This exercise was created for the GeographyWeb project at the University of Colorado. Welcome to The Flood Hazards of Manitou Springs, CO. The scenic Rocky Mountain setting and quaint shop-lined streets of Manitou Springs attract many tourists each year. However, this seemingly idyllic environment poses serious risks for residents and visitors alike. When conditions are right, Fountain Creek, a major stream that flows directly through the town, may flood without warning. This Web-based learning exercise examines the human-environment relationships of Manitou Springs, Colorado. You can learn about the settlement history and natural hazards of Manitou Springs, understand what may happen to Manitou Springs during and after a catastrophic flood event, and identify areas of the town that are at risk. Although the ideal way to learn about Manitou Springs would be to visit the town itself, this is not a feasible option for everyone. Fortunately, this Web site can take you on a "virtual" exploration of Manitou Springs and familiarize you with many of its geographic features.

37. SDSS For Location Planning, Or The Seat Of The Pants Is Out

SDSS for Location Planning, or The Seat of the Pants is Out
by Larry Daniel
Manager of GIS Development
MPSI, Inc.
(Published in GeoInfo Systems December 1992) In the GeoInfo Systems May '92 issue, Donald Cooke described the general characteristics of a spatial decision support system (SDSS). This article reviews those concepts and extends the discussion by examining SDSS as it has historically applied to site analysis.
Reviewing SDSS
As described by Donald Cooke in the May '92 issue of GeoInfo Systems, a spatial decision support system (SDSS) is 'canned software that is intuitively obvious to use, solves problems efficiently and delivers immediate results'. SDSS is off-the-shelf software for carefully selected functions, i.e. bug-free point-and-shoot capabilities on very specific spatially-oriented needs. SDSSs don't require in-depth commands to operate, yet allow users to negotiate very sophisticated geographic analysis. Many of the distinctions between GIS and SDSS are derived from the differences in their target audiences. While GIS sites often employ technical analysts to plow through the nitty-gritty of setting up databases and defining complex functions, SDSS sites generally have but one or two business analysts who want to make spatial decisions but don't want to become immersed in the intricacies of GIS. The SDSS users don't seek a smorgasbord of commands, they want a select handful of intuitive operations to yield quick and effective answers. They want to avoid technically complex operations and while they're impressed by GIS' potential, what they really want is three or four buttons and an answer.

Text (required):
Mountain geography presents a geographic overview of major mountain ranges in the world, and provides an introduction to the physical, biological, and anthropological processes that shape these mountain environments. Changes in the mountain environment caused by humans will be evaluated and land use strategies to minimize these human impacts will be discussed. There are no prerequisites for Mountain Geography. Students should take this course who are interested in the geologic origin of mountains, the erosional processes that shape mountains, vegetation and animal life in mountains, and resource problems and mitigation efforts in mountainous areas. My intent with this course is to provide incentives for you to pursue more detailed classes in physical and human geography, biology, geology and anthropology.
GRADING
Midterm There will be three midterms, each worth 30% of your grade. The lowest of the three midterms will be dropped.
