We have already looked at the antecedent particle, o. Here are its forms, for reference: o base wa accusative oy attributive oo definitive ow adverbial w- before Vsuff The other particle is the embedding particle, i. Here are its forms: i base ya accusative ye attributive ii definitive yu adverbial y- before Vsuff This particle is used when a whole embedded sentence plays a part in another. In trisu ya, Carali layta foriswa - I want Carali to come tomorrow. In falon ya, Carali layta foriswa - I said that Carali would come tomorrow. Here, the entire embedded sentence `Carali layta foriswa' is the object of `trisu' or `falon'. Cawl ar antaa, i clasc - To become a member of the Anta is difficult. `Cawl ar antaa' is the subject of `clasc'. Den and lendwanva, yu shalia tanatwa mendel col - With nobody being at the Centre then, the admission couldn't take place that day. Here `Den and lendwanva' is acting as an adverbial in the main clause.

Subordinating Conjunctions More Grammar
German Subordinating Conjunctions S ince it is easier to recognize and use subordinate clauses if you know the German subordinating conjunctions , here they are. All of the subordinating conjunctions listed in this chart require the conjugated verb to go at the end of the clause they introduce. Another technique for learning them is to learn the ones that are NOT subordinating, since there are fewer of those. The coordinating conjunctions are: aber, denn, entweder/oder (either/or), weder/noch (neither/nor), and und. Some of the subordinating conjunctions can be confused with their second identity as prepositions ( ), but this is usually not a big problem. The word

Grammar and Style:
Review of Other Parts of Speech
Use the following readings and exercises to ensure that you can recognize adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, prepositional phrases, and conjunctions. As mentioned in the nouns-pronouns-verbs study guide, it's tricky learning to recognize parts of speech because you have to understand the functions that words play in a sentence—which means understanding the parts of the sentence. However, it's also tricky learning the parts of the sentence because you have to understand parts of speech. The way out of this catch-22 is to study each part of speech and each part of the sentence briefly and cycle around through all of them several times. The functions ought to get clearer with each cycle you make. Readings shown in gray are optional; those in black are required.

Description
  • 'A Concise German Grammar meets the dual requirements of comprehensiveness and concision (requirements which in the case of some published grammars seems to be mustually exclusive).. I think it achieves these aims admirably and I believe it is likely to be more helpful to students than the standard reference work, 'Hammer', which first-and second-year undergraduates often find unwieldy and difficult.. The author presents succint, readable explanations of all the key areas of grammar.' -

An Evaluation of Microsoft Word 97’s Grammar Checker
Caroline Haist, Canadore College, North Bay, Ontario
INTRODUCTION As a college writing teacher, I wanted information on the performance of the new grammar checkers before making a similar recommendation to my students. I was not able to find any, however. References for word processors, such as Word for Windows 6 for Dummies by Dan Gookin, explain how to use grammar checkers but not how they perform. Dan’s only comment on performance is not even accurate. "WinWord’s grammar checker is a wonderful tool, and I hate it," writes Dan. He says that it does "a great job distinguishing between I and me neither and nor , and other similar stuff" (p. 86). In fact, when put to the test, Word 6’s Grammar Checker seldom distinguished between I and me neither and nor. What Dan hates about Grammar Checker has nothing to do with its performance or with grammar, for that matter: "It keeps telling me how far I have strayed from the boring style that the folks who gave the checker life think is the ‘one true path’ " (p. 86).
