Cold War project Our goal is to advance and facilitate the study of the history of the Cold War era by supporting original historical research; by fostering innovative inquiry; by creating opportunities for engagement among members of the national and international scholarly community studying the history of the Cold War. The Cold War began at the close of the WW II and ended with the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The Cold War was more than an arm race. It was the military, economic and ideological confrontation that brought us, more than once, to the brink of nuclear war. It touched many aspects of life. The United States and the Sovi et Union were major protagonists, but almost every nation in the world was affected in some way, as were all who lived through those years. This site is designed to facilitate continued study of the Cold War era. In our attempt to provide a full range of information we encourage educationally enhancing information from visitors. The wartime alliance between the United States and the Soviet Union began to unravel even before the end of World War II. When the war ended, the Red Army occupied much of Eastern Europe. The evident weakness of Western Europe raised the specter of communism spreading even further. Although the Marshall Plan helped restore Western Europe, other events of the late 1940s kept tension high: the Communist coup in Czechoslovakia and Soviet blockade of West Berlin in 1948, the fall of China and the Soviet A-bomb in 1949. Soviet support for the North Korean invasion of South Korea in 1950 confirmed the threat in Western eyes. The establishment in 1949 of the Western alliance, NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), and the 1955 Warsaw Pact between the Soviet Union and its satellites solidified the two opposing blocs that shaped the Cold War

Millions of Americans went about their lives as a wounded nation tried to put the memories of the war behind it. For the 40 souls aboard a C-141 Starlifter, that day signaled their return to freedom as they stepped out of the darkness of captivity and into the arms of a grateful nation. In the subsequent weeks more than 550 more prisoners of war would take the same journey through Hickam Air Force Base. Click Here for the full story Missions World War II Vietnam War ... Hyperlinks

    about the journal
European Security is devoted to the publication of articles, papers, essays, documents and reviews on the new architecture, concepts, institutions, problems and prospects for European security since the Cold War. Its objective is to explore the possibilities and dangers associated with creating an alternative security system for Europe. While the threat of general war which loomed over the continent for so long has gone, new dangers, especially ethno-national, social dislocations and economic collapse in Central and Eastern Europe have emerged. The 21st Century will be marked by new roles for old institutions and efforts to create new institutions and arrangements to deal with a more diverse, complex and dynamic security situation. European Security treats Europe as a culturally and institutionally defined community of nations from the Atlantic to the Ural Mountains. Post-Cold War European security is addressed in its broadest conceptual framework to include environmental, economic, social, cultural, ethnic and political dimensions.

I'm an anthropologist who is using the Freedom of Information Act , archival sources and interviews to write an historical account of the influences of the Cold War on American anthropology. This is a broad project and examines a variety of interactions between anthropologists and organizations such as the CIA FBI NSA OSS and other governmental agencies. I've helped organize and been involved in a number of sessions devoted to examining the impact of the Cold War and American Anthropology at the annual meetings of the American Anthropological Association. I've authored a number of papers discussing various ways that American anthropology has interacted with the National Security State. Summary
Will key political events of the 21st century blindside modern experts? Will the most serious threats to society be anticipated or even recognized by those who witnessed the Cold War, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union? To what degree is our experience with deterrence, arms races and alliance structures relevant to current destabilizing forces? This collection of essays deals with these timely questions. The essays were prepared for a December 1997 conference of that name sponsored by the Midwest Consortium for International Security Studies (MCISS), a program of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. They probe how international security studies must redefine its concerns in order to remain pertinent; for example, how might illicit traffic in nuclear materials or catastrophic damage to national infrastructure cause large-scale violence? Several papers extend this analysis to study how violence may be mitigated using, for example, an improved understanding of social identity and group loyalty or the creation of a transboundary legal order.
