Edward R. Tufte
Computer Literacy Bookshops Interview, 1994-1997
Prof. Tufte has long been one of our store's favorite authors, a writer whose intellect and books receive unanimous raves from those familiar with them. In one of the more unusual honors given him, The Utne Reader featured Tufte in a 1995 article '100 Visionaries Who Could Change Your Life', listing him with leading figures from politics, the media, and other walks of life. I've twice had the privilege of interviewing Tufte. The first time was in 1994, over sushi and sake, after a talk at our San Jose store in which he passed around his personal copy of an original Galileo manuscript. The second time was in January 1997, when his long-awaited third book came out (reviewed in this issue). I've meshed both interviews together for smoother 'flow'. - Dan Doernberg CLB: You speak of your work as "Information Design"... please tell us about that field. Tufte: The wonder of Information Design is that I can write a book in 1990 and the main intellectual hero is Galileo. What other field can make that statement?! That's the joy and wonder, a kind of miracle, of this field. There are all these things that are extraordinary in terms of content, and they are extraordinary in terms of their visual quality. Some of them are as beautiful as any painting, and they also happen to be about real things. Nobody had really seen that before. Both the incredible aesthetic, and the fact that the underlying frame is content-based.

Computer literacy for librarians
This is a pre-edited edited copy for Eric Lease Morgan, "Computer literacy for librarians" Computers In Libraries . 18(1):39-40, January 1998. The tools of the trade are your brain, your peers, and your computer. When it comes to your brain you have to know how to think. Think creatively. Think systematically. When it comes to the second tool, "No man in an island" and "two heads are better than one" speak for themselves. Computers provide the most powerful means for implementing the ideas created by the interaction of Tool #1 and Tool #2. Librarianship requires the mastering of all three tools in order to do quality work. You expect a surgeon to be a master at using a scalple. You wouldn't hire a carpenter who didn't know how to expertly use a hammer. In today's world, why would anybody trust a librarian, whose profession is about information and knowledge, who didn't know how to master a computer?
What does it mean to be computer literate?

1: Getting Serious About Series
by Kirby Urner

One hallmark of the Oregon Curriculum Network approach is its focus on spatial geometry. For example, in this essay, I emphasize the following math facts:
  • various number series correspond to specific sphere packing arrangements a square number is the sum of two consecutive triangular numbers the sum of consecutive icosahedral shell numbers is a cuboctahedral number triangular square , and tetrahedral numbers show up in Pascal's Triangle Pascal's Triangle connects to the golden ratio phi ) via the Fibonacci numbers the golden rectangle is embedded in the icosahedron
Given this geometric focus, students will naturally want to do some modeling. Hands-on projects will of course require supplies of various kinds: When it comes to computer graphics, we also need to supply some hardware and software tools. One promising approach (the one used in this essay) is to harness the combined power of:
  • Python , a free, cross-platform computer language with development environment Povray , a free, cross-platform ray tracing package, plus scripting language HTML , a cross-platform markup language for making text and graphics browsable
Python is not confined to performing in a graphics-related role in this curriculum, but serves as a general purpose workhorse. Python notation provides an alternative, human-readable syntax for various core algorithms (some going back hundreds or even thousands of years), thereby capturing the whole idea of "rules" and "rule following" (using Wittgenstein's terminology) with the computer (

But Mitra's passion is computer-based education, specifically for India's poor. He believes that children, even terribly poor kids with little education, can quickly teach themselves the rudiments of computer literacy. The key, he contends, is for teachers and other adults to give them free rein, so their natural curiosity takes over and they teach themselves. He calls the concept "minimally invasive education."

COMP 1200, University of Memphis
Note to viewers: This web page is no longer an official part of the course. However, I knew a lot of people on the net liked it and used it, so I've kept it online. Please be aware that some of the information may be out of date; I haven't updated these notes since January 1997. I'm in the process of putting together a new site which will probably be named paulryburn.com; it will be up in Decmeber.
COMP 1200 Computer Literacy is a required course for many majors at the University of Memphis. No prior computer knowledge is required to enroll in the course. By the end of the semester, students will be familiar with both the hardware and software components of computer systems; they will also have an appreciation for the ways computers and society have changed each other.
This web page is an attempt by instructor Paul Ryburn to supplement the textbook and lab material. Hopefully it will aid COMP 1200 students; however, these notes cannot possibly duplicate the demonstrations and discussions that occur in the classroom. Students should not use this web site as a substitute for attending class. If you are browsing these pages from outside the University of Memphis, welcome! Although it is impossible to put all components of the course online, I have tried to arrange the Web pages so that anyone can learn quite a bit from them, whether taking COMP 1200 or not. If you're a prospective college student, why not take a look at the

Computer Literacy Bridging the digital divide. Despite remarkable technological advances in some quarters and the resultant wealth and other opportunities this affords, the gap between the Internet haves and have-nots tends to be more of a chasm than a mere gap. More than 80% of people in the world have never ever heard a dial tone, let alone surfed the Web. The following FCF projects are working to change that. Click on photos below for further details
