    MEMORANDUM
To: All Faculty From: Gary A. Kreps, Associate Provost for Academic Affairs Date: September 1, 1998 Subject: Proposals to Foundations or Corporations
While the faculty have been very successful in seeking external funding for their projects, they should be aware of the procedure for submitting proposals to agencies other than federal, state, and local governments (i.e., foundations or corporations). In some cases institutional endorsement is not required and a faculty member may submit the proposal as an individual. However, clearance is still needed for reasons specified in the attached informational sheet, "CLEARANCE PROCEDURES FOR FACULTY PROPOSALS TO CORPORATIONS AND PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS." I urge you to familiarize yourself with these procedures, and encourage you to use the services of the Office of Grants and Research Administration (1-4563) as a starting point for seeking external funding.
CLEARANCE PROCEDURES FOR FACULTY PROPOSALS TO CORPORATIONS AND PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS At the direction of the President and Provost, the Grants Office and the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations have established a clearance system for all approaches to corporations and private foundations. Multiple, blind approaches can oftentimes embarrass the College, and sometimes even lead to a loss in funding. This clearance system therefore helps the College develop and maintain excellent relationships with foundations and corporationsmaximizing support for William and Mary's faculty and programs.

Where to look when you need funding by Dawn Ventress Kight and Emma Bradford Perry In this technological age and on the eve of the new millennium, few libraries have the resources to purchase, maintain, and support all of the programs and technological services offered at libraries, especially with escalating costs and declining budgets. It has become necessary to identify creative ways to support expanded library services. Many libraries have sought external grants from local, state and government agencies, and from corporate and private foundations. Through a team approach, The John B. Cade Library at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has been successful in identifying and writing technology and distance learning grants that have been funded. A significant amount of information, which has facilitated the successful completion of the grant process, came from the various Web sites. This selected list of searchable databases, electronic publications, foundations, government agencies, and newsgroups should be of great interest to the beginner as well as the seasoned grant writer. These resources cover various aspects of funding and successful grantwriting. Interesting starter sites

If you are a student looking for information on financial aid, the very first thing you should do is speak to the financial aid office at the institution you plan to attend. (For a list of colleges and universities with financial aid offices on the World Wide Web, see FinAid's Financial Aid Offices Web Page ). Grants and loans are available from the federal government as well. Most colleges and universities will require you to apply for federal funding first before they consider you for scholarship support. We have selected a few of the most important print and electronic resources for you to begin your search beyond the institution you are attending. Because most private foundations make grants only to incorporated nonprofit organizations, individual grantseekers must follow a different funding path than organizations with tax-exempt status. Some private foundations currently offer scholarships and fellowships, and most have highly specific criteria. It is up to you to determine which funders might be interested in providing you with financial support. Our libraries maintain a limited collection of other publishers' scholarship materials, primarily those that list foundation-sponsored grants and awards. For access to a more complete collection of college guides and scholarship directories, as well as a good collection of career and vocational guidance materials, you should visit your local public library or your school's financial aid office.

    College Grants
There are such phenomena as college grants!
College grants do not come from just anywhere. In addition to being provided by the federal government, most college grants are funded by private organizations, associations and institutions. College grants can also be funded by non-profit organizations or by community foundations.
Grants in general do not have to necessarily be for college. In fact, most of the time, grants are funded for new programs, projects, equipment or to put new ideas into motion. They can also be used to fund a fellowship. However, college grants do exist. Just make sure that you are ready to put in the time and effort into writing a college grant proposal and putting forth your reasons why that particular college grant should be given to you.
In addition, by searching through our college grant database, you'll be able to locate thousands of college grants that may apply to you. Shoot for the college grant stars!

If you want to match your grant "vision" with potential funding sources, you rarely encounter a problem of finding enough information. The problem is really finding too much information you must wade through haystacks, before you can even think about needles. The Internet and the selected "Useful Links" in this Web page can make your search much easier. Web-surfing is a useful activity (especially for the novice grant-seeker) because you will eventually grow to understand the limitations and priorities of various funding sources. You may also discover by-ways that you or others may never have considered. In the best California tradition, you are prospecting for gold partially a matter of luck, but also an acquired skill. Initially, you will want to search through the broad categories included in our links:
