Anyone who has visited our Fiji or Vanuatu We've chosen six quality resorts on the main island of Rarotonga (Raro to the locals) and one on the island of Aitutaki. There are day trips from Raro to Aitutaki but unless time is really short go for longer. If you don't stay at least a night or two on Aitutaki you will miss out on what we believe is one of the most beautiful, rare and magical places in the world - Aitutaki's spectacular lagoon. A great bonus with the Cook Islands over neighboring French Polynesia is the local currency, the New Zealand dollar, which has a most attractive exchange rate against the US dollar, UK pound or Australian Dollar. ... Geography History The islands were named in honour of Captain James Cook, who in 1733 became the first European to sight them. However, credit for the first discovery of these islands must go to the Polynesians who discovered them during their great migratory journeys of the 7th and 8th centuries. The main island, Rarotonga, was rediscovered by the Bounty Mutineers in 1789. In 1888 they became a British protectorate, and in 1901 became part of New Zealand. In 1965 the islands achieved self-government as a New Zealand Dependency. There are no plans and little pressure from anywhere for any change to this status.

The emigration of Cook Islanders to New Zealand in large numbers and resulting loss of skilled labor and government deficits are continuing problems.

The Cook Islands by Michael Sones "These people sail in those seas from Island to Island for several hundred Leagues, the Sun serving them for a compass by day and the Moon and Stars by night; all the stars of which they distinguished separately by name and they know in what part of the heavens they will appear in their horizons; they also know the time of their annual appearance and disappearing with more precision than will readily be believed by any European astronomers." From the Journals of Captain James Cook Polynesia is one of the three main divisions of Oceania in the east central Pacific Ocean. The Polynesians were both great sailors and great astronomers who navigated the great expanse of the Western Pacific Ocean with both daring and apparent ease. The word 'Polynesia' summons up images of tropical palms, beaches, rolling surf and physically beautiful people. It had an irresistible appeal to Gauguin who left homeland, family, and career to live in Tahiti.

Introduction
The Cook Islands is currently experiencing major economic changes and restructuring of the public service has resulted in large population movements both from the outer islands to the main island of Rarotonga and emigration to New Zealand and Australia. The four population groups which is the focus of this consultation can be identified in the Cook Islands as:
Women and Girls
Females represent just below 50% of the population (Census 1996) with young girls between 5-25 years making up at least half the number. This is distributed with more than half residing on Rarotonga. In the southern Group 2,800 and a smaller number of 1,318 in the Northern Group.
Persons belonging to Minorities
Article 27 of the International Convenant on Civil and Political Rights does not apply to the Cook Islands. There are no minorities that are not able to use their mother tongue. Minority groups such as Asians are two or three couples each and other European groups are small in number. Their influence and overall impact on Cook Islands society is limited. Their influence and sharing of their culture is seen as a positive aspect of their residence in the Cook Islands and to some extent encouraged. They have equal access in all aspects of society and education and for the most part are able to excel in the environment provided by the Cook Islands

There are three main groups in the Pacific - Melanesians, Micronesians and Polynesians.
The great migration to the uninhabited Pacific Islands started from South China about 30,000 years ago. Small bands of people with basic crafts crossed the seas to Indonesia and eventually colonized neighbouring Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Solomon Islands. Without navigation skills these Papuan people halted at the gateway to the vast Pacific Ocean. Subsequent migrations from around south-east Asia and Australia reached these islands and the people become collectively known as Melanesians.
Back in South China, new experiments had been made and the people had achieved the art of making a distinct pottery type called Lapita (it has fine white dots and other decorations around the tops and rim of the pots). A second great migration left with this new pottery and is known as the Lapita migration. These people brought with them more advanced techniques in farming and warfare. Their boats were larger and more stable and the navigators had greater skills to sail the open waters. This migration reached Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji about 1500BC. Some migrations progressed further east to find the still uninhabited islands of Samoa and Tonga.
The Melanesian people of PNG and Solomons followed this Lapita migration and are today dominant on Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji. Meanwhile, the Lapita migration reached Rotuma, Samoa and Tonga and about 200BC set out over the last stretches of open water to colonize Cook Island and eventually reaching Easter Island in the far east, Hawaii in the far north and finally, around 900AD, New Zealand in the far south and all islands in-between. The Polynesian triangle had been completed.

The Cook Island are located in the South Pacific, about 1875 miles (3015 km) north east of Auckland. The Cooks' nearest neighbours are Tahiti to the east and American Samoa to the west, each roughly 1500km (930 miles) away. The Cook Islands are spread across some 2 million square km ( 772,200 sq mi) of sea, an aera as large as Western Europe.
Aitutaki ranks behind Rarotonga in the visitor contest, and it lacks the sheer physical beauty of its larger neighbour, but it has charms all its own. For a start, it sits at one corner of a triangular lagoon dotted with lovely motu (small islands). And it's historically interesting, with a number of impressive marae (pre-European religious meeting grounds) that are open to visitors. Aitutaki also has one of the best 'island nights' dance and music performances in the Cooks.
