved to Ayton where he attended school. His father's employer was impressed by his intelligence, he was the one who paid for Cook's schooling. In 1774 Cook went to work in a shop in Saithes but he was very unhappy. At the age of 17 he worked for a ship owner here he learned about boating and the sea. I n 1775 Cook joined the Royal Navy as a ordinary seaman and was sent to North America on the ship Eagle. He worked his way up the Navy and finally became commander of his own survey vessel. This was very extra ordinary because ordinary people didn't usually become ship commander in the British Navy.

Introduction by Guy Pocock James Cook was born on the 27th October 1728, of humble stock, in the little Yorkshire village of Marton. The cottage in which James was born has long since been demolished, and nothing now remains but vestiges of the pump. But his memory is kept green by a flourishing Captain Cook Memorial School founded in 1850. The Cooks soon moved to the village of Great Ayton, where they lived in a cottage that still stands by the stream, while James's father built a more commodious cottage to house his growing family. Of this cottage nothing remains - in England, though a small obelisk in an enclosed space marks the plot where it stood. It was taken down stone by stone and brick by brick and transported to Australia where it has been rebuilt in Melbourne public gardens - one of Australia's most cherished relics. At Ayton James attended Mr. Pullen's little school where he seems to have shown a flair for figures. He also owed much kindness to the people of the Manor. But it was soon time for him to earn his living; and his father apprenticed him to a Mr. Sanderson who kept a general stores at Staithes. (The name Sanderson occurs on tombstones in Ayton churchyard.) So James went off to the astonishing little harbour-town of Staithes which lies tucked in at the base of the cliffs and is reached by one precipitous road. There he worked all day in an atmosphere of haberdashery and groceries, slept under the counter at night, and in his scant free time listened to the tales of sailormen down by the tiny harbour, or outside the 'Cod and Lobster'.

Glossary of Exploration Terms James Cook: British Explorer James Cook (October 27, 1728 - February 14, 1779) was a British explorer and astronomer who went on many expeditions to the Pacific Ocean, the Antarctic, the Arctic, and around the world. Cook's first journey lasted from August 26,1768 to July 13, 1771, when he sailed to Tahiti on the Endeavor in order to observe Venus as it passed between the Earth and the Sun. He was also searching for a large, southern continent that was thought to exist (but does not). Many scientists accompanied him on the voyage, including the naturalist Sir Joseph Banks. During this expedition, he sailed from Dover, England, to Brazil, around Cape Horn (the southern tip of South America), and to Tahiti (April 11, 1769), where he stayed for months in order to observe the transit of Venus. He then sailed to and named the Society Islands (named to honor the Royal Society, the organization that sponsored the trip). Cook sailed to New Zealand on October 6,1769, where he and his crew fought with the Maori (the earliest inhabitants of New Zealand) and mapped much of the two major islands (the strait between these two islands is now named Cook Strait) and showing that is was not part of a larger southern continent.

The explorer Captain James Cook James Cook was born in Marton, England, in 1728. In his formative years, he worked for his father as a labourer on his farm, but it wasn’t long before the call of the sea enticed him away from dry land. By the age of eighteen he was discovering his sea legs aboard a coal transport ship, traditionally the type of boat that sailors used to learn their trade upon. bodyOffer(23456) In 1755 he enlisted as an Able Seaman aboard the ‘Eagle’, and such was his ability as a sailor that he was quickly promoted to Master’s Mate. In 1759, after being promoted once more to the rank of Master, James Cook set about charting the waters in and around Newfoundland, including the St. Lawrence River. He did this meticulously and unerringly for a period of eight years. To get an idea how accurate his charts were, consider that they were still being used in the early part of the twentieth century. It had been suggested that by measuring the transit of Venus (how long it took for Venus to pass over the sun, a rare occurrence), one could work out how far the earth was from the Sun. The aristocracy of England were eager to find this out, and so commissioned a voyage to the South Pacific to carry out this task. Captain James Cook was chosen to command the ‘Endeavour’, and he was also instructed to explore as much of the South Pacific along the way. He set off in 1768, discovering such places as Tahiti, New Zealand and Eastern Australia. Although the voyage was considered a success, the crew suffered a 43% fatality rate, mainly caused by disease. Cook took note of this and implemented a new diet, including as much fresh food as possible.
