The Program
The Interdisciplinary BA with an option in International Studies is a unique faculty-designed program with four distinct components: core curriculum, area concentration, language proficiency, and residency abroad. This program provides a flexible and balanced combination between classroom instruction and direct contact with the regions and cultures of interest. The program prepares students to enter the international labor force in the US or abroad, in the public or private sector, in for-profit or nonprofit organizations. This program also provides a basic foundation for further graduate work and scholarship in the international field.

A knowledge of history is both the mark of an educated person and a background for understanding the present. It develops skills that are valuable in all fields - the testing of hypotheses, the evaluation of evidence, and the formation and presentation of sound generalizations. The Mills history curriculum is designed to provide students with a broad background in history and a knowledge of historical methods. The faculty in history is composed of specialists in modern European history, 19th- and 20th-century U.S. history, and East Asian history. Mills graduates in history have continued their study in graduate and professional schools and have entered careers in law, business, journalism, publishing, teaching, library science, museum curatorship, and government service.

Handout #2
Growth of the American Railroad System
Linda Wright
To 1873 At the outbreak of the Civil War - approximately 31,000 miles of railroad in operation. - BOOM - new miles of track laid. Four major factors made this growth possible.
  • steel rails - replaced iron
  • safety devices - reduced accidents
  • standard gauge - by general agreement came into use in the late 1860's - paved the way for the development of a national network. Prior to the use of the standard gauge, variations in track width made it necessary to transfer goods from railroad line to railroad line.
  • integrated networks - consolidation of small lines - FINANCIAL PANIC - economic crisis - railroad construction decreased considerably. 1880's The Railroad Decade To the miles already laid, miles added.
  • Railroad transportation exceeded water transportation.
  • Industrial revolution accelerated in the west with the help of the railroads.
  • Great railroad companies beginning to take over other companion industries - diversification Pennsylvania railroads - large coal deposits Great Northern Railroad - ore fields Northern Pacific - ocean going vessels Gave rise to abuses - granting of special favors and rebates.

See the earlier handout for the format and content requirements for this paper. 2. You are only required to write the first paper. 3. If you do only one paper, it will be 30% of your final grade. Expectations will be high for these papers in terms of content and format. 4. The second paper is optional. If you write a second paper, the first paper will count as 10% of your final grade and the second paper as 20%. Thus, if your first paper earns a D and your second paper earns a B, the average would be around C+. If you hand in a second paper or ask me to review a draft of it, you are stuck with the grade.

This means that, to qualify, the language chosen must have a written literary tradition and must be a language of scholarship. The requirement may be met with European, Asian, or Near-Eastern languages. French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese are especially recommended, as are classical Greek and Latin. (Please note that ASL or music do not fill this requirement.)

Provisional University Bulletin Non-Western and Comparative Studies Objectives The non-Western and comparative studies requirement encourages students to explore through various disciplines cultures beyond the Western tradition. The common goal of courses in the program is to acquaint students with worldviews, indigenous intellectual traditions, and social institutions that have developed largely outside the traditions of European society and its North American transplants. By examining some particular culture, society, or region of the non-Western world (such as those of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Oceania) or by systematically comparing a range of values and institutions across cultural boundaries, students are expected to broaden their understanding of human achievements and potentialities beyond their own heritage. The program includes the comparative analysis of cultures and their interactions and draws attention to the intellectual problems inherent in the study of cultural systems other than one's own.
