Orang Utans
The Singapore Zoo displays a large social group of 26 orang utans in a spacious naturalistic enclosure. Though not the only zoo in the world to display a social group of orang utans, we are the only ones who have done so on such a large scale. The provision of a large enclosure and lots of climbing platforms allow the orang utans to get away from their group members and enjoy moments of peace when needed. The platforms not only allow the apes to develop their natural climbing skills but also serve as escape routes for them should fighting break out. These highly intelligent animals have to be kept occupied or boredom will consume them, which occurs ever so often in captivity. We keep the orang utans busy through the use of a technique known as behavioural enrichment The ability to breed is a good indication of the state of physical and emotional health of a zoo animal, and we are proud to have bred a total of 21 orang utans to date. We have sent some of our orang utans to zoos in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Japan, Australia and New Zealand as part of the worldwide exchange programme to facilitate breeding of this highly endangered ape.

Apes
A pes and humans differ from all of the other primates in that they lack external tails . They also are more intelligent and more dependent for survival on learned behavior patterns. This is especially true of the great apes and people. A ll of the apes and humans are members of the same superfamily, the Hominoidea . Within the Hominoidea, genetic comparisons indicate that there are probably three families of apes and one of humans. Hylobatidae (gibbons and siamangs) Pongidae (orangutans) Panidae
(gorillas, chimpanzees, and bonobos) Hominidae (humans) T he gorillas , chimpanzees , and bonobos are African apes, while the orangutans gibbons and siamangs live in Southeast Asia. Because of their relatively small body size, the gibbons and siamangs are called "lesser apes " All of the other apes are referred to as the "great apes " Natural range of the apes Brachiating siamang Siamang vocalizations T he smallest and the most arboreal apes are in the family Hylobatidae . Adult gibbons are only about 3 feet tall standing upright and 13 pounds in weight.

Overview Ring-tailed lemurs
T he Order Primates includes humans, apes, monkeys, prosimians, and related animals. Many of them may be familiar, but it would not be surprising if you cannot immediately visualize prosimians (like the ring-tailed lemurs in the picture on the right). They are an ancient, relatively primitive group of primates which also includes such animals as lorises. A ll of the 190 or more species of primates are classified into one taxonomic order because they are mammals with close evolutionary roots. The exact number of living primate species may not be known. Every few years new ones are found. The tropical forests of South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia may still be hiding unidentified species and varieties. According to Conservation International, a Washington-based non-profit organization, 10% of the primate species are now acutely endangered and will likely become extinct during the next 20 years. Most of the other primate species are also at great risk. The primary cause is deforestation, driven ultimately by human population growth.

Red Colobus Extinct According to a report in the October issue of the journal of Conservation Biology, the bushmeat trade is responsible for the fist primate extinction in 100 years. Researchers, led by John Oates of Hunter College in the USA, spent the last six years looking for evidence of the once abundant Miss Waldron's red colobus monkey in Ghana and the Ivory coast. Whilst there was no sign at all of the monkey they did find spent shotgun shells, traps and snares. This extinction may be the first of many as Becky Harris of Born Free's Primate Campaign reports below. BUSHMEAT COULD POSE A THREAT TO UGANDA'S CHIMPANZEES
The bushmeat issue is the biggest threat facing the survival of chimpanzees and gorillas in Africa today and it is estimated by some scientists that chimpanzees may only have between 5-10 years before they become extinct in the wild. With the continuing war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, many people have fled to Uganda for safety. However, last week Born Free received the worrying news that two Congolese refugees had been arrested in Uganda with chimpanzee bushmeat. Although chimpanzees are eaten in some African countries, this is the first case of chimps being killed for bushmeat in Uganda. Conservationists are concerned that if this escalates it could pose a threat to survival of the remaining 3000 wild chimpanzees which live in the forests of Uganda.

CHIMPANZEES IN THE
BIOMEDICAL INDUSTRY
Typical chimpanzee life
in a biomedical lab Most chimpanzees in North America are housed in biomedical laboratories. If a baby is born in a biomedical facility he/she will more than likely go to the nursery. Life in the nursery is very much like that in a human nursery - bottle-feeding, clothing, attention are all provided to the infants. When a chimpanzee becomes older and stronger, and less easy to control, they are placed in a cage in the adult facility where they will spend the rest of their lives. An adult chimpanzee can stand up to 4 feet tall and weigh around 180 lbs. An adult chimpanzee is also 8 times stronger than an adult human male and can pull 1,000 lbs. with one arm. Each chimpanzee cage measures 5x5x7 feet, is usually made up of steel, and is lifted off the floor because it is easier to hose the cages this way. The size of the cage is about the size of a typical elevator. Some biomedical facilities do let the chimpanzees be housed together and go outside from time to time, but most do not. Chimpanzees are very social individuals, yet most biomedical facilities refuse to house chimpanzees together because it is more trouble and may result in more fighting. Results exist from studies which have allowed chimpanzees to be housed together properly that do not support these beliefs.

Chimpanzees and the Law
It's still legal
to buy our closest living relatives as pets," declared Jane Goodall, the renowned primatologist. "You can buy them on the Internet." She spoke at a symposium on "The Evolving Legal Status of Chimpanzees" cosponsored by Harvard Law School's Student Animal Legal Defense Fund and the nonprofit Chimpanzee Collaboratory; the September conference explored legal protections (and lack of same) for the great apes, a subcategory of primates that includes chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans—and, according to some proponents, humans. In fact, human and chimpanzee DNA are 98.7 percent identical, a biological fact that has supported the use of these primates in laboratory research. Goodall, however, claimed that such studies have not produced major scientific advances. "I want a new mindset," she said. "We need to recognize that animal medical research hasn't helped that much." (For a broad discussion of this issue, see "Animal Research," January-February 1999, page 48.) Goodall's landmark study of chimpanzees in Tanzania helped redefine the boundaries between animals and humans, the very boundaries that were the symposium's focal point. The event attracted primatologists like Richard Wrangham, Moore professor of biological anthropology, who directs the Kibale Chimpanzee Project in Uganda, as well as legal figures such as Stephen Wise, who taught the first animal-rights law class at Harvard, in 2000, and Frankfurter professor of law Alan Dershowitz. Most speakers took as given that chimpanzees can communicate and emote, and that their rights should be expanded.

The Foraging Behavior Enrichment of Primates in Taipei Zoo

Abstract
This paper describes the foraging environmental enrichment programs designed to stimulate natural behavior of gorillas, chimpanzees and fat-tailed lemurs in Taipei Zoo. These experiments have resulted in the extension of their feeding time and increase their social interaction.
Introduction
Environment enrichment is an important and adopted zoo management tool for the captive primates in modern zoos. In order to promote animal conservation education, we invited Dr Hunthius, the conservation and science director of the American Zoo Association, with his group of animal behavior researchers to conduct a workshop ‘The application of behavior study in animal management’ in 1992. A series of programs were initiated to enrich the animal behavior. With the operation of some key elements within the captive environment, including foraging and management design, the natural behavior of the animals was stimulated to reduce the occurrence of abnormal behavior. This report is the study results of primates.
