Choosing A Major?
Back to Academics Requirements for a BA Degree Back to Admissions Choosing a Major "It is not unusual for a student to be undecided about a major, or, for that matter, to change majors while in college. My own college career is a good example. I began as an art major and then explored majors in music, economics, and political science. I finally graduated with a major in history. Several years after graduation I decided I liked political science better and completed a Ph.D. in that field. I wonder, sometimes, if I might have been happier with a degree in music," says Dr. Sam Meredith, Professor of Political Science.
A liberal arts college is a place where students can learn about a wide variety of fields, explore a wide variety of careers, and find the best outlets for their talents and interests. While some majors, like education and the sciences, push for an early commitment so a student can get in all the required courses, for most majors it is possible to wait as late as the end of the sophomore year before making a final decision. The first year and part of the second is taken up with general requirements that all students must take, which gives one an introduction to what the various fields are like. This is enough time for most students to find their calling. However, a more important advantage of a liberal arts education, one that requires study of a wide range of disciplines, is that a graduate has the skills and breadth of knowledge to change careers later in life. We find that our best students have broad interests and prefer to take a wide range of classes

In a liberal arts environment, almost all majors can lead to good, stimulating employment after graduation. The choice of the major should be based upon interest in the subject matter and desire to learn and read extensively about it. Choosing a College Major: How to Chart Your Ideal Path
by Randall S. Hansen, Ph.D. The most important piece of advice in this article follows this sentence, so please make note of it and repeat it to yourself as often as you need as you read this article and make decisions regarding choosing a major in college. Are you ready for it? The advice: Don't panic I know it's easier said than done, but I can't tell you how many students I have advised since the time that I have been a professor that seem in a state of panic if they are uncertain of their major, let alone a career. Choosing a major, thinking about a career, getting an education -– these are the things college is all about. Yes, there are some students who arrive on campus and know exactly their major and career ambitions, but the majority of students do not, thus there is no need to rush into a decision about your major as soon as you step on campus. And guess what? A majority of students in all colleges and universities change their major at least once in their college careers; and many change their major several times over the course of their college career. This article is all about giving you some pointers and direction some steps for you to take in your journey toward discovering that ideal career path for you. But it is a journey, so make sure you spend some time thinking about it before making a decision. And don't be discouraged if you still don't have a major the first time you take this journey...your goal should be narrowing your focus from all possible majors to a few areas that you can then explore in greater depth.

A Student’s Guide to Job-Hunting on the Internet
How to use the Internet to choose a college major Many Internet sources can help you choose your major. Remember, your school’s career counselor can be the best resource in deciding on a major. Our article, Choosing a College Major: How to Chart Your Ideal Path takes you through the steps of a journey of self-discovery leading to a choice of major(s) and possible minors. The 10-Step Career Planning Guide , Canadian site, is particularly well-suited for high-school and lower-level college students. This career-exploration guide is especially comprehensive, covering exploration of values, interests, skills, learning style, and personality. It also guides users in researching careers in which they are interested and developing action steps for short- and long-term career planning. The later research-oriented steps are much better suited for Canadian users than Americans, but they are still helpful to all. The 10-Step guide is best completed in several sittings, but a very nice feature is the fact that the site will "remember" and store what you've already done, so you can simply pick up where you left off the next time you go back. In many ways, a major is like a contract between you, the student, and the school you attend. By declaring a major, you the student agree to perform certain work, (i.e. classes) in exchange for a college degree. In looser terms, a major is simply an organized collection of classes, either revolving around a subject (e.g. mathematics), theme (e.g. peace studies), or professional field (e.g. Pre-Med, Pre-Law, Engineering, etc.)

THE ULTIMATE DECISION During the past few weeks, many students have called our office to inquire about which major to select when completing the Supplemental Application. Some common questions have been: "Does choosing a specific major affect my chances of admission?"; "What if I am not certain of which major to choose?"; "What if I select a major, but change my mind later on?" These are all excellent questions that deserve further clarification. Aside from choosing the college, you need not make another decision if you are not ready. Some students have a strong interest in a particular major, but many are undecided. This is why the University exists. Boston College is a Liberal Arts university. The word "liberal" was derived from the word "free." College is about exploration, freedom of choice, and trying new things. You will have two full years before we expect you to have solidified your major choice. Furthermore, many of the students who come with a selected major will change their minds. Again, students have the option to change their major at any point during the first two years. Choosing a specific major at the application stage will not enhance or diminish your chances of admission. Therefore, as an applicant, you should apply to the academic division from which you currently would like to earn your degree. If through your college course exploration you decide you would like to earn a degree from a different division, we will work with you then. In the meantime, keep an open mind, explore your many options, and if you have no idea what you'd like to major in . . . there's always "undecided."
