Exploration and Conquest
Stone divinities in San Agustín, Huila Department
Courtesy Embassy of Colombia, Washington The group of Spaniards that first came to the New World consisted of conquistadors, administrators, and Roman Catholic clergy. The adventurous conquistadors were risk-taking entrepreneurs, financing their own expeditions in the expectation of being able to get rich quick. The administrators were appointed by and represented the crown in the colonies and sought to maintain the New World colonies as a source of wealth and prestige for the Spanish Empire. The clergy sought to save the souls of the native Indians, and in the process they acquired land and wealth for the church. The conquistadors, who felt they owed nothing to the crown, often came into conflict with the latter's attempts to centralize and strengthen its authority over the colonies. In what became present-day Colombia, the conquistadors explored and began to settle the coastal areas. The first explorers to round the coast of the Guajira Peninsula and enter Colombian territory were Alonso de Ojeda in 1499 and Rodrigo de Bastidas in 1500. In 1510 Ojeda founded Santa María la Antigua de Darién (present-day Acandí) on the western side of the Golfo de Urabá. Bastidas established Santa Marta in 1525 (see fig. 1

Introduction Task Process Evaluation ... Credits
Introduction Beginning with the Vikings in the 8th century, the Americas have been explored by many people. During the 1500's and 1600's European countries began exploring across the Atlantic Ocean. Christopher Columbus was one of the first explorers to attempt this great feat. His accomplishments sparked the interest of exploration in many other countries. Explorers have had various reasons for risking their lives when setting out across the world. Marco Polo was searching for new trade routes, David Livingstone traveled across Africa as a missionary, while others were motivated by the need to chart and map new areas. In this webquest, you will find out what drove the exploration for these significant explorers and how did the motives for explorations differ from country to country?
The Task You will work in your assigned group to search the Internet and use print materials to identify what drove the exploration of your explorers. During your search you will be looking for certain aspects of his exploration. Once you have obtained these aspects, you will be able to complete the following:

A Crossroads Resource Unit II: CONTACT: EUROPE AND AMERICA MEET: 1492-1673 Question/Problem 3: Assess the effects of contact on the Indians and Europeans between 1492 and 1673. CONTACT: EUROPE AND AMERICA MEET There were many benefits and many drawbacks to the contact between Indians and the Europeans between 1492 and 1673. Some of the positive and negative effects of contact for both the Indians and the Europeans will be highlighted in the following paragraphs. Some of the drawbacks of contact with the Europeans were disease, slavery, and looting of treasures and cities. Many European conquistadors wanted to get as much wealth as possible from the New World and convert the Indians to Christianity. Their methods were sometimes cruel and violent. One of the most daring and scheming conquistadors was Hernando Cortes. In 1519, he invaded the Aztecs of Mexico and took their Emperor, Montezuma prisoner. Cortes and his men took many Indian treasures and jewels. Steel weapons, gunpowder, guns, armor, as well as horses and vicious Spanish bloodhound dogs enabled the conquistadors to kill large numbers of Indians and seize their land and wealth. Explorers found much wealth in the New World. For instance, Spain became rich on the silver and gold taken from the Aztecs and Incas. Some precious metals were worked into jewelry. Other gold and silver was coined or shipped in bars or ingots. The Indians were often forced to work as slaves in order to mine the precious metals. Coins minted in the Americas stimulated commerce in Europe. Other European countries did not find the same great wealth in gold and silver that Spain had found.

Browse Powell's Military Books Conquistadors by Michael Wood "Staggering brutality, heroism and endurance, and immeasurable greed", is the stuff of this 16th-century saga of the cultured Aztecs and Incas in their tribulation with the barbarous Spanish, as told by Michael Wood. He affirms these adventures were "Less of a journey more of a miracle", and certainly the Conquistadors battling through unexplored forests, paddling uncharted rivers, succumbing to altitude and starvation, and perpetrating torture and murder in the search for El Dorado is supernormal if not supernatural. Not satisfied by early finds of gold, these acquisitive prototype guerrillas drove ever on in their determination and desire for more, always at the cost of lives, even including their own relatives. Complementary to the recent television series in which Michael Wood travelled the routes taken through South and Central America by Cortes, Francisco and Gonzalo Pizzaro, and Amazon journey of Orellana, his concise visualisation and description of the destructive schemes, actions and violence of the Conquistadors, the suffering of their bearers, the impact of smallpox and the breathtakingly beautiful terrain of the Peruvian landscape...
