about twentyfour objects that represent american art from colonial times to the lessonplans which serve to enhance the 5th-grade american history curriculum.
    http://www.thinker.org/fam/education/publications/guide-american/
This teachers' guide includes a variety of materials designed to help you prepare your class for a visit to the collection of American art at the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. Thanks to funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and The San Francisco Foundation, we are pleased to offer you information about twenty-four objects that represent American art from colonial times to the Civil War period. The descriptive information about the artworks is accompanied by lesson plans which serve to enhance the 5th-grade American history curriculum. This selection of objects was assembled to reflect the high quality of the works of art in the de Young collection. The degree of interest to 5th-grade students was also strongly considered in choosing pieces for this teachers' guide. Clearly, the works of art do not represent the full range of artists who were women, indigenous people, or people of non-European backgrounds who lived in America from the 1670s to the 1880s. The de Young Museum is committed to broadening its collection, and as the American art collection expands to represent a more diverse group of artists, we will make additions to this publication. The activities and research projects suggested in this guide give a more inclusive and complete picture of America during this time. We hope that you enjoy the adventure and challenge of making America's history and culture come alive for your students.

... Native American Quilts Return to America's Quilting History FEATURING Colonial Women It is so easy for us to idealize the life of early settlers in the American colonies but in truth it was a hard and unforgiving life. Their homes were no more than roughly built structures that gave just a little protection from the elements. Food was scarce and their diets were poor. Sickness was always at their doors and often entered uninvited. During America's beginnings the Puritan religion had a major influence. This religion was extremely restrictive to everyone and especially for women. Ministers often reminded their flock that women were inferior to men and more inclined to sin and error. Although some women were taught to read it was only so that they could read the bible. Few learned to write as writing was thought to be the prerogative of men. A woman was expected to be subservient to her father until she married and then to her husband. Even after colonial settlers became established in America an ordinary woman's daily life was still difficult. Typically she would be expected to spin, sew, preserve food, cook and clean while caring for her often-large family. Obviously the image of a colonial woman sitting in her cabin quilting before the fire is far from the truth. There were, of course, exceptions. Some quilting was done by those who could afford household help thus leaving the woman of the house with time for decorative needlework. These women used quilting methods from their mother countries, styles of quilting far different than what we think of today as patchwork.

March 27, 2000 Media only: Melinda Machado (202) 357-3129 National Association of Realtors Sponsors Smithsonian Exhibition Centered on 300-year-old American Home The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History today announced a sponsorship in the amount of $2.4 million from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) in support of a new exhibition centered around a two-and-a-half story house that stood in Ipswich, Mass., for nearly 300 years. Built around 1700, just 30 miles north of Boston, the house stood from colonial days through the early 1960s when it was saved from demolition by an Ipswich citizen and then brought to the Smithsonian Institution. The marketing sponsorship—a first for the museum—provides an opportunity for the NAR and the museum to link their Web sites and allow NAR to use a logo especially designed for the project by the museum. In November 1999, NAR’s board of directors overwhelmingly voted for the sponsorship. The exhibition will open in May 2001, coinciding with the Realtor Association’s Midyear Governance Meeting in Washington, D.C. "Now Realtors in every nook and cranny of the country will become shareholders in a remarkable American story," NAR President Dennis R. Cronk said. "This sponsorship speaks to NAR’s commitment to homeownership and the American dream."

LAURA BUSH PRESENTS INAUGURAL BALL GOWN
    TO THE SMITHSONIAN
Mrs. Laura Bush will formally present the gown she wore to the 2001 Inaugural balls to the Smithsonian Institution’s First Ladies Collection on Sunday, Jan. 20, at the National Museum of American History. Following the presentation ceremony, the gown will be displayed in the museum’s "The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden" exhibition. In addition, the matching coat, shoes, and bag will be on view. Inaugural Gown Click Image To Enlarge Made of red Chantilly lace and silk satin with crystal beading, the gown has long sleeves, a scoop neck and a full skirt. It was created by Dallas designer Michael Faircloth. Mrs. Bush’s gown will be shown with one worn to George Washington’s Inauguration in 1789. The brocaded, lavender silk gown and matching petticoat are believed to have been worn by Mary Livingston Duane, wife of the mayor of New York, to a ball in that city. "The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History is a national treasure chest filled with interesting information and artifacts that tell the story of our nation," said Mrs. Bush. "I am proud that my Inaugural gown will become part of the collection that honors the many great American women in our history."
