Restrict Features Subscribe Unsubscribe The Internet is full of wonderful places and can create many positive experiences. Vast amounts of information is available at the click of a mouse. "Cyberspace", however, is part of "real life" and there is good reason to be cautious here. The same dangers that exist in "real life" exist on the Internet. We all learn what part of town is the "bad part of town" and avoid it if we want to. The same holds true with the Internet.
Just as we encounter good and bad people on the street, we will encounter good and bad people online. Adults usually exercise common sense, children need guidance and protection.
There are two schools of thought regarding the guidance and protection of our young people. One camp believes that the Internet should be regulated much the same way television is. The second camp views this as censorship and feels that there is a technology available to protect children without limiting the Internet for everyone.
The Internet is an exciting medium because it allows, and encourages, the exchange of ideas. Some of these ideas may be of an adult nature and not intended for children. Rather than eliminate these areas of the Internet they can be "blocked" from your computer using software.

4PM Tuesday; Student Services Bldg Our goal is to build the computers and install the software congruent with our (and the Center's) vision. By designing the lab here and maintaining contact with the Center, we hope to design a network which will build upon our skills learned from class thus far while learning more about troubleshooting and design along the way. We also hope to provide adequate documentation and perhaps physical training for Tier 1 troubleshooting and basic problems during the installation in order to help the transition to the lab run smoothly. One of our possible goals was to create a small database (on CD-ROM) for the children with saved works, WebPages, or tutorials, in order to help in learning and basic researching of particular subjects we feel would be harmonious with the Katherine Dunham Centers. Content
Participants explore the special challenges and global implications of designing educational computer environments for children. This tutorial begins with a multimedia introduction to past, present, and emerging technologies for children. The afternoon includes a hands-on design session in which elementary school children will join tutorial participants in designing and prototyping a new educational computer environment. Participants will gain a historical perspective on what has been done in this field as well as actual design experience.

Choosing Software for Children.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC The growing number of children who use computers in school or at home has spurred interest in software for children which challenges their abilities and extends their understanding. Teachers and parents are asking what software is "good" and where to find it. SOFTWARE USE A first step in choosing children's software is to consider its purpose. Is it intended to entertain or to teach? To provide art or music experiences? To develop writing skills or programming skills? A second step is to determine how well the program succeeds in its goals. In any case, the effectiveness of any software will be influenced by the age and experience of the child using it. SOFTWARE CHARACTERISTICS AND PROGRAM FEATURES Good quality children's software can often be recognized by the presence of certain characteristics or program features. The questions below suggest what to look for in programs for children.

Don Edwards Community Learning Center
TSCC's Don Edwards Computer Learning Academy (DECLA) serves low-income and immigrant adults and youth for whom opportunities to gain vital technology skills are scarce. The classes are taught in both English and Spanish. Childcare is provided. Graduates of the DECLA basic course receive a donated computer that has been refurbished by volunteers - the only chance for many to begin to bridge the "digital divide" for their families. For the children in these families, the computers become a vital tool for homework preparation and an array of valuable learning experiences. For the adults, computer skills and access make an equally profound and positive difference. Computers enable adults to pursue jobs, learning, resources, and even social connections with their children. Volunteer teachers and tutors are needed ; if you are technologically savvy and good with people, please call or e-mail us for more information on this exciting and fulfilling volunteer opportunity.
