Study: Social people less susceptible to colds
June 24, 1997
Web posted at: 8:49 p.m. EDT (0049 GMT) CHICAGO (CNN) Social butterflies engaged in the activities of the world around them may be doing more than just having a good time or helping others. They also may be keeping themselves from getting sick. A study reported Tuesday in The Journal of the American Medical Association found that highly social people are less likely to catch a cold than people who are less engaged. "People who have more diverse networks that is, were married, belonged to social groups, had friends and close family members were less likely to develop a cold than those who were relatively isolated," said Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University, the study's lead author. The findings of the study are something of a medical paradox, because coming into contact with a variety of people exposes someone to more germs. But one of the researchers, Dr. David Skoner of the University of Pittsburgh, speculated that being happy and involved keeps a person's immune system strong. Cohen also suggested that involved people take good care of themselves because they believe their lives have meaning.

Since medication can cause serious side effects in babies, most physicians prefer to make a baby comfortable with as few medicines as possible. Getting over a cold just takes time. Common Symptoms of a Cold:
  • Ear Infection Coughing Sore Throat Fever One baby is playing and is alert.

The humble cold is the most common infectious disease in the U.S. It accounts for more absences from school and work than any other illness. It is the leading cause of patient visits to physicians. It is not easy to catch a cold. Your body's natural defenses usually fight off these viruses. There is a direct relation between your risk of catching a cold and the amount of time spent in contact with an infected person. That is why families tend to get sick together. The most common route of infection is not from coughing or sneezing, or walking barefoot in the rain, but from hand-to-hand contact.

Enemas are tools for health that have very few negatives, are among the most ancient and safest of all medical treatments. Enemas can be great aides to health. A sense of well being, clearness, cleanness and euphoria follows an enema. Perhaps this is why enemas are used by sects of Christianity, Islam, Judiasm, Hinduism and other religious faiths for purification and atunement to God. Use this knowledge. C old and flu viruses probably account for more unnecessary trips to the doctor than anything else. The problem is, there's not much your doctor can do except provide you with sympathy, and tell you what you already know: "Rest, take a pain-reliever, and drink plenty of fluids." So, keep this self care brochure on hand for the next time you come down with a cold or the flu. It could save you the supreme hassle (and expense) of an unnecessary doctor visit.

    Home care
Take aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen to relieve headache, muscle ache, and fever. Rest (in bed if necessary). If you feel well enough to be up and about, OK. Just take it easy. You're most contagious the one to four days before you come down with symptoms not while you're ill. Drink plenty of liquids. Your body needs extra fluids when you have a fever. Also, extra fluids help keep the mucous more liquid, which can help prevent bacterial complications such as ear infections and bronchitis. Salty liquids (e.g. chicken soup, bouillon) can help with dizziness. If you have a headache or cough, or are congested, a vaporizer can help you feel better and breathe easier. A steamy shower works, too.

The common cold is difficult to cure because the virus changes size, shape, and resistance to treatment. It has hundreds of forms, making it almost impossible to develop a vaccine. A cold is always in the upper respiratory tract. If lung involvement, see the doctor. Lung or chest infections can be dangerous. Yellow or white spots appearing in the throat, enlarged lymph glands in the neck or under the jaw, and/or chills and shortness of breath occur, see the doctor without delay.

Colds: How to Know...What to do...When
by E.J. "Skip" Carstensen, M.D. Cold season lies at the tips of our noses. Rhinoviruses ("nose viruses") skulk on the tips of our fingers, awaiting their chance to make mucous membrane mischief. Rub your eye or touch your nose and they have your nose "off and running." Mystery, confusion, and uncertainty about colds and their treatment abound. But one fact is indisputable: the number of touted cold "remedies" matches the number of cold viruses. Unfortunately, none fit like lock & key to cure, prevent or even speed healing of the 'common' cold. A cold seems to last a week without treatment and seven days with treatment. "If we can send a man to the moon, why can't we cure the common cold?" is the oft-heard indictment of the health sciences. Pithy comment but faulty logic. The logic assumes, "To be common is to be simple." Colds, like people, are common, but far from simple, and widely different. Rhinoviruses, the primary "cold-causers," are typical of all viruses they are not capable of having a life of their own. To make us sick, they must invade, dwell in, and commandeer our cellular machinery. This viral-cellular intimacy makes antibiotics counterproductive. We and the unwelcome virus are so entwined, that if antibiotics killed the virus, they'd also kill our cells. Doubly shrewd, the large numbers and wide variability of these DNA villains make vaccines prohibitively costly.

My son is four months old . The baby sitter takes the kids outside. It's rather cold and windy here in Japan. Is it dangerous to my son's lungs or respiratory system to inhale cold air?
    Japan
For generations, parental wisdom has held that cold air is not good for children's respiratory systems. In particular, cold air has been thought to cause colds (thus the name). Earlier medical traditions have tended to agree with folk wisdom. Over the last fifteen years or so, the prevailing medical opinion has shifted to a different point of view. The more recent thinking is that cold air does not cause colds

    Antibiotics For Colds
Why don’t antibiotics work on colds?
Colds are caused by viruses, not bacteria . Over 200 different species of virus causing the common cold have been identified.
    Antibiotics
do not work at all in treating the common cold. A net designed to trap a human could let a tiny mouse escape. Antibiotics are medicines that kill bacteria, not viruses. Many antibiotics work by disrupting the bacteria's cell wall. Viruses don't even have a cell wall.
Antibiotics can actually make colds worse. By indiscriminately killing the
