College Entrance Exams Do I really have to take a test to get into college? The answer is, in most cases, yes! You can get ready by taking the PSAT/NMSQT in 10th and 11th grade. The test will provide you with an indication of how you will do on the Sat and possibly qualify you for a national college scholarship. Toward the end of your junior year and in senior year the SAT I and/or ACT should be taken. The best time to take the SAT II (subject tests), if required, is as soon as you have completed the course. See your counselor for specifics regarding the college entrance and placement exams. College Entrance Exams Juniors should register for and take the ACT and/or SAT in the spring of their junior year. Registration materials will be given to juniors in their English classes, or they can be picked up any time in the WHS Student Services Center. Exams can be taken a number of times and the highest score will be accepted by the colleges. Many students take the exams over in their senior year. Students who feel that they have not achieved their highest score should consider taking the exam over again. Many scholarships are tied to test scores and a score increase of even one point on the ACT could mean winning a scholarship. Registration for the exams can be done on line as well as through the mail. Site addresses are: ACT www.act.org SAT www.collegeboard.org Mrs. Pettit is speaking to all Junior English classes in late January/early February to cover all aspects of college entrance exams. COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS
The SAT I Reasoning Test is required by most colleges. The test is offered in October, November, December, January, March, May and June. The SAT II Subject Tests fall into five general subject areas - English, History, Mathematics, Science, and Languages. The University of California requires three SAT II tests (Writing, Mathematics Level I or IC or IIC and one of the student’s choice). Some selective colleges require these tests as well. The tests are usually given on the same day as the SAT I. The cost is per test and a maximum of three tests may be taken in one day. The SAT I and the SAT II cannot be taken on the same day. The ACT is another entrance exam and is accepted by most colleges. The tests cover four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning. It is offered six times each year. SAT I, SAT II, and ACT Preparation Workshops are offered by individual school sites. Check with the high school's college counselor to obtain the dates of these workshops. These workshops are also provided by USC MESA on a need basis. To prepare for the SAT I Reasoning Test, students are encouraged to take the

COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS A.C.T.-American College Testing The American College Testing program began in 1959. In 1999, over 1 2 million students have taken the tes this year. It is accepted by 85% of all colleges/universities across the United States. The four tests administered in English, Reading, Mathematics and Science give students a composite or average score between 1 and 36. Each test is weighted equally. Average scores are between 17 and 23. All colleges/universities in Michigan accept the ACT as an entrance exam. The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor prefers that students achieve a composite score of 25 or above for acceptance in most programs, and it has the most rigorous admissions criteria in the State of Michigan. Most guidance counselors in Michigan recommend that students take the ACT towards the end of their Junior year in high school so they can take as much Math, Science and English as possible prior to submitting their 6 semester transcript to colleges/universities. Students may re-test as many times as they wish; 77% scored at or above their previous score; 24% scored 1 point higher, 22% scored exactly the same, 18% scored 2 points higher, 15% scored 3 or more points higher, 13% scored 1 point lower, 6% scored 2 points lover and 2% scored 3 or more points lower. The PLAN is a practice test for the ACT and is generally given to 10th grade students for a fee of $8 each fall; it was formerly called the P-ACT. Students who take the PLAN test in the State of Michigan score 1.8 points higher on the ACT Composite than non-PLAN test takers.

Career Planning COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS Almost all four-year colleges require scores from either the Scholastic Aptitude Test I (SAT I) or the American College Test (ACT). If your native language is not English you may be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Some colleges also require the Scholastic Aptitude Test II (SAT II) as part of the admissions process. Some require the SAT II only after you have been accepted. You need to consult the admissions information from the colleges you hope to apply to insure that you are following their admissions requirements. Students are encouraged to take the SAT I and/or the ACT at least twice. The recommended time frame is at least once in the spring of the junior year and again in the fall of the senior year. Students are encouraged to take the test/s more if they feel that there is still room for improvement in the scores.
ABOUT THE SAT I The SAT I is three hours long. It is made up of a verbal and a math section. The scores for each section range from 200 to 800. The highest possible combined score, the Verbal and Math sections together, is 1,600. However, the national average is 1,017.

Local Authorities Facilitate College Entrance Exams
In order to make sure the national college entrance exams go smoothly, local authorities around China are taking measures to guard against all kinds of disruption.
Exams may be difficult to take for students across the country. Many areas in southern China have been experiencing bad weather because of Typhoon Utor. In northern China, some regions will have a temperature as high as 38 degrees Celsius.
But local authorities have taken preventative measures. For example, in southeastern China's Fujian Province, substitute power supplies have been provided at testing centers in case of blackouts. In the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, noise disturbances due to planes, trains, construction workers are being kept to a minimum. Print Discuss It In This Section

National College Entrance Exams Start Today
The long-awaited three-day national college entrance examination started today, with some 3.88 million Chinese students taking part, 485,000 more than that of last year.
The exams in this most populous country are usually held every year, on July 7-9.
Chinese universities will enroll 2.04 million students this year, which means about 52.5 percent of the exam participants will have the chance to continue their study. According to the China's Central Meteorological Station, weather conditions in most parts of the country will be favorable during the exams. Examination venues are trying to do what they can to ensure that examinees are able to do their best in the exams. Meanwhile, parents are expending a great deal of energy trying to ease their children's stress. The exams also bring about some good business opportunities for the hotels, restaurants, tourist agencies, hospitals and even theaters.

Education Matters Financial Matters Insurance Matters Investment Matters COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS At the undergraduate level, most colleges require a freshman applicant to submit scores from either of these standardized tests: SAT I or ACT. Don't underestimate the importance of these test scores. They are used in qualifying for admission to colleges as well as for scholarships. Some students will tend to score higher on one test than another. Therefore, it may be worthwhile to prepare for both the SAT I and the ACT to see which test you are most comfortable with. We highly recommend that you take a good test prep course to prepare for these tests. The SAT II Subject Tests are often required at more competitive colleges. It is to your advantage to take the SAT II subject test as soon as possible after you complete the high school course in that particular subject. SAT II tests cannot be taken on the same day as the SAT I so you must schedule accordingly. Some colleges will accept the ACT in place of the SAT I and II.

Grade point average is important and one factor helping demonstrate ability, but more so it shows college admissions personnel student's effort and work ethic. Standardized test scores help to factor in ability, but historical methodology in assessesing validity of these tests only show they are 30% valid (although higher than 90% in reliability); certainly, standardized tests are imperfect and racially/ethnically discriminatory. Both GPA and ACT/SAT I test scores are still the two most used criteria for college admissions! Students and parents must continue to look at other factors which aren't discussed very often in college entrance: 1)Freshman Drop-Out Rate and 2)the simple fact that any student may obtain a "good" education at virtually any college or university. A.C.T.-American College Testing The American College Testing program began in 1959. Over 2 million students took the ACT in the 2001-2002 school year; it is accepted by over 85% of all colleges/universities across the United States. The four tests administered in English, Reading, Mathematics and Science give students a composite or average score between 1 and 36. Each test is weighted equally. Average scores are between 17 and 23; in fact nearly 70% of all scores each year fall into this range. All colleges/universities in Michigan accept the ACT as an entrance exam. The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor prefers that students achieve a composite score of 25 or above for acceptance in most programs, and it has the most rigorous admissions criteria in the State of Michigan.
