Composer Links March 31-April 07, 2003 The Handmaid's Tale Debuts in English The Handmaid's Tale has catalpulted Poul Ruders into the top ranks of contemporary composers. P oul Ruders’s highly-acclaimed opera The Handmaid’s Tale will have its English language premiere this week in an ENO production at the London Coliseum. Few debuts could be more timely. Based on Margaret Atwood's chilling novel, The Handmaid's Tale envisions a nightmarish future for the United States that would have been unthinkable say, three years ago, but no longer seems so far-fetched. Following a violent overthrow of the United States government by a religious dictatorship, women are denied the right to read, work, own property or enter into relationships other than first marriages. Those who defy the system are arrested, indoctrinated and assigned to childless families for the sole purpose of procreation. Offred, the title character, attempts to subvert this regime with disturbing and fateful results. Premiered in Copenhagen to sold out houses in 2000, Ruders’s opera is described as ‘fabulously inventive’, incorporating elements of a Bach chorale, medieval chanting and gospel music. The effect is both memorable and disturbing.

The Center for Contemporary Music For over thirty years, the Center for Contemporary Music has been at the forefront of developments emphasizing experimental methods in contemporary music and its allied arts and sciences. In 1966, the San Francisco Tape Music Center (founded in 1961) moved to Mills College and became the Mills Tape Music Center, and later, the Center for Contemporary Music (CCM). Since its inception , this organization has achieved a strong international reputation as one of the leading centers for innovation in music. CCM maintains a variety of electronic equipment, instruments and studios , provides instruction and technical assistance, and archives audio recordings. These are available for use by qualified graduate and undergraduate students, faculty and staff. WELCOME I started this website in November 1995 because I could find out very few Music Site mainly dedicated to "A.O.R. (Adult Oriented Rock)", for which European Music Lovers called as "Westcoast Music" in those days. And at that time, I had been aware that the music category called as "A.O.R." in Europe was a little different from so-called one here in Japan. In Europe, when people use this word "A.O.R.", it means that more hard-rock / melodic rock oriented music category, and on the other hand, the music so-called "Westcoast Music" in Europe is also a little different from our "A.O.R.". Due to preventing the confusion between the difference of definition of "A.O.R.", I decided to name my website as "Adult Contemporary Music In Japan". The word "Adult Contemporary Music" is generally understood that it includes not only "West Coast Pop Music" but also a part of "Black Contemporary" plus "Smooth Jazz/Fusion".
