Class Website www.unf.edu/classes/medieval/film/ The Course While Hollywood movies must skew the past to meet the demands of drama, spectacle, and interest, and documentaries are sometimes no better, film can also impel a fuller imaginative grasp of a period. Our goal in class then, is to bring critical intelligence to film as medium for understanding and presenting the past. Each week, the class will focus on a particular historical theme and examine how filmmakers have treated it. Class members will view both clips and complete movies while reading original source material and critical commentary. Assessment will be based on class and Blackboard participation, a short paper, a study journal, and a final exam. By the end of the course, students should be able: to assess the different approaches taken to the past by film makers; to establish filmographies on given topics; to defend their own point of view on given films; and most importantly

Historians at the University of Saskatchewan undertake independent research along many and diverse lines of inquiry. Every kind of historical method finds its place in this department, from classic diplomatic history, the history of ideas and of literature, to statistically?based history on the French Annales model. These examples are suggestive of the variety of approaches and topics. There has been little in the way of group research in this department and the individualistic, artisanal model prevails. The research of departmental members has a considerable impact on teaching as new interests also give rise to new courses. The history department remains convinced of the close connection between research and teaching. For more information visit our website at http://www.usask.ca/history

    SEARCH GUIDE-
Use these tips as you begin to search for materials:
Subject Headings: Finding material on your topic may be difficult, so you may want to try some subject searches to find groups of related titles. When searching the online catalog, use the following subjects for general information:
    • ChinaSocial Life and Customsto 221 B.C. ChinaSocial Life and Customs221 B.C.-960 A.D. ChinaSocial Life and Customs960-1644 ChinaSocial Life and Customs1644-1912
For more specific information, insert your narrower topic into the middle position of the subject heading (WARNING! The word you insert must be one recognized by the catalog when in doubt ask a librarian or check the LCSH subject heading Red Books , which are on the window sill behind Melvil
    • Example: ChinaIntellectual Lifeto 221 B.C.
You can also sometimes reverse the subject headings so that your topic is first and the countrey is second (again, your topic must be one recognized by the catalog):
    • Example: Rural IndustriesChina
Also, most importantly, when you find a book that looks interesting, look at the linked subject headings that appear in the record for that book and click on any that look interesting to find related books.

The Tao, or the Way is a fundamental metaphysical and intellectual concept shared by the three major intellectual traditions in China: Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Though interpreted differently by these traditions, the idea of the Tao penetrates the whole of traditional Chinese society. This course will explore the cultural history of China from the third to tenth centuries a.d. through close readings of important primary texts in English translation. These texts include works of philosophy, exegesis, scripture, essays, prose and poetry, and present key concepts of the major intellectual, cultural and religious movements of the period. In particular, the relationship between the Taoist and Buddhist religions and the whole of Chinese society will be investigated. In addition to the content of the texts, we will also consider the literary features of the works. By subjecting the literature to a careful
