"We are the only group in the country to combine live performers and Mariachi music," said Tapatio program coordinator, Patricia Klein Moreno, who is also an administrative assistant for child psychiatry at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. "This will be the first time the one-year-old group will meet the Decanos, who have been together 30 years with their director, Sergio Valle," Moreno added. It celebrates the courage of the Mexican people over heavy odds. The untrained, native forces , with inferior weaponry and smaller numbers won a victory against the powerful French army. Despite their victory in that battle, the French eventually won the war and ruled until 1867 until President Benito Juarez was restored to power. A misconception about Cinco de Mayo is that it is Mexican Independence Day. It is not. Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th. Even though Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday, it is actually observed on a much larger scale in the United States where it has become a way to emphasize and learn about Mexican culture and heritage. The celebration is designed to provide an opportunity for the community to experience the culture, sounds, and tastes of Mexico on this traditional Mexican holiday. Cinco De Mayo, translated literally as "the fifth of May", commemorates the defeat of the French army by Mexican soldiers at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. Often mistaken for Mexican Independence day, which is actually September 15, 1810, the holiday has come to symbolize freedom, unity, and Mexican patriotism. The holiday is widely celebrated in the southwestern and western United States in cities and towns where significant Mexican populations exist. The Ranchers Brunch at the Rockwell will feature such festive items as breakfast tacos (tortillas, eggs with red and green peppers confetti, cheese, and picante sauce), ranchers' hash, corn fritters, and chicken enchilada soup. Visitors coming to the museum for the brunch can enjoy eating their meal in the museum's Education Center on the second floor, where brunch will be served, or if weather permits, can take their sumptuous southwestern vittles to the Third Floor Terrace and enjoy a view of the rolling hills of Corning!
