That wasn't always the case, though. As a high school senior taking my first class in BASIC, I marveled at the freshmen who were effortlessly creating error-free and complex programs. I did not reach that level of comfort around computers until many years later, after being exposed to them a little in college and more in graduate school. Computers have come a long way since I took that first class in BASIC and, I guess, so have I. I was shocked and disappointed, when a college professor friend of mine told me about his students, juniors and seniors at a highly competitive university, who knew little about computers, and did not know how to retrieve an emailed file and operate a simple Windows based program. "How is that possible?" I asked. Hadn't computers been a standard part of their education hadn't they learned reading, writing, and computing?

Movies Beyond Computer Literacy David and Laurie Callihan There is quite a push these days to get kids computer literate. (Possibly the easiest task in home schooling! You do not need to work to get our kids to use the computer!) It is essential, of course, that our students can operate a keyboard, navigate the Internet, and run software. Yet basic understanding of computer hardware is also a great asset. Each one of our children were required to spend half an hour a day on typing software before they could "play" on the computer. They all learned proper keyboard skills before they were in fifth grade, saving them a lot of relearning later. Each child now types much faster than either of us - and we are pretty fast! In this new millenium people who understand computers will be most prepared. It is one thing to be able to run software and another to know why and how it works. In our home, our six computers take turns being dysfunctional. As annoying as it is, we have learned to appreciate the ability to troubleshoot and repair minor difficulties. We would highly recommend a course or two in computer theory and programming (we used the "For Dummies" books) to acquaint your student with the unseen aspects of the computer world.

Computer Literacy: It's a Two-Way Street by John Stenzel, English I'm an English teacher who's also a computer professional. Wearing these two hats brings some odd connections. It's student-conference time, and as my colleagues and I go over drafts explaining our comments and grades, it seems as if our students (and many faculty) want us to provide quick fixes for poor writing. We quickly tire of our students' same old questions: "What is it that you want?" "So what you're saying is..." "How do I fix this paper?" There comes a time when we're tempted to snap: "Well, write better! Defend a thesis, answer a question worth asking. Provide concrete evidence, and don't pretend that a half-hour of Web browsing constitutes sufficient Ôresearch.' Have the verbal agility to work and re-work your prose instead of standing pat with the first and final draft. Write clearly, so that your ideas emerge because of your writing, not in spite of your writing. Get it? That's what'll earn the better grade!" We refrain from glibly answering this way; nevertheless, too many people do tend to think of writing improvement as a fix-it job, somebody else's responsibility, another "just-in-time" task. "Take your paper to a tutor at the Learning Skills Center," they say, as if a once-over from anyone, even a professional editor, could magically transmute last-minute dross into A-grade gold.

Computer Literacy O ne of my former students recently relayed this story about trying to find a job. We'll call her Dawn. Dawn graduated several years ago. She had been a successful model, and employment had not been a problemuntil recently. When Dawn did start trying to find another type of job, she found in interview after interview that computer literacy (familiarity with a computer and major computer programs) was a prerequisite to employment. Since Dawn had been a bit computer phobic while in collegeour school didn't require computer literacy at that timeshe managed to get a degree without ever confronting a computer. Finally, after months of searching for a job, Dawn had to admit that sidestepping computer literacy hadn't been a good idea. She enrolled in a computer course at an adult vocational school. Ironically, although she had been computer phobic, she took to computers so much that after about a year she opened her own computer-based business. And, no, I'm not making this up! A round every corner in TV stations and production facilities today you'll see desktop and laptop computers. They are on the desk of the receptionist when you enter the building, on the desks of sales and continuity employees, on every desk in the TV newsroom, in editing bays, and even in production control rooms.

Literacy Computer literacy Students should be computer literate before they take part in courses which integrate advanced computing methods or which are entirely devoted to advanced computing in the humanities. In common parlance the term "computer literacy" often refers rather loosely to the basic skills that the use of a computer requires, i.e. the "ABCs of computing", without any particular thought given to the more advanced applications which concern us here. Experience at various European institutions suggests that the kind of familiarity with operating systems, wordprocessing and the Internet with which students should be equipped is sufficiently universal across the arts and sciences that it is best taught non-academically, by computing services. Although the demand for the instruction of some of these skills like for example wordprocessing and the Internet might decline in the future as the percentage of technically adept students reaching university increases, computing centres should continue even then to teach skills which are normally not aquired, like for example the handling of operating systems, but which are needed for problem solving even with windows-types machines. Although mere "computer literacy" is really not our concern, we may need in practice to accommodate its lack until that has disappeared. The same applies to varying degrees to other fundamental computing methods, such as numerical and graphical analytic tools, as in spreadsheets, to database management software and to programming.
