He has worked as a sideman and leader throughout the U.S. and Japan backing up some of the top names in the business, Bob Hope, Andy Williams, Natalie Cole, the Temptations, and Boy Katindig just to name a few. But that is only one aspect of his musicianship. He started in music young, playing the clarinet then switching to bass in high school, went back to playing woodwinds in college, and then picking up keyboards along the way. He honed his craft in colleges such as Leeward Community College near his hometown of Waipahu, Hawaii and Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey, California, and at dedicated establishments of musical learning such as the Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. The Berklee School of Music was where Aaron decided to reach out even more and really learn from the best teachers available, Joe Viola for saxophone, Greg Hopkins, Phil Wilson and Andy Jaffe for arranging and composition. Evidently, he learned his lessons well because the people at Berklee to nominated him to the Dean's List in 1980. As a side note, after Berklee, he even found the time to study piano tuning at the San Francisco School of Piano Tuning and Repair while performing with his band, Eastbound, in the Bay Area of California.

Whether he is playing solo over one of his own mainstream jazz tunes, or "taking it out" with a reinterpretation of a 20th century classical composition, his music remains ever accessible, intelligent and audience friendly. home bios sounds gigs ... contact Steve Swell Born in Newark, New Jersey, Steve Swell has been living, working and performing in New York City for most of his adult life. In an effort to find his own voice on his instrument and to learn to write and arrange in a style of his own, he has sought out, performed and recorded with many of the finest composers and improvisers in the city. He has recorded and toured with such diverse jazz personalities as mainstreamers Lionel Hampton and Buddy Rich, to so-called outsiders like Anthony Braxton and Jemeel Moondoc. Swell has four recordings as a leader and is a featured artist on more than thirty-five other releases. Swell first came to public attention performing with Makanda Ken McIntyre in the multi-instrumentalist's concert at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1985 of which Herb Boyd of The Amsterdam News wrote, "Swell possesses a forceful, but mature sound...with a vibrant syncopation..." Later, Swell came to international attention while touring in Europe and recording with alto saxophonist Tim Berne and his group "Caos Totale." There are two studio recordings of this band on the JMT label. During this time Steve also toured and recorded with Joey Baron's "Barondown" which has three releases; one for JMT, one on New World and the most recent for the Avant label. Even though he is strongly identified with the "downtown scene", Swell has been developing his style in the more so-called "traditional avant-garde" arena. Co-leading such projects as "Space, Time, Swing" with Perry Robinson, being a sideman in William Parker's "Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra" and working with other similar people has kept him on this circuit. Dave McElfresh of Jazz Now wrote in a review of drummer Lou Grassi's CD, PoGressions, " Swell's powerful trombone zooms in and out of the music like a plane diving at a target. Players like himself - and music like this - are to be thanked for the revival of interest in the instrument."

Béla Bartók , (1881-1945) was renowned as a composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist. Bartok’s music was heavily influenced by the folk music of his native Hungary, which he collected and transcribed. Contrasts (1938) was commissioned by jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman and is dedicated to Goodman and Bartók’s countryman violinist, Josef Szigeti. Elaine Bearer has often been called a "Renaissance Woman" because of her diverse interests and accomplishments. She is internationally recognized as both a composer of serious music and as a scientist. She studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and has a Bachelor of Music from The Manhattan School of Music and Master of Music from NYU. She also holds a MD-PhD and is a licensed board-certified physician. At Brown, she is an Associate Professor in both Pathology and in Music. Bearer has had three premiers of new musical compositions, in addition to this one, in the last four months. Although these musicians were regularly performing in small ensembles, most felt restricted by the pressures of commercial nightclub performance and wanted to explore composition and improvisation possibilities in a large-group format.
